M&P Shield Firing Problem
Hi Everyone,
I recently bought a Shield 9mm. When I took it to the range this weekend I noticed a consistent problem with it however. Every time I would fire a mag through it, remove the spent mag and insert the new mag, then release the slide forward the first round would never fire. I had to pull the trigger twice for the gun to fire.
The mag was fully inserted, and the slide was in the correct position so I am not sure what is going on. Near as I can tell I don't have the magazine safety feature on the gun.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this happen or knows the best way to fix it, because it seems like a poor design flaw to have in a carry weapon!
Thanks!

I am not sure what you are describing. After inserting the fresh magazine did you pull the slide back and then release it or just depress the slide lock lever.

The gun does not have second strike capabilities, so I'm not sure what is meant by pull the trigger twice before it will fire.

... AND... If you pulled back and released, are you sure you didn't 'Ride the Slide' home?
Many (if not most) of these reports, were due to the shooter riding the slide, which kept the slide from going completely into battery.

I just solved what I think was a similar problem. For me, it was the trigger bar loop not getting out of the way of the sear to get back under it. This was after getting the Apex FSS trigger kit and having to adjust the loop (open it). I had to close it back a few mils and bend it ever so slightly to make it run parallel to the sear. The problem was what felt like a "dead trigger" especially on the last round in a magazine. I tended to press sideways on the trigger. By pushing on the other side of the trigger, I would hear/feel the sear reset.
If you have a new M&P that you haven't played around with, you should definitely call S&W and have them look at it. They should send you a shipping label number so you can have it shipped both ways prepaid by them.
Manufacturing tolerances sometimes stack up and once in a while an out-of-adjustment gun slips by. A single shell test firing might not catch the problem, S&W should be able to make it right. Describe the problem fully especially about the first round in a full magazine. They might be able to duplicate the problem even with snap caps.
Good luck

Been there. The problem is that the slide is a very small bit out of battery. The first pull actually moves the slide forward, but doesn't link properly. Once the slide goes into battery, the second pull fires it.
I have never used the slide stop as a release, slingshot only here, so that was not a factor
Call S&W, describe the problem. They will fix it.
You're starting a step ahead of me. Mine was so far OOB that it had the be given a whack to get to the "two pulls" step. It is my first striker fired, so it was only later that I realized I was risking limb.
I'd wager you'll get a new extractor and barrel.
Mine is now 100% for over 500 rounds.

Try it with one less round in the mag and see if it still happens. New Shields and new Magazines can be very stiff. Like mentioned previously sounds like your slide is slightly out of battery, make sure you slingshot the slide when you are loading.

Thanks for the advice everyone!!
I went back to the range last night and made sure that I wasn't Riding the Slide. Unfortunately I still had the problem
I'll give S&W a call this evening and hopefully they can get everything squared away.
Thanks for all the help!

I had the same problem when I first got my 9. Sent it in to S&W. They kept it a couple of weeks. Sent it back saying no problems were found. How ever it didn't have the problem anymore.

First off thanks for all the feedback this forum has been so helpful.
I was having exact same issue OP was having with his trigger so sent mine in for service 3 weeks ago.
Just receaved back from service today with trigger bar replacement.
I'm going to put range time in this week will report results of repair.
Phil

OK good to go 200 rounds fired no malfunction trigger bar was remedy my Shield has never preformed better.
There was some other tweaking done f,sure resulting in,
Slide lock easier to disengage.
No more trigger grit!
Less trigger weight , less travel & reset improved.
No joke , after running a couple mags I checked serial # to make sure it was my gun.
Anyway S&W warranty service came through very happy with outcome!
