Default Shield slide serrations

Has anyone noticed that the slide on the Shield is a lot harder to hold on to compared to the full size M&P's? I have a Shield9 and love it except the serrations on the slide are too smooth. Any way to have a gunsmith modify them or cut them so they are sharper like the full size M&P's so the slide would be easier to grip?

Smaller gun and smaller slide, less area to hold. If your having an issue with racking the Shield, try the reverse rack:

Get a firm grip on the slide and then push the grip forward fully. This is opposite of holding the grip and pulling the slide back. It is easier to push the larger grip, than pull the slide. My wife can only pull the Shield slide back about halfway, but by holding the slide tight and pushing the grip forward, she can get it fully racked, but just barely.

I don't have a FS M&P other then my .22 but I've never had a problem working the slide on my Shield. Neither have any of my family members, including my wife and 13yo daughter. I think it has a positive grip, personally.

Yes. The Shield has a lot less "tooth". I would like it be a bit sharper, but the serations on my FS and compact feel too sharp.

they are less pronounced. I am guessing since it is a carry gun so that it will minimize snagging, etc.

I agree that they are a little too smooth though.

I have the same problem with my smaller pistols. Suggest getting a grip exerciser. It will help. 25 years ago those slides were no problem.

I dunno....

My belly is telling me the edges on the Shield slide are plenty sharp enough as it is ... If ya carry IWB low the slide can rub ya raw after a day out and about. This is one reason I changed my preferred holster to a hybrid that had a pad under the slide. Mo bedda, for me at least.

If the slide was smooth, then folks would complain about THAT ....

jus sayin ....

There have been times when I considered taking out the rear sight and welding a charging handle back in. I just cannot hang onto the slide enough to rack it comfortably. I have an old bicycle glove that I put on, and it helps a bit, but there are days when I really can't do it. And I have two different hand exercisers. I will likely put it on the market because of the difficulty.

Is that the NDZ extension? How do you like it? Any advantage to using the "short" one over the long one?

I never really thought about it until this thread came up so got my Shield out to see how I rack it. I us this "push, pull" method to rack the Shield. In fact, I use this method to rack all my pistols. On the full size I grab the slide in front of the ejection port to rack it. This is a stronger placement of the hands because the hands don't cross. The down side is there are no serrations on the front of the slide and you have to be mindful not to let your pinky get in front of the muzzle.
