Default MGW Shield Sight Pusher

I bought a MGW sight pusher from Midway this week and got it today. I bought a set of Ameriglo I-Dot Orange/Green night sights to install on my Shield 9mm.

There are a couple of YouTube videos showing how to use the MGW sight pusher. In those videos you have to use a nylon block around the slide to keep from breaking the rails. The sight pusher that I got has been redesigned and no longer uses the nylon block. They have designed it so that there are two steel arms that fit very close to the slide. When you use it for a shield you need to remove the metal shim below where you slide the gun slide onto the rails of the fixture.

When you take off a front or rear sight they push off to the ejection port side of the slide. When you install them they push on from the ejection port side of the slide.

I saw where you need to heat up the allen screw in the original sight as they used red locking compound to secure it. I bought a little butane pencil torch from Home Depot and it did the job just fine. I only heated it for 15 seconds, just enough to break the seal of the red thread lock.

The rear sight is very tight. When I started to push it out I went a quarter turn, back it off, then did another 1/4 turn. I did this until it broke loose then did a turn to 1 1/2 turns at a time. Be sure to capture the spring and cap as you push the sight off the slide.

The Ameriglo sight was too tight to get very much started in the dovetail. So I took a fine file and put the sight on the file. Then did about 10 or 15 strokes and took off very little of the metal. It basically polished the bottom of the sight as much as it removed a small amount of metal. I checked the measurement with a dial caliper and left the new sight about .008 wider than the original sight. It went in tight but not quite as tight as the original sight. It came with a set screw so I used it and put a little blue locktite on the screw and tightened it down. This all took about 15 minutes as I was being extra careful so as not to break the slide rails.

When you attach the slide to the rails on the sight pusher be sure to push the slide up against the steel block on the side of the slide next to the ejection port side of the slide. This will insure that you don't put undo pressure on the slide rails.

The front sight came off much easier than the rear sight. Here again be sure to remove the shim from under the rails on the sight pusher. The shim is for the 40 S&W Shield.

One side of the pusher block is wider than the frame of the sight pusher. You have to reverse the slide in the pusher when you install the front sight. The pusher block has to be wider to accommodate the front of the slide. The slide didn't go as close to the fixture side as I wanted it to, so I used the shim between the slide and the tool. I them pushed the slide up tight against the pusher frame and shim. I tightened down the screw for the frame rail and pushed the sight on the slide.

This all took me about 1/2 hour as I was going slow and careful. I don't always do this and have paid for my mistakes in the past!!!!!

For me the sight pusher was well worth the price. I'm not sure that the I-Dot sights are what I'll end up with but I wanted to try them out. So I may be installing other sights down the road. Banging away with a punch and heavy hammer with tritium sights doesn't appeal to me. The sight pusher did the job very well. The YouTube videos will give you the gist of how to use the tool. Only now you don't have to mess with a plastic block. A definite improvement in my opinion!!
