9mm shield discovery
I am posting this just to let you know of a possible rust situation. Now I know this is my fault and I am not blaming the gun, but the other day I went to drop the magazine out but the release button was like frozen. It would not budge. But finally after several attempts with a lot of pressure it released. On the back side or the right side of the release button when you pushed it out, it looked like rust on it. I believe the button is plastic, but maybe there is some metal inside. Anyway I put some clp in there and worked it for awhile and then it smoothed out. I had carried it off and on for most of the summer and fall. Was unable to get out to shoot. So I know this falls into the my fault department and am only mentioning to oil it up once in awhile. I know it ain't right to treat a gun like that because you just might want it to work sometime.

I field strip & check / clean (if needed) all handguns once a month even if they have not been fired.
Would seem that a frequent check would avoid at least some problems.

I carried concealed at work and now retired the same, and any time I am away from home. I never leave home without it. Every Saturday without fail... all weapons are cleaned and lubed and wiped down to protect them and me. When you really need it and have to pull the trigger, no boom can be a real problem!!

I check and clean my carry gun every two weeks. I should do it every week.
What you've experienced is not new to the forum here. The magazine catch is not completely plastic. It is plastic over a metal insert:
It is that little tab that is rusting. I believe that it is the one part that isn't getting the Melonite treatment. Call S&W and maybe they'll send you a new one.

I field strip all of my weapons the same. Especially my carry piece. But on the average once a month. Even my long guns.

The magazine release is metal.
My Shield had the same problem with me over the summer:

Thanks Jayhawkkie and Hillbilly for the links and information. This helped me two ways. One was now knowing that others have had the same situation. The second is a wake up call to let the gun breathe at the end of the day and to give it some oil more often and to just give the thing a good cleaning more frequently. Thanks again for your help

I just pulled mine out and it is black not shiny, looks like it's treated with the same coating as on the slide, my pistol was manufactured this Sept, did they make a change.

I hope they did. Adding the Melonite treatment to the mag catch can only be a good thing.
For the record, mine isn't really "shiny" either. It is very smooth and I'm sure the light caught it just right for that pic. I have done many thousands of mag swaps though and I'm sure that helped smooth it out some. Still, it's not shiny. Neither does it have the same black color as the slide. If yours does, that's a good thing.

I'd say they made some changes. Mine is completely different than the previous photo. I don't know if it's melonited, but it does look like the same black as the slide.

Yes, well, they are different. The mag catch I pictured above is from a regular M&P and the one pictured by tcook90 is from a Shield.
The regular M&P mag catch is reversible and the Shield is not.

Just broke my new Shield 9mm out of jail yesterday. Plan to strip & clean it this evening and will be lubing the metal of the mag release with a product called CorrosionX.
I've been using it on all my saltwater fishing reels and it really works to prevent them from getting chewed up in that nasty environment. The stuff is said to penetrate into the microscopic pores in a metal's surface and stay put - given the excellent job it's doing on my reels, I'd say this claim is true.
The manufacturer sells a type of Corrosion-X especially for Guns but I'm going to use the regular stuff I have as it works so well on my reels.

Been carrying my shield in a humid climate for over a year. After seeing this post and watching a couple of videos, I popped out the magazine release on mine and no issues. Might be because I always wear an undershirt and it rarely rides against bare, sweaty skin.

Every time I clean my Shield, I pull out the mag catch...clean and lube it. I also disassemble my magazines and clean them inside and out as well.
