Default Trigger on M&P 9mm Pro, how do you like it?

I recently purchase a M&P 9mm Pro. One of the reasons I purchased it was that I was looking for a better trigger than on the stock M&P 9mm and didn't mind paying extra for it. However, after going through about 1,000 rounds I thought that it felt heavy and had a gunsmith measure the trigger pull and it is almost 7 pounds. I'm considering purchasing an Apex trigger kit and having it installed but before I do I was wondering how most of you like the factory trigger. I called S&W customer service and they indicated that the Pro should have a 4 1/2 trigger pull which I'm fine with. I know that there will still be some play in the trigger which would go away with the Apex trigger but depending on your response, that might be ok. What bothers me is that I've already paid more to get a better trigger with the Pro and don't really feel like spending an extra $190 (trigger plus install) to get this weapon where it should be so I'm considering sending it back to S&W. What would you do? Let me know if a Pro factory trigger that is properly set works for you. Thanks, Jim

The only way you have a 7lb trigger is because you've bought a M&P for one of the restricted States. Either send it back to S&W or get an APEX FSS kit with the APEX trigger. Why did you buy it in the first place if the trigger was so heavy? Caveat Emptor. Stop trying to blame S&W for the trigger, blame yourself. Sounds like this is your first gun and you only found out about triggers after doing internet research after the fact. If you want a Sig or H&K trigger upgrade it'll cost close to $400.00 and a Glock about the same as APEX. Most guys here like to tune their guns just like motorheads like to tune their cars. Some guys here have spent a grand or two on their M&P to get it right for their personal needs. Buy a set of roll pin punches and put an APEX FSS full kit in and maybe get a new set of sights too and enjoy

ATF, this is far from being my first gun (have had them for over 40 years) and I don't live in a restricted state. I did a lot of research before I purchased the gun and chose it over a Glock 34. What purpose does it serve for S&W to advertise that the "Pro" has a 4-5 1/2 lb. trigger pull if that isn't the case. S&W agreed that it shouldn't be 7 pounds so why are you up in arms about it. As far as Careat Emptor, with a striker fired gun, you can't always know how the trigger is just by dry firing in a store. Many times it feels different when you are firing live ammo and also when you've put a few hundred rounds through it. You must be a S&W fan boy if you're worried about me blaming S&W. They made the gun and it doesn't meet specs so who else should I blame? BTW, I'm fine with the Novak sites on mine (the 5" model) and I love the accuracy of the gun but it will get better with a slightly lighter trigger. - Jim

I recently purchased a Pro 5 inch and also think the trigger is a little heavy, I'm also been wanting to take it to the gunsmith to have the trigger weight measure. I do have an other pro and the trigger feels much lighter so if it turns out that my trigger is not at factory spec (4.5#) I will send it back.

Venenoidy, are you fine with the trigger on your other Pro? That is the question I am really asking. If it's the general consensus that most people are pretty happy with the S&W trigger in the Pro if it is set correctly, I will go ahead and send mine back and have it adjusted. However, if most people put the Apex trigger in, I don't want to waste the time of sending mine back. Looking forward to your reply. Regards, Jim

I like my like my trigger now. I got the striker safety rounded up a little and went through all the surfaces and polished them up a wee bit.

Sothern Kiwei, have you checked how many pounds your trigger pull is now since you've made your adjustments?

I can't say i have.
My friend has an M&P Pro similar to mine and has had Jerry Miculek do a trigger job on it when he was in the states visiting him and they feel very similar. Don't get me wrong its still has a mile long take up but breaks clean and light.

Jim - I did a quick web search and immediately found two threads where Pro trigger weights of 7 lbs were recorded, and one where it was 6 lbs, the owners indicating being unhappy that the trigger weight was not 4 to 4.5 lbs.

I don't own a Pro, but have been shooting my FS9 since Nov '13, with and without Apex parts. It is MY OPINION that, although you could send the gun back to S&W, my guess is you will get it back in the same condition i.e. a 7 lb pull.

Be interested to hear other Pro owners chime in. Good luck.

Rich

Llando88, the S&W customer service agent assured me that if I sent it in with a letter of what is wrong, that it would come back at 4.5 lbs. Evidently that is the spec that the Pro series is supposed to be set at. When I talked to my gunsmith about getting the Apex trigger to reduce the trigger pull his first reaction was that if it was lighter than the one that came with the gun, it would be too light. That was based upon the fact that he had examined other Pro Series guns and they had really good triggers already. In this case it appears that they put the wrong trigger set in it. I know that I have a S&W 686+ Pro seven shot revolver and it has a great trigger and I can tell the difference between it and the regular 686s so I was surprised when after putting hundreds of rounds through this gun that it didn't lighten up. Anyway, if they can get the trigger to 4 1/2 lbs., I think I will be happy with it as long as it breaks clean and light. Thanks again for you feedback and thoughts. Regards, Jim

I recently purchased M&P Performance Center Ported C.O.R.E. 7+ pound trigger with my Lyman gage. No I was not happy with it, talked to S&W at the Shot Show told me to send it back. I put a APEX Fully Machined sear in it and now 4.5 pounds cost around $45. Used the same roll pins. I don't live in a restricted State. Maybe I got one originally going to a restricted State?? Love my Smith's

I can't give an explanation for the heavier trigger except that on the S&W website they do clearly state that a Pro model has a 4.5-5lb trigger and the standard models 6.5lbs, but not all models have a quoted trigger pull weight. Maybe the slides and frames get mixed up in the factory? On my the box my Pro came in it just says M&P 9mm and the SKU number. So I would suggest anyone with this problem checks their SKU number and either send it back to S&W or put an APEX kit in it.

The only time I've seen a trigger weight on a M&P box was my last pistol I bought from Bud's "Qualified Professional" program. It said 6.5lb on tag. None of my other M&P's have that. It also came with 3 mags and night sights so it was probably intended for police sales. I never measured the trigger and it was one of the first things I changed (along with a bunch of other stuff). Here's what my trigger pull was after I got done with it.

I actually really like it, it breaks clean and in my opinion it is just right for a self defense handgun.

I have 2 M&P Pros, one 5" used in matches with over 30,000 rounds and a 4.25" with about 5,000 rounds. One trigger was rough when new and the other a little gritty.
Both have settled down at a little over 4# (measured) and are smooth. I did a little light polishing on the SB.
Both are stock.
IMHO, you don't know what any trigger is going to be like until you shoot it a bit and polish out the rough spots as needed.
Also IMHO, if the trigger starts at 7#, it is not the Pro trigger in the gun.

OKFC05, I totally agree that if the trigger starts out at 7 lbs., it isn't going to get that much better with more shooting and after today, I've put about 1,000 rounds through it. I will admit that the grittiness that some have talked about is gone and I'm happy about that. I think that at this time I may take customer service's advice and send it back because it appears that enough of forum is happy with the S&W trigger. I also agree that maybe they installed the wrong trigger in the Pro model. You would think that they would take extra precautions before sending a special model out. What I hate is that I'm really liking shooting this gun and it may have become my favorite in my collection. Today I tried out some Remington HTP 147 grain JHP's and I really liked them and I think I could use them for self defense. I also picked up some Speer 124 gr.Lawmen at Cabela's and find those great for target practice and they were the same price as the inexpensive 115 grain ammo. I love this gun's accuracy and the way the Pro fits my hand so it's hard for me to think about parting with it for a month. I've almost convinced myself to spend the $190 to purchase the Apex kit and have it installed but I feel that it may not really be necessary if S&W can get the trigger right. Anyway, thanks everybody for your feedback and if I send it back, I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out. Regards, Jim

Elliot get the APEX FSS kit with polymer trigger and install it yourself. Even a moron could do it and there's plenty of people here to help you if you get stuck. You will also learn how your gun works and you will get a trigger pull like a revolver in SA.

jackrabbit000, it sounds like your Pro had the correct trigger installed and probably has a trigger pull around 4 1/2 pounds. Unfortunately mine measures almost 7 pounds. Just curious, have you ever had your trigger pull measured and if so, what was it? Let me know. Thanks, Jim

Elliot45,
From what I have read here, it will take S&W at least 6 weeks to get your gun back to you. Maybe their turn around is better now, I sure hope so.
We have 2 5" Pro's and a CORE. All of them have the Apex FSS kits in them. 2 have the polymer trigger and one has the aluminum trigger. I left the stock trigger return spring in and the trigger pull on them is around 2.5-3 lbs. We use them in competition and are used to lighter trigger pulls. If we wanted to increase the trigger pull, we would put the Apex trigger return spring in. The FSS kit removes almost 90% of the pre travel and as for over travel, what over travel. The trigger breaks nice and crisp. Apex goes on that the FSS kit makes your trigger feel like an 1911 trigger. The husband doubted that, now he goes on and on about how the trigger feels like his old 1911's. lol BTW, I do not like how the M&P's triggers feel physically, they seem thin to me. That is why all my M&P's handguns have had their physical triggers changed.

I do agree that if the website says 4.5 lbs. then the gun should have a trigger pull of that weight. Just keep in mind that it might take them a while to get the gun back to you and you have a 50/50 chance of them saying that there is nothing wrong with the trigger.

I have a circa 2012 m&p pro9 that I did like the trigger on. I shot it that way for a season before putting in an Apex comp kit. I believe the pro trigger broke at around 4 pounds she I pulled it out. When I swapped in the Apex kit it really was not an improvement until it broke it. Now the Apex kit breaks cleanly with less than a three pound pull, I am very happy with it.
Now back to the pro trigger. I placed the pro trigger group into my m&p 9c and I am quite happy with it in there as a carry trigger. I would say in the 9c it breaks at nearly five pounds and it rather crisp. I plan on shooting an IDPA match with it later today. The pro trigger really improved that gun.

I have a pro 9mm 5" and it is accurate, but the trigger is not so pro. The trigger on my shield is better and surprisingly, the trigger on my 22 compact is much better.

I'm sure the pro will smooth out with use, but if I hadn't gotten a deal and if there had been a standard full size at my shop at the time I would rather have had that. That said, it's not terrible and I'm not going to spend any money to upgrade it.

"...how do you like it"

Disliked it enough to self install an Apex Competition Spring kit and an Apex Poly Trigger...

It's my new definition of the word "love"

Thanks, Jim
I just picked up the M&P 40 Performance Center Model. The trigger pull is way too heavy and has a lot of play in it. I also have accuracy issues... Can't get a group of any kind at 25yds off a bench rest. Called S&W today and they also told me it should be set at 4.5 lbs and I should have no problem shooting 4" groups at 70'. I also checked out the same model before I bought it... Including trigger pull, and everything felt good. I do a lot of shooting and own over a dozen handguns half of which are autos and never had problems like these. S&W emailed me a prepaid Fedex label and it goes back tomorrow.

Wicchunter, I feel your frustration. For me, the travel in the trigger wasn't the problem because I always knew where it is going to break. But once I got there it just felt too heavy. I received a S&W return label too but I've since decided to get the Apex FFS trigger kit. I haven't had problems with accuracy and love the gun so maybe I'm looking to get closer to perfection. I know that S&W will reduce the trigger pull but since the Apex trigger will also reduce the travel in the trigger, I've decided to cure both. I have noticed that on Apex's site that they do sell a sear separately and I believe it is supposed to move the breakpoint forward so you might want to research that. Good luck and let us know how the S&W repair turns out. Regards, Jim

To move the break point with Apex parts you need to replace the sear and the trigger. The sear they sell separately is an improved stock item with the same geometry (just smoother). I have an extra Apex FSS trigger from updating to a flat faced trigger that I intend to put into a pistol just to see what will happen when the FSS trigger is used with a stock geometry sear. Haven't gotten around to it, other things seem to take priority. I'm not hoping to improve anything, just curious as to what will happen.

Bkreutz, thanks for the clarification regarding the sear, hopefully that will be of help to someone else. I'm hoping my trigger kit will arrive tomorrow and that I can get it installed on Friday so I can hardly wait to see the results this weekend. Regards, Jim

I have the M&P9mmPro and it came with the 4-4.5 trigger pull. Was like that on day one and it has over 2,500 rounds through it now. Terrific pistol:smooth, accurate and exceptionally comfortable in hand. By the way, my experience with S&W customer service has been exceptional. They will make right, anything that is wrong. You bought a fine gun...let them adjust it.

number13, thanks for your reply. I really should have sent it back to S&W and let them make it right. However, I liked most of the attributes you mentioned except for the trigger pull on mine so I decided it would be quicker to order the Apex trigger kit and have it installed than send the gun back to S&W. So I ordered it on Tuesday, it came today and will be installed tomorrow. Hopefully this will make a good gun great. You are correct that it is comfortable in the hand and it is one of the most accurate I've ever shot but I feel I will be even more accurate after this. I am glad that you like yours so much and I'll pass on your thoughts to my brother-in-law who is also interested in this model but doesn't want the expense of getting the Apex trigger kit. Thanks again for your reply. Regards, Jim.

Thanks Jim, if they fix the accuracy issue I'll be happy. If they fix the trigger also that would be great but I think I'll probably go the route you are going. Good luck with the install and can't wait to hear the results.

I pick mine back up today had the smith at the range move my Apex comp. kit from my 40 to the new 9 Pro. Will be running some rounds through her in a couple of hours.

Great forum, great thread, so joined a minute ago. Been lurking this forum since getting my MP9 Pro Series CORE. I used my Wheeler gauge and found my trigger pull weight at over 6 but less than 7 pounds. This is my first 9mm and first polymer gun. I've only owned revolvers (in the past) along with 1911s past and present.

After reading about these triggers here, I decided to opt for the Apex parts. My triggers on my 1911s are all 4#s +/- with little pre and over travel. I don't care to send the gun back to SW, and wait and then only get a lesser trigger pull. I'd still have the gross pre travel.

So, ordered up the one piece polymer trigger, competition spring kit and the hard sear. When I get these I'll install the trigger (for the shortened travel) and sear (for a lighter trigger pull weight) and see how that works. Will see what this does for trigger pull weight before installing the competition spring kit. I don't want to go too light.

Thanks for all your input here. Very helpful. Glad to be a member. lg
