Default Red Dot on an older M&P 9, 4 1/4"?

I've been wondering if a Red Dot sight would help me by not having to worry about seeing the rear sights clearly aligned with the front. My bi-focals aren't sufficient anymore. Has anyone mounted one and if so, how is the best way to do it? Obviously this vintage doesn't have any mounting holes in the slide.
Also, any suggestions on a good Red Dot that wouldn't break the bank?
Thanks.

There's plenty that will mount into the rear-sight dove-tail, but you really get what you pay for in a red-dot.

Burris fast fire 3. Mounting plate that replaces rear sight. Sits a bit high compared to a core or milled slide but the mounting plate is only about $35. Works great over all. Turns new shooters to good shooters. And good shooters into great shooters. People that I normally shoot with get jealous and say that I'm cheating but of course you still need the fundamentals

Red dots work great for far sighted folks. I am near sighted and the dot/cross is blurry unless I wear my glasses or full power contacts and focus on a distant object.

I really like Red Dots because my 66 year old vision can't see iron sights very well any more. I have also tried lasers on the M&P and like them as well. Unless you practice great trigger control no sighting system can make you a good shot. The laser or Red dot will help you see what you are aiming at if iron sights are too difficult.

It's easy, just put the glowing blurry thing on top of the blurry thing that you want to shoot and pull the trigger. Works every time.
