I have two (no thumb safety) shield 9 and have a set of the XS
Big Dot sights ready to have installed. (SW-0024S-3) I called them before purchasing and questioned when they were going to add Tritium to the rear sight. I was told never since there "wasn't enough room" on the rear sight. So, since they weren't planning to have Tritium on the rear sight__no point in waiting__so ordered them.
I also purchased a set of Ameriglo sights for the second Shield__
__SW-245___ I'm waiting for some free time to have them installed.
Like you it was a matter of which__so I did both. If you have the one gun__hmmm?
Good luck and enjoy your pistol.

Here's a rundown on the latest Tru Glo's
New Truglo TFX gen 2 TFO sights
XS Big Dots many have said give fast close range acquisition but due to their size long range accuracy is compromised.
There's also Trijicon HD's but they are more expensive.

I do not run either of the sight sets on my own guns but I have had opportunities to fire guns with both sets you mentioned. I really like to try stuff if possible before I buy stuff.

The Truglo sights are simply great. The only reason why my carry gun does not wear these sight is because my idpa gun does not and wanted the same sights on it only with night sight instead of fiber optics. I still wonder if that is a mistake when these threads come around. The tfos are that amazing.

I do not have anything good to say about big dot sights but there are those who like them. I cannot seem to get the "wedge" rear sight to work for me to be accurate enough. The claim is that the big dot makes up for this by being fast to pick up due to its size. I feel as though I pick us a fiber optic during the day and I night sight at night as fast or faster (fiber optic during the day).

Sights often come down to personal preference so ask around and see what those you know have, with any luck you should be able to try guns with these sights on them since they are both popular.

I recently got big dots installed on my Shield 9. Having never shot a "dot the i" sight picture before, the learning curve for me was pretty steep. I would have thought it would have been pretty simple, but it honestly took me about 100 rounds to become even remotely "acceptable" shooting with them. The target acquisition could be really quick with that big ol front sight, but due to the fact that I was attempting to learn how to shoot with them from a basic level, I never really tested fast follow up shots and multiple targets.

On a side not, my shield is out of commission at the moment, and I place a bit of blame on both my gunsmith and XS. After that 100 rounds, and a day of carry, I noticed the front sight drifted all the way to the right of the slide. I popped it off and low and behold there was no adhesive used to hold the sight in place on the slide (The sight package includes red Loctite). After I call to my gunsmith and some digging around the internet, I learned that... a) my gunsmith deemed it unnecessary to use adhesive on a dovetail sight, and b) the dimensions and quality control on the specs of the front sight are sub par. I understand including the Loctite in the package, and I also know it should have been used (I was quite upset to find that it wasn't)... but on the other hand, there was no filing done to the bottom of the big dot front sight, and still it slid right off the slide.

Some things to consider. Understand that there may or may not be a learning curve for you with the big dots, and that it can be frustrating. And if you go with this sight system, Loctite the **** out of that front sight and keep an eye on it to ensure it hasn't moved with time.

I too have looked at the XS sights but when I see them on other guns I'm not sure I would like them. However, I do have two Glock 19s with TruGlo TFOs mounted and I love them. I've only had them on for about a year so I don't know about long term longevity, but so far they are great in daylight (some night sights are poor in daylight) as well as at night.

One of these Glocks with TFOs is my nightstand gun, along with a 600 lumens small flashlight.

I was in a similiar situation a couple of months ago trying to decide between XS Big Dots or other sights for my XDs 9. I ultimately decided on the XS Big dots. After putting about 300 rounds through them, I have grown to like the sight picture. I will tell you that the first 100 rounds I was questioning my decision. I now prefer them over the 3 dot sights. However, I can certainly understand people not liking these sights. They do take some time to get used to.

BigSarg:

Welcome to the Forum. While not a Shield, I added a set of the TruGlo TFO sites to my S&W M&P 40C a few years ago. To me, the night sights are not quite as bright as dedicated night sights that do not have the fiber optic rod added to them. I find the payoff is a superior sight picture under almost any conceivable circumstance. I think the slightly dimmer night sights are an acceptable trade-off. The TruGlo TFOs are, in my opinion, very reasonably priced. Installation cost me $20.00 - you will want a professional to do this (good installation requires a sight pusher) at a local gun store. My M&P has a green colored front sight, and yellowish rear sights, but I believe other color combinations are available.

Good luck,

Dave

PS: photos added - sorry about the poor quality pictures, but my darn hands shake.

I have two M&P 45c. On one I installed XS Big dot and on the new one I installed TrueGlow TFO green/green. I really like the TFO sights and can see them in all conditions. Thinking about getting another set to change the other one over so both EDC match. I also have a Viridian C5L on the one with the XS.

I used to shoot TruGlo's until I shot a friend's gun with the XS big dot sights, I use the smaller of the two dots. Now have the XS sights on 5 Glocks and even had a set installed on my .22 conversion kit. IMHO, once you get used to the sight picture there are no other sights as fast for a combat/defensive pistol.

I have Xs big dots on my Shield 9, 9C, and my Glock 19. They are great sights for defensive pistols. Really easy to draw and get on target. I am not a big fan on 3 dot sights on a fighting pistol. I have heard good things about the Truglo sights. Find someone who has both and see which you like better.
