Well I bought my wife a BG380 for Christmas and finally took it to the range last week for the first break in firing. It had been cleaned and lubed, though the magazines were new and not oiled. The only Ammo it shot perfectly was the Underwood 90gr +P Extreme Penetrator. Had 50 rounds of Remington 90gr ball and Oi. Failure to extract from the barrel 4 times( had to use a knife to extract the rounds). Failure to feeds, eject, stove pipes, light strikes. Took it apart, cleaned it tried Federal 99gr HST and it cycled 3 in a row then the magazines (both) would fall out after one to two shots. Even had one of the range instructors try it and it had the same magazine issues. Had their gunsmith replace the magazine catch mechanism but have not fired it since. My wife is furious. She wanted the Sig p238 but I went with SW reputation as well as trying to save a few hundred bucks. I plan to take it out Friday with some Winchester 90gr ball and more HST. If it has the same issues, I'll call SW and see what happens.

What revision is your Bodyguard? A good indication is the stamping on the magazines. 1, 2, and 3 are the revision numbers I am aware of. If it's anything but "3", get in touch with S&W and they will update the firearm for you at no cost (minus shipping).

I have had a hell of a time with a Glock 42 and "weak" ammo not cycling the firearm. 85gr are an absolute no-go. 90 and 95gr work but not consistently. 100gr ammunition is the only type that has cycled it 100% every time.

Far as I know it is the latest revision. The M&P 380 Bodyguard. Has the serrations on the end of the slide with 2.75" barrel. Has the M&P engraved on the slide, etc. S/N starts with KDJ and am thinking it was made early 2016??? (04-04-16 actually) As for stamping on the magazines?

I just bought a BG380 not fired, so now I read all these problems, You'd think a co like S&W would want this fixed, if Galloway can fix it S&W a major Firearm Co. could fix or care for their customers better. If I have problems I WILL send it BACK, and DEMAND IT FIXED, this is BS, maybe a class action would get their attention.

No-one should have to buy a gun from a major Arms company thinking it might work. I just bought the BG and now I'm reading all these problems and people buying a hundred dollar trigger to make it as nice as a LCP, RIDICULOUS. If S&W cant build this gun to work every time they ship one then quit making the thing. This is far as I'm concerned is pure BS and unactable. If I was the CEO heads would be rolling they'd fix it or be looking for work. If mine is a problem Ill make them fix it if I never carry it, it's the principle of the thing. GET IT FIXED OR QUIT MAKING IT.

Hate this, going to the range with a chip on my shoulder before the first shot, I'll throw it fifty yards if it does not work.

I guess you'll be getting her that Sig. Peace will be worth a few hundred bucks.

I've heard bad press about the .380 before and I'm still hearing bad press. I'm not confident about getting one of those. Give me a couple of years to see if this 'new generation' pans out.

Even an experienced attorney would at least test the gun but you haven't even fired it. Why don't you test it out before going ballistic next time?

If you'd done a bit of research, you'd have known you were buying a problem.

Due diligence is a good thing.

I did research. I read the bad and the good and the bad had been with the older model BG 380. There was more good about the newer version than bad so that's why I went with it vs the Sig or Ruger. It's in SW hands to repair and if I get it back and it still doesn't work right, I'll send it back again until they fix it. If not I'll sell it and go for a Kahr or Glock or anything else.

If your experience turns out to be like mine I'd suggest you start shopping for a Kahr. The S&W is a nice design that incorporates the features I want (thin, lightweight, good sights, thumb safety), but any gun that can't be counted upon to fire is useless to me.

You recomend the B G And the LCP bolth have had a lot of issuses. Do you tell your customers that the Original Lcp is a direct copy of the Kel Tec???

I bought a BG. Dry fired it a few times, hated the trigger. Sold it unfired. I bought a Ruger Custom LCP. I like the trigger pull, shoots well, I carry it around the farm.

Default .380 Bodyguard

My BG has over 400 rounds of Hornady American Gunner 90 gr. XTP though it without any problems. 100 % reliable. However, it was ammo finicky at first ( but so was my KahrP380, Kel-TecP3AT,and Ruger LCP ), getting a few light strikes on Fiocchi, Tula, and Magtech. But since I've stuck with Winchester and Hornady no problems at all. This BG is by far my favorite .380 that I've owned

Sell the 380 for 250 dollars and buy a shield. Use the extra cash for ammo 😂. Just ridiculous! Too concerned about new releases to address ongoing issues like the bodyguard!

My primary is a 45 Shield. I want a pocket weapon preferably a 380 as a secondary carry. SW has it and they are about 6 weeks out (they've had it 2 weeks, so hopefully in 4 more weeks) I will know if I keep it or sell it. SCCY's new CPX-3 380 has been getting pretty rave reviews. May check that out. Time will tell.

This is the first I've heard of the SCCY CPX-3 - so I hit the Google and it looks like it's vaporware. Did they actually release it? I had my BG .380 for about a year before I gave up on it - but it sounds like the more recent production examples are doing better ...

How many rounds have you put through this gun?
If less than 300 keep shooting it before sending it back.

Do you have more than one magazine?
If so is it failing to feed or stove piping with both? If just one magazine is problematic will the second one feed without problem.

Have you cleaned the magazine then lightly greased the spring?
You should also check for burs on the follower or the inside of the magazine body, pay careful attention to any areas that has a cut out or recess area also look for rub spots on the interior of the magazine body.

Try a different type of ammo, I would first try a round nose FMJ round and see how that goes, then if that works try some hollow point styles, I have seen a few styles of HP's with a plastic insert in the cavity to facilitate feeding.

Hope this helps,

I completely mixed up my firearms, I was thinking of another gun. Disregard my previous comment on magazine stamping # please. Glad o hear you are happy with your Bodyguard! I really enjoy mine, its proven to be a very good ankle gun for me.

I have three magazines. All three had the same issues. It's not even extracting the empty casing from the barrel every time either. As for the CPX-3 no release yet which is too bad.

It may be a blessing the Sccy has a latter release because the 1&2 are still having problems.I would never buy a new release

I've had a SCCY CPX2 for a couple of years. Without going into great detail, let's just say I won't be buying another one.

My thoughts and take on the smaller pocket pistols:

All smaller pistols run with smaller/tighter tolerances and room for error and failure. That is the nature of the beast. ALL manufacturers suffer these issues. The smaller they are, the more chance for failures. They are inexpensive unless you are buying a rorbaugh.

If you get one that works, keep it and love it. If you get one that has issues you will lose confidence in it no matter if the manufacturer repairs it or not. Send it back to the factory, get it repaired, then sell it or trade it in and move on..... find one that has your complete confidence for carry.

I bought a BG 380 when they first came out. I put over 400 rounds through it before I sold it 3 years ago. The only problem I had was with the laser, which S&W promptly replaced. I read about all the problems others had since 2011. I can't believe this cool little weapon still has all theses prblems.

At the store yesterday I seriously considered ANOTHER Bodyguard 380 purchase as a backup to the one I currently own and carry. Specifically the non-safety model.

The issue came down to price. At $349.99 it was cheap but not cheapest. And, if I'm honest, there's NO WAY I'd buy it and carry it without modification again (specifically; trigger). A minimum additional cost of ~$100. So, ~$450 for another Bodyguard akin to the one I own and love now? Sorry, no.

Picked up a new Ruger LCP II for $289.99 instead. Trigger seems perfect, feels amazing in hand. Definitely new competition for my BG380 when you consider price. Sure, it's a little ***** but assuming it's reliable I can overlook it's blocky exterior.

I have two BG380's.

I've been following the internet sales, and it seems the Ruger .380 is on sale more often than the BG380.

You can get either one for about $200 if you shop the sales.

My unmodified BG380 guns fire Hornady Critical Defense ammo 100% flawlessly.
One of them does not like (10% light strike - but fires on second strike) German-brand GECO cheapo ball ammo. It likes all the other cheapo ball ammo fine.

Mind you, when I fire the BG380, I pull the trigger like I mean it.
No "staging" the trigger to take some sort of carefully aimed shot.
Never will I ever fire that gun for its intended purpose in such a situation which would allow that kind of trigger manipulation.
I can only foresee firing it under condititions where I'm drawing it as fast as I can, and pulling the trigger as hard as I can, before some muscled thug physically overpowers me.
So, I practice firing it ONLY in that manner.

So far, so good.

Nice primer strikes on yours W.E.G.. I see that the PPU casings are lightest, and I've had the same results with that ammo as well. Mine still light strikes other ammo too, like WWB and reloads with CCI small pistol primers.

I didn't see this thread when posting about a similar problem with my BG 380. It seems as though there are quite a few of these in circulation that suck. I just want to know does anybody make a good firing pin for this gun. I guess Galloway stopped, anyone else?

On one of the many BG 380 "negative issues" posts on this board, one guy had 3 BG and after 4 send backs to SW his first BG was finally fixed and shoots fine. So I'll be patient and give SW time as I really like the BG 380 and want it to work. I want a pocket pistol as a secondary back up so it's either a 380 caliber or a pocket 9 which I have read have their own issues.

I've owned the following tiny .380 pistols: Glock, Ruger & Smith. All seem to have problems of one sort or another leading me to believe there is a dimishing return when size & weight are significantly reduced. I currently have an LCP purchased just before the release of the LCPII and it runs fine until I get to around 70 + rounds (gun is dirty), then it begins to stovepipe. Knowing it works through 2 mags I carry it only when I cannot conceal my M&P 340, like when wearing dress slacks or a suit & tie. My EDC will continue to be a J frame b/c they always work.

I carry my BG380 every day and I would stake my life on it.
S&W makes thousands of BG380's each year. Like anything else that's mass produced you're gonna find a few lemons... jeez, if you're not happy with the pistol send it back & they will fix it, that is what a warranty is for. Use it. But it's not going to magically fix itself by lowballing S&W on the foums.
Looks like you, failed to read original post, he sent it to S/W and it still is malfunctioning.

Always a laugh to get someone who states "Mine works great and therefore represents the thousands out there therefore yours should work. " Or the famous "Don't come on a S/W forum bashing S/W products" even though the product is not functioning as intended.

Please do explain how his direct experience with a pistol is somehow negated by your lack of evidence with a statement like " There is no mass problem"

I like to hear about problems from other owners. It keeps me informed and aware of what to look for should I notice a problem. As for mass problems, I think that CaptRon is correct. There is NO mass problem. Just a few finicky guns, and a few lemons out there.my .02

I own both of the models, the laser model is about four years old. It has been good for me and I fully realize that does not help those of you that have had a bad gun from S&W. When I took the two of them to the range I found the new gun, after about 30 rounds, did not lock the slide back and it would have a failure to feed on the last round on any or all of the four mags. To make a long story shorter I took the gun into my shop, I completely realize the the gun is brand new, I found the tab that engages the flat on the mag on the last round was short and not riding up the lever. It would either not come up enough or it would hold the mag follower up and not feed the last round. In my case, I weighed my options, tore the gun down, not recommended to those without proper tools and experience, put the slide lock back lever in my vice, used a punch to lay it out about 2mm or so and now, as the second photo shows it engages the flat correctly. I know, I know, I should not have to do this to a new gun, etc. Problem is, I really like the platform and the company so I was willing to do what I believe was necessary to correct the problem. No I do not feel that we, everyone, should have to correct the problems with any new purchases from any manufacture but this is what worked for me and I can live with it. As a final note, I have been through the S&W Armour course for M&P handguns but this little gun was a education and a challenge. Small parts and springs, big old arthritic hands. Just my .02 but if you are having a problem with the slide not locking back it might be that you have a similar problem to this and can direct the repair person as to where to look to correct it. Hope this is of some help to someone.
Frank.

Default Did I just get lucky?

I had been searching for a good, dependable .380 for a while when it I finally asked my regular gun dealer his thoughts. He pulled a Bodyguard 380 out of his pocket and directed me to his range. I fired 3 full magazines through it. I liked the long trigger pull due to the fact that I can't understand having a gun that I need to cycle a round into the chamber to use the thing. I mean, it's a defensive weapon and should be ready to use on a moment's notice. The long pull meant to me that I wasn't going to have an accidental discharge and shoot myself. I liked the fact that it had all of the features of full sized gun in a small package. I particularly liked the laser as I can imagine that any time I would need to use the gun would be low light situations and thinking that a laser which can be deployed in less than a second might just deter a person from further attempts at violence. After all, they have no idea what size of gun they're facing, they just know that someone has a gun pointed at their center mass. I very much liked the feel of the gun and the fact that I can conceal if very easily. That's a real problem for me since I'm fairly tall but slim. I'm 6'2" and go about 165 pounds, so my full sized 9mm's are way too bulky to be concealed very well.
Out of the box the gun was accurate and the laser was right on at about 8 meters. I have run somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 rounds, plus or minus, through the gun and the only trouble I have ever had was with an aftermarket 10 round magazine my wife nabbed for me. That magazine was intended only for use on my home range anyway, but I would warn all of you BG 380 folks off any such thoughts. I have to recycle the gun every time to put another round into the chamber. Aside from that the gun has been perfect.
I'm not such a fanboy of any particular brand of gun, though I do have a liking for Ruger products that goes back to the 1980's when I was working as a private investigator/bodyguard in the Detroit Metro area. At the time I carried a Colt Combat Commander and occasionally a Colt Gold Cup. I carried 1 extra mag with my Colts. Having gotten used to the Colts in the military I was very familiar with them. That all changed when I ran across a shootout in a Detroit neighborhood and these guys were using MAC-10's. It had nothing to do with me I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I suddenly felt like I was carrying way too few rounds. I went to a dealer and picked up a Ruger P-85 and it felt a lot like my Colts. It was accurate and after fitting it with Pachmayr grips and 3 extra magazines, I felt I could at least hold my own in that very (at the time) dangerous town. Hence my liking of Ruger, that led me to buy my first 10/22.
Regardless of all of that, I have gotten to love my BG 380. At least in my case the gun has been flawless and has
become my favorite pistol to shoot. I have been able to "walk" shots on target up to 50 meters away and I'm no Jerry Miculek.
With as much as I love my BG 380 I do read about folks not having as much success with the gun as I have had with it. I have no doubt that every manufacturer has problems with certain firearms. It is very concerning to me that people have had Smith & Wesson work on their guns and still continue to have problems. It just doesn't make sense that a manufacturer like S&W can't fix a gun that they designed and made, no sense at all. I mean what the heck?
I hope that somehow S&W can get these things worked out, I mean it sure doesn't make a lot of sense to carry a gun you can't count on when you NEED it. So good luck to all of you out there that have problems with these guns. I trust mine and that's all I can say really.
Each and every gun is different, I get that, but it's really strange that 1 gun comes off the line perfectly and the next is a box of junk. How the heck does that happen?
Best of luck to you all and safe shooting to everyone out there.

I've been busy but here is the "post" SW fix. They said said they polished the feed ramp and put in new magazine retention pin in, etc. I put on a Talon grip and then took it to the range. I shot 250 rounds mostly +P ammo but also some CCI ball ammo. I had one misfeed and that was my fault. I dropped the round and it created just enough of a ding in the brass for it to jam. I also had one magazine eject, but again my fault, my thumb hit the release button. So after changing my grip I had zero issues. It is acccurate and I now can say I am happy. I know it likes +P ammo and CCI ball ammo. It is currently loaded with Buffalo Bore +P 95gr JHP.

Default BG 380 firing issues

I bought a BG380 last year for the wife. Took it out last weekend to shoot it for the first time (been busy). When I went to shoot it, i could squeeze the trigger all the way back and nothing was happening. I watched the hammer and it appeared that the hammer was not going completely to the point of releasing and sending the firing pin forward. I tried dry-firing and.. same thing. The gun was taken apart when first bought and oiled and inspected. i am not an armorer so, inspected to the best of my ability. Anyone else experience the same thing or similar?
