I have a pair of fingerless padded palm gloves that I bought for riding my motorcycle, I wear one on the right hand when I'm going to shoot more than a few rounds, it's a big help, they sell them at Harbor Freight.

I got one for myself when they came out (9mm) . I was able to keep it for almost 3 days until we (wife and I) went to the range and she claimed it for her CCW pistol.
She was carrying an M&P Compact and shot better with the shield and carries it more due to it being slimmer and lighter.
I have a Green Crimson Trace laser on hers as well.
I had to buy me one to replace the one she took from me. Both have safeties and both have been shot with zero issues.
Makes for a very easy carry pistol. Its thin and light and I forget a lot of time that I have it on.
I will tell you I have take off the plastic filler part on the 8 round magazines. It will get in the way at the worst time. (slides up and down the mag and can make a magazine change a real challenge). (check Military Arms Arms Channel on Youtube, good video on the M&P Shield)

If you get the Talon grips they include a piece for the extended mag and it ties the two pieces together, plus they sell extras if you have more than one extended mag.

Energizer Bunny right out of the box, wouldn't have kept it otherwise. Only issue was with bad ammo. In my waistband as I type. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

I'm extremely pleased with mine. It exceeds my expectations. I did expect it to be reliable, and so far it's been perfect. But I didn't expect it to be such a soft, forgiving piece - given it's size and weight. Not sure how they do it but I like it.
Yes the slide/springs are stiff. Virtually all smaller handguns shooting 9/40/45 have to be. Physics is such a drag.
Now, before I purchased mine I wish I had known that a non-safety version was coming. I would have preferred that. I also would have purchased the .40 and a 9mm barrel so that I had more flexibility had I known that the barrels were interchangeable. Today I only shoot 9mm's but having the option would be nice.

M&P Shield
Yes I really like this weapon. I have full size version too. For what ever reason the Shield is more accurate then full size. Nice gun!

Took my Shield to the range last week and was shooting steel at 11, 25 & 50 yards. I was using 124 grain plated round nose reloads with 3.7 grains of Solo 1000. It shot quite well out of my SR9c and Shield.
I noticed I was patterning tight at 11 yards with the Shield so I started shooting at the 6"x8" 25 yards without missing. I contemplated the 50 yards shot and finally took a chance. Before this, I never took such a long shot with a pistol without a scope. I actually hit the target center but about 2.5 " low. I was blown away. I am not that great of a shot! Needless to say, I didn't try again and was very satisfied with such accuracy.

Put the first few rounds through the Shield 9 today. The gun performed flawlessly with American Freedom 124gn FMJ. Accuracy is adequate. Didn't notice any issues with locking fully loaded magazines. Didn't notice any issues with operating the slide. I had thought that I might get some irritation from the bottom of the trigger guard, but I didn't feel that, at all. So far, I'm very happy with the gun.

M&P 40 Shield
It packs quite a punch when fired.
Looking at getting the M&P 9mm. Have fired several hundred rounds in the 40 with no failures.

M&P 9mm Shield
I have a Springfield XDS and XDM, also a M&P CORE 9L, I fired a Shield the other day and liked it better than the before mentioned. Was able to hold tight groups right out of the box. A very nice gun. Size is perfect for a carry gun, almost as good as a Bodyguard

Is it normal to get casing shavings under the slide? I have put 150 rounds through mine and every time I clean it I notice shavings. First brass now aluminum (bought 2 boxes of federal aluminum) is this normal?

I just sold both my Shields - a 9 and a 40. They were adequate shooters, but seemed lacking somehow. I replaced them with an M&P 45 mid-size and an H&K VP 9.

I've had a 40 Shield over a year. It arrived at the dealer MA compliant and had a 11 pound trigger pull and I could not keep a tight group (low and right). I put an Apex trigger kit in and the trigger pull fell to 5.75 lbs. All the grit in the trigger disappeared. I now have consistent 2 in. groups out to 25 yards. It has now become my concealed carry of choice. My Sig and Glock just don't hold as well. I also put an Apex trigger kit in every pistol I have if they make one for it.

Just bought a 9mm this month, exceptional tight groups except they were all low right, drifted the front sight, and it is dialed in now. Maybe some of it was me since I have not shot for sometime. I thought the slide was a little stiff, but it seemed to loosen some after firing it. I fired numerous types of ammo, not one single problem with any feed or jam. Great weapon at a great price of 315.00 out the door.

I have the .40 and hated it until I changed the trigger and the sights. It has quickly become my favorite gun for ccw.

Love the Shield. Have the .40 version. Springs are really tight, but I'm assuming they will loosen up.
Had an auto feed failure during the trip to the range, but the gun was pretty dry out of the box, surprisingly.
It happened one other time that same trip, but has not happened since, 150 rounds later.
IMO, perfect EDC. Went from Glock to S&W and not looking back.

My favorite EDC
It's very easy to carry and reliable too. I've used many different types of ammo without problems. My favorite to carry with many choices in holsters and accessories.

What not to like?
I like this gun more and more. Very capable and reliable. Great trigger. 6,000 rounds in two years. Attached is target from my last trip to a range with Shield 9mm - 4 mags/30 rounds from 7 yards. Not my best score, but nothing to be shy of...
Oh, forgot to mention, I lost white dot from the front sight as well, but since then I replaced original sights with aftermarket once.

My dad has one of the first ones, he bought it the week that they came out in April of 2012. It's the only handgun he has so it is his everyday carry and range gun. He has well over 6,000 rounds through it with the only issue he has had being the white dot falling out of the front sight as well.

I have not shot mine since the first week of owning mine. Which was A few weeks ago. I took my former boss with me we took turns between the shield and his old S&W 357. The following weekend he went to a gun show and traded in his Kal for the shield. He lives in the country and has a back yard range. He said the springs do loosen up a little after a couple of thousand rounds.

Bought my Shield .40 back in Jan. and couldn't be happier. Only have about 600 rounds through it, but it has been flawless with assorted 165 & 180 gr., FMJ & JHPs. It goes with me every time I leave the house.

OP, has your wife shot the Shield yet? I love, love, love mine. I carry on body (AIWB) and can carry it all day without a problem. Took me several months (I've only been shooting for a few years, new gun owner summer 2013) to get used to the trigger, but I'm pretty good at self-defense distances (4-7 yards), which is what it's for. I'm actually more accurate with it than with my M&P 9FS.
I think I've got about 1600 rounds, maybe more through mine. Fits my hand very well. I know a lot of women who carry them. Recoil isn't very bad. Highly recommended. Have your wife rent one first before buying.

I had both a Shield and a M&P Pro in 9mm. They worked fine, but neither one fit me well enough to keep. Sold them and went back to all steel 1911's. I guess polymer pistols are just not for me.

I have the newer NTS version of the shield in 9MM Ran 500 rounds thru the gun with no change from stock, other than talon grips. Two ftf with WW white box ammo. Light primer hits. They occurred in the first 150 rounds. None it the following 350 rounds.
The trigger was gritty and heavy, with no real improvement even after 500 rounds. I installed the Apex duty/carry kit. FANTASTIC Improvement in every way. Ran 100 flawless, accurate rounds thru the gun Wednesday. I have Ameriglo I dot pro sights heading my way, as my 60 year old eyes need some help. Stock sights arent the best for me.
I've already removed the front and rear sights. The front was a bigger pain to get out than the rear. I think that will about do it for my modifications. I will carry this gun often, im certain of it. Home run S&W!!

Like others have stated, the Shield takes a little more elbow grease to rack the slide. If you think dropping the slide by using the Slide Stop lever will be an alternative to putting a round in the chamber, then plan on adding even more elbow grease because that's stiff too. Then when it comes to loading the magazine by hand, plan on having a hard time and sore fingers... Those 3 things are my only gripe about the Shield, and it's kind of nudging me towards looking for a new CCW.
PLEASE have your wife attempt to operate the firearm before purchasing it.

Loading and racking can be troublesome but with this , all is good!
That's a Handi-Racker on the left and a UpLULA on the right.

I don't know why anyone would load mags by hand when UpLulas exist! I recently introduced several people in their 60s, who have arthritis, to UpLulas. They saw me loading mags while shooting and were very interested. They borrowed mine, and were amazed they could load mags without hurting their thumbs. They bought one at the range before leaving. I have carpal tunnel, so I've used an UpLula since day one of getting my first pistol in 2013.

Had my Shield 40 two years now. XS Big dot sight, Pearce mag extensions on the larger mags, and its my everyday carry. After two years and probably 3000-3500 rounds, still stiff. Not an issue for me, but my wife still struggles to rack it. With a Foxx IWB holster, it just disappears. I shoot the FS 40 with pretty good accuracy. The Pearce extensions allowed me to control the Shield just about as well. It will never become my wife's gun until she gets a stronger grip or it loosens up.

Picked up a Shield in 9mm for the wife. Have about 600rds through it to date. Have mainly put WWB through it and have at least 1 stovepipe per 100rds. Initially thought the wife was limp-wristing, but starting experiencing stovepipes myself when I fired it. Not giving up hope just yet, I really like the little pistol.
Any ideas about the stovepipes? Weak WWB ammo? Strong recoil spring, or both?

I don't like the fact that I have to spend $30-$35 dollars on and have to use an external tool for something as simple as loading a magazine. I could understand things getting a bit stiff while trying to get the last round or two in, but, at least for me, it feels that way for damn near every round...

I have 6 magazines for my shield. One 8 round and 5 7 round mags.
All were extremely difficult to load at first. After leaving them loaded for several days and shooting 800 rounds thru the gun, they ALL load alot easier. Patience grasshopper

Uplula's are great to have anyway even when the mags are easy to load after a few 100 rounds with any mag your finger tips can get a little tired of it .
Best money I've spent and the only thing that bothers me is I waited so long to get one .

I have 5 Shield mags. 2 came with the gun, and I purchased 3 used from a forum user on this forum. The member I purchased the 3 mags from stated that all 3 had about 100-200 rounds on them. The 2 that came with the Shield stays loaded. Matter of fact, they've been loaded for months now. Even with all of that, they are STILL a pain in my arse and hand to load.
I shouldn't have to use a $35 tool and spend approx $200 in ammo to be able to hand load my mags without killing my fingers.

I just bought my 9mm Shield about a week and a half ago, and after 150 rounds so far so good.
I started out shooting consistently to the left but with time brought it closer to center.
I think this is just a practice issue.

Yes, I like my Shield a lot. I've never had any problems with it whatsoever. It is my cc most of the time. On the occasion when I have to go out quick and get a gallon of milk or something, I use my BG380.

Just about every new mag I've bought (Glock, XD, Beretta, Kel-Tec, and more) have been tight. I'm not sure which brand's mags (when new) AREN'T tight. I bought an UpLula about 6 years ago, just to make loading mags quicker and haven't regretted it
All my mags stay loaded to the max, but Simply loading them and leaving them loaded for Months won't completely break in the springs. You do need to exercise them, but it doesn't absolutely mean by shooting... It's just more fun that way.
I broke mine in using an eraser head pencil... repeatedly pushing the follower all the way down with the eraser end of the pencil, like churning butter, while watching TV.
While that made loading rounds 1 though 6 easier, after more than 2.5Yrs of shooting my Shield Bi-Weekly, it's STILL tough to load that 7th round by hand.

I own Kel-tecs, xd's, Sigs, and a few rifles that use magazines, and I do not recall any of them being so stiff from beginning to end. Hopefully as you all have eluded to, one day they'll break in.

LOL... If I keep loading the Shield mags by hand, I might not have to wait until I'm 80. I've been resisting, but I might invest in a mag loading after all.

Absolutely love mine - I realized I needed a dedicated every-day-carry gun specific for CCW ... I searched and researched for 1 month, kept on coming back to the Shield, and bought it.
Resounding success, it has been perfect and awesome from day one. the oNLY problem I have had was the included recoil spring (aka guide rod) was a lemon and I had to get a (free) new one from S&W ... but better now. And I have read many people having the same problems... I believe the guide rod is the Achilles heel but it's a minor thing and easy fix.
I love this gun!

Well on a positive note at least we know that our springs will stay strong for years to come and for those that refuse to get a loader will have the strongest trigger finger in town 😛

Hell yeah I am happy with my Shield 9. It is very easy to conceal and is fun to shoot. What's not to like?
