My SWAG on this is S&W has a tooling problem on one of their machines. Maybe a particular flute or bit is beginning to show its end of life cycle.

Badtheba hopefully that fixes your problem. It took me a few field strips and cleaning to finally get a few magazines through without a malfunction.

I have a Kahr CW45 and Springfield XD that worked right out of the box. I have never had an issue with them. I was going back and forth between the XDS and Shield but went with the Shield because it just felt so balanced. Don't regret my decision since I had to send it in but just need S&W to issue a clean bill of health and for me to get through quite a few magazines without a malfunction.

Patton I am with you in that it has to be a manufacturing issue of some sort. I have the Performance Center so not sure how manufacturing would differ with the ported barrel if that turns out to be the problem. I was looking on my box for a date and see 082016 which could be August 2016. Could have been a manufacturing flaw during this time frame but just trying to think of a theory.

Mclem that is very interesting, mine is also dated 082016 as well, and from other posts that does represent the date and year of manufacture.

Oh wow the same date, that is interesting. Something had to be off during manufacturing. Will also be interesting to see if S&W comes back with the same problem for both of our guns. Hopefully we get them back soon. Just stocked up on ammo during black Friday so itching to take it back to the range. Will update once I get the diagnosis back.

From what I've seen in earlier threads, It represents the Month/Day/Year, which would be August 20th 2016... Which is even MORE coincidental.

Hello all. Great info in this thread. I just wanted to add that i purchased my shield 9mm PC around father's day and have the same issues. It does not matter how many rounds are left in the mag, even bought another mag to see if that was the issue. I've ran 400 rounds of different ammo with the same issue. The manufacture date on mine is 052316.

Just got my gun back from S&W. The paperwork said they replaced the barrel so will take it to the range this weekend to see if that was the fix.

Before the first range trip clean and lube it well. I have 1500 flawless rounds down range with all different brands and grains of ammo. The gun works and shoots better than I do.

I recently put 150 more rounds through mine without issue. I don't know what has changed, but it went from jamming every 5 rounds or so to working fine. Not sure if i should send it in our not.

Put another 350 through it without cleaning. If you have no more trouble, call it good.

I received my pistol back from S&W today. Paperwork indicated they replaced the barrel on mine as well. Hopefully I can go the range this weekend to try it out. If not, I may have to wait until the following weekend.

Patton that is awesome. Hopefully the new barrel fixes your issue as well. I plan on hitting the range this weekend to put more ammo through it.

Dackjammit glad yours is working properly and sounds like you got the kinks worked out.

Mclem, appearently the new barrel was the fix. I fired off a box of Perfecta 115gr FMJ, and a box of Win T&D 147gr FMJ, without a single issue. I might even say the grouping appeared to be just a little tighter also. One thing for certain is the trigger is completely broken in now and has really nice smooth, crisp release. I see no need what-so-ever to upgrade the trigger. Really liking this pistol. I have to commend S&W for the professional, no hassle repair.

And if you do have an issue, S&W will fix it for free and their turn around is quick.
Don't think Sigs, Taurus, Ruger, Kimber, do-da, do-da don't have their issues, as well. Again, a MINUTE number compared to the number sold. When you get this worked out you will love it.

I purchased the Shield PC 9mm two weeks ago. I took it to the range this past Monday and it happened to me too. Jammed backed on the second magazine of the day, with several rounds remaining. I was shooting PMC Bronze 115 FMJ. It happened again about 40 rounds in. I shot a total of 100 rounds and it only happened those two times. I'm calling S&W Monday to get this resolved. Hopefully, a new barrel will be the answer. Thanks guys for the info.

My new Shield 9 has 051116 for the date on the box. Took it out yesterday for the first time and ran 150 rounds thru it without a single malfunction. Three brands of ammo were Federal FMJ, Winchester White Box FMJ, and Speer Gold Dot GDHP, all 115 gr.

It's a pretty good little shooter.

My new S&W shield performance center did this. I can remove the mag and pull back on the slide and slide will lock back without slide stop engaged. I think it is a rsa issue not a barrel issue. As when I took my gun apart to clean factory oil off it before shooting recoil spring was try to over ride the guide rod end. S&W has some terrible quality control on their rsa assemblies. Not sure who makes them for s&w but they aren't the best machined guide rods or springs.

Got mine yesterday and the same problem as you guys. Happened after three shots and it locked all the way back past the slide lock. Had the range guy take a look and he found a piece of plastic inside the striker area. Turns out it came from the lower right back of the gun/slide area. However, this didn't fix the lock-back problem, as it happened three more times in the next 50 rounds. Guess I'll be contacting S&W on Tuesday for an RMA as well.

I called them before xmas and they put me on the list mailing list when they get them back into stock. They had no idea when that would be in stock. I really don't know why they don't make their own. Never had a manufacture tell me they were sold out when I've asked to order a rsa. Guess that's their one negative.

Happened to mine 8-10 times during the first 100 rounds. Took it back to the LGS where I bought it (it was only 2 days old) and it looks like they RMAd the RSA. Picked it up a couple days ago, put over 250 rounds through it and had another half-dozen or more occurrences. I'll try another couple hundred rounds today... and then I'll call S&W.

Why? You've already put over 350 rounds through it and had lots of failures. What will more rounds tell you that the previous rounds didn't?

Just call S&W and get it fixed. Further shooting will only cost you more money and frustration.

Rastoff - I had heard somewhere that ~500 rounds were appropriate for break-in. Since I didn't get to the range last night, it's on the way back to Smith today.

Default Same here

I have the same gun as the OP. And it locks open on the 3rd or 4th magazine I push on the top of the barrel with my finger and it will release. Also sometimes when it slide locks with empty mag. When I take the spent mag oout, and insert a full mag. It will rack a round without my releasing the slide lock. I put a little over 200 rounds through it so far. The place I bought it from told me to bring it back to them and they would take care of it for me.

Sounds like clearance issues somewhere. A call to S&W is free. They may pay shipping both ways. And probably fix for free. You may only be without it for 2-3 weeks. Mine was 13 days from time I shipped until it arrived at my door........

I have an older shield so I tried a little experiment. I put the performance center upper on my old lower and it still dose the same thing. on either lower I can pull the slide back by hand slowly, and toward the end of the slide you can feel a gritty resistance like metal scraping metal. My old shield feels smooth all the way no resistance. So I put the performance center barrel in my old shield. and the old barrel in the performance center upper. and the old barrel has no gritty resistance in the new upper. but the performance center barrel in the old upper has the gritty resistance feel like metal scraping metal no matter which upper i put it in. So thats making me belive it is the barrel. EDIT- Also my new performance center barrel has a rough and scratched surface were your arrow is pointing. and my old barrel with 2000+ rounds through it has no marks or burrs at all on that part.

Default Hate to say it, It happened to me.

Brand new Performance Center Shield 9mm.
Locked up tight fully to the rear on the third round. Could not get it to budge at the range. When I got home I banged on the barrel, it was concrete tight, and the slide went forward. Will try to shoot it again tomorrow.

I picked up a new pc 9mm yesterday. Fired around 150 rounds and had this same issue over 10 times. Cleaned and oiled the gun before I went to the range and even tried cleaning it again at the range. No luck. Tried 3 brands of 115g and a brand of 124g. Did not matter the ammo or the mag it happened with all combinations. Called S&W today and of course the problem was new to them. I told him to google it and you'll see others having this issue also..... emailed me a shipping label and sent it out to them today. Very disappointing that I purchase a new gun and less than 24hrs later I'm sending it in for repairs. Positive point was support was nice and wanted to help.

Took my brand new shield to the range for 1st time today. Ran about 150 rounds through it and had this same issue about 20 times. On the way back to the truck, another guy was asking the range owner for some help getting his new shield's slide unstuck. The date code on my box is 031617.

Seems the consensus is barrel tolerances and someone mentioned the RSA. Those who've called in for an RMA, were all solutions new barrels or re-worked barrels? Any instances were the RSA was replaced?

EDIT: picked up a PC9, barrel looked bone dry, RSA felt crunchy, like my first Shield was when new (and now isn't). Clean, lubed and it mitigated the slide locking back some, but not yet 100%.

At my Shield's first trip to the range, my girlfriend had this issue with it. Hands me the gun, sure enough, slide is completely immobile and locked back all the way. Eventually I did just give the slide a hard smack to get it to return forward. I took it to the range again the next week and all was well! Before my first range visit I admit I didn't thoroughly clean the pistol. It came 100% dry from the store so I simply oiled it. Of course I did clean it thoroughly before that 2nd range trip, so perhaps that made all the difference. I'll update my post if I have the problem again.
