Default M&p 45 failure to feed

I recently traded my glock for a real gun. The full size M&P 45. I got it used from a liscenced store thats run by mostly police officers. I was told the gun was confiscated from a law enforcement student from the college and had maybe a magazine through it so I felt comfortable buying it. Also the police officer did a field strip on it and said it looked good, I didn't feel like I needed to question his judgement. I cleaned it up when I got home and it was a little dirty. Took it out to the range the next day and out of the 20 Winchester target rounds I shot 7 of the times it jammed. All were failure to feed. One of the magazines was new and the other was one that came with the gun. The rest of the bullets were fired from a glock 21 flawlessly. My question is, is this a common issue with what kind of fix? Or did I get lied to? I'm feel like I'm in the dark here.

Did you lube the gun? Were the FTF's one mag or both? If the feed ramp shiny or Melonited? Need more information.

Mine has never had FTF, but when cleaning and reloading spare mags I found that one of my mags would stick after unloading 3 rounds. The follower was hanging up on a tiny shaving inside the mag wall. I chipped it out with a small screw driver and it was fine after that.

One other time with another single stack gun that was my EDC I found a little chunk of lint blocking the follower of my 2nd mag. I used to clean my stuff every month or so now the interval is a couple weeks.

I hear these same problems constantly on this site, that is why I am hesitant to by a m&p, for now I will stick with my j frame until s&w gets their quality control in order...

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info. The feed ramp is as clean as I could get it. And it had issues with both new and used mags. Ive got an appointment to take it to a gun smith. One of the best gunsmithing places in north carolina so hopefully I'll be able to get a quick diagnostics

I've never had a failure of any kind with my 45fs over close to 8k rounds down the pipe now. Generally I would think that it might be a mag issue but since it's happening with both new and old, I guess it could be something else. I did polish the feed ramp on mine when I got it. It didn't cause any problems before the polish, it just wasn't as smooth as I wanted it. Hopefully the smith can find/fix whatever problem there is because I absolutely love mine. 100% stock still with all stock internals.

I love how everyone bashes smiths quality control when one prob comes up. I'm sure some stuff does get by but I wouldn't let one persons problems reflect the entire line. Especially when the problem hasn't been resolved or pinpointed. It could be something as little as a limp wrist

not to disagree with you experts, he said this didn't happen with his Glock so we can assume that this is not a limp wrist situation, almost every day there is a post about about feed issues and most responses are that the owners had to do some polishing to correct the problem, for me that is a company with little regard to quality control that a simple final polish wouldn't correct.

What color are the springs in the magazines? The new type are supposed to be light blue which also has a different follower.

I had 7 mags with black springs and called S&W up to get the newest generation light blue springs. He confirmed the newest springs were not only light blue, but they also had a new follower design. He then took my info and said he would be sending me 7 new springs and 7 new followers for free! He also told me to make sure to use the new springs with the new followers only, no mismatching. Now I didn't have any problems with the mags when firing, but I did have the follower stick on a few when unloading the mags by hand which is why I called them up for the newest replacements in the first place.

There are several other posts in this forum with M&P 45 FTFs. I bought a brand new midsize M&P45 last year and it also FTF'd right out of the box. It was current production at that time, I believe 7/2013 manufacture.

On my gun I noticed a slight burr on the back of the extractor that I suspected was causing the FTFs. Smith and Wesson sent me a shipping label and they turned the gun around and got it back to me in less than 2 weeks. They installed a new extractor and test fired the gun.

It has run flawlessly ever since and feeds everything I run through it. It's my nightstand gun.

I'd suggest to call Smith and Wesson and send it in. Seems like there was a batch of M&P 45s that FTF'd right out of the box. They will make it right on their dime.

Default M&P .45 Failure to Feed

I've been having a consistent problem with my Shield .45 failing to feed. The pistol has less than a 300 rounds through it and it happens regardless of ammo type or manufacturer. I have the same problem with hollow points and ball ammo from Winchester, Federal, and a few others. When I rack the slide, the first round goes in fine but every other round will not feed no matter how many rounds are left in the mag. I'm not having any other issues. I suspected that this was a problem in the magazine so I bought two more. There is some play in the clip so I suspect nosediving but this has happened with all four of my S&W magazines.

To the OP: You said you used "Winchester target rounds", do you mean 185 grain semi-wadcutter loads? If so, they may not have enough oomph to cycle the slide with the standard recoil spring.

Yesterday, I tried to fire Hornady 220 gr hollow-points and Federal 230 gr FMJ with the same F2F problems.

I bought a used/like new FS M&P 45 a few years ago, the test fire date was 2007. I have had no issues at all, even with reloads with 200 gr. LSWC or 230 gr. LRN, or any of the factory 230 gr. ball ammo. I've added several new and used 10 & 14 round mags with no issues. I hope you get things sorted out, the 45's are an excellent pistol and I enjoy mine as much as my Ruger SR1911-Which also shoots all the same loads with no issues. :-)

Hate to suggest something obvious but if the pistol only had a magazine or two through it before you bought it maybe it just needs some range time. I own a Ruger that I bought my dad new and inherited when he died. Thing jammed like crazy and I understood why dad stuck with his revolver. After a couple hundred rounds through it I noticed it was no longer jamming.

I've had several M&Ps and never had one that didn't eat anything I put through it. Guess I'm just lucky.

My problem is apparently in the weapon body. I bought another magazine with the same failure to feed results. More research online tells me that this might just be nose-diving from the clips which I don't believe is the problem since it happens on all of them. The other problem is that the feed ramp needs to be polished. I've cleaned it after every use so my only remaining recourse is to send it back to S&W for warranty service.

Holy thread revival... Back from 2014!

I own three M&P .45's and have never had a single issue that I can recall. I have 1.0 4", 4.5" and a Shield .45. Everyone of them eats any and all 230gr ammo I have ever used. I only shoot 230gr fmj or hp. For the money I think are some of the best striker fired .45 pistols you can get.

Sorry you're having problems.

I gave my Glock away due to constant jamming problems. Sad thing was it was my first bottom feeder and I was never interested in owning one out of fear it would jam.

I have a full size M&P 45 and a Shield 45 and both of them have performed flawlessly.

I'd try and find a reputable gunsmith and let him take a look at it.

Do you own a 45 M&P? Have you ever owned one? I have and do for the last 10 years and never had one problem with mine and don't know anyone personally that ever has. I have run my reloads and factory of all type ammo and have never had one problem with any part of the gun. I don't own stock in S&W and am not in love with any semi auto modern pistol but I don't believe there has been any widespread problems with the very popular M&P line. It has been in production over a number of years and a big seller and still has a good reputation.
