What happens if I send modified pistol to S&W for warranty?
Just curious... I got Apex FSS and aftermarket sights installed on my M&P 9L. If I send it in to S&W for repair/warranty, will they deny to service my pistol? Or will they tell me that they gonna charge me $$$ for replacement parts because I voided the warranty?
Keeping all my stock parts in my parts bin just in case...

Sights are no big deal, but the APEX parts I would swap out with the factory parts.. not worth finding out the hard way.

Ruger would return it to factory spec and not return the aftermarket parts.

Smith & Wesson probably the same... I wouldn't risk the potential headache.

I've heard S&W used to put factory parts in & keep the after market parts but I "heard" they're not doing that anymore. I would put the original parts back just in case or give S&W CS a call & let them tell you what their present policy is. I don't trust what I read on the interweb too much.

Can't you just send back the part that has failed? Which part is it?

S&W WILL PROBABLY VOID YOUR WARRANTY, CHARGE YOU FOR SHIPPING 2 WAYS, REMOVE YOUR PARTS AND TRASHCAN THEM, REPLACE THEM WITH FACTORY PARTS, DO THE REPAIR, THEN CHARGE YOU FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE PARTS THAT THEY TRASHED AND ANY PARTS NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR, AND ALL OF THE LABOR COSTS INVOLVED. THE SIGHT WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. THIS COULD END UP BEING VERY EXPENSIVE. TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO LEARNED THE HARD WAY. REPLACE THE FACTORY PARTS BEFORE YOU SEND THE FIREARM BACK ! ! !

Ouch... Yeah, will definitely spend some time to swap out aftermarket parts before send in for warranty or repair.
Nothing's broken yet, only shot abt 300 rounds so far

Never experienced such but I did get an email about a Apex trigger job. It will void your warranty.
What will they do?
I would hope S&W would still service a gun out-of-warranty if you are willing to pay. They know if you have altered your gun they owe you nothing.
I doubt they would scrap your parts. They would likely fix what you ask but you would be charged for a factory service and any parts they have to apply.
Sights may not cause any alarm.
I think I would contact them and ask what they will do.
- Fix at no charge under warranty
- Fix at no charge for non-mechanical issues
- Fix and charge for changes that involve action of the gun
- Freight if a gun shop is involved
Please let us know what you do and what they do.

...and I would never take a chance on that. That'd be an easy out if they didn't feel like being generous that day. Just swap the parts if you have the means and be done with it. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

I recently sent in my full size 9 M&P for ejection problems and forgot I had the APEX trigger on it (no APEX internals, just trigger). S&W put in a new ejector, tested it, sent it back and never touched the trigger. Maybe I got lucky or maybe if it doesn't have anything to do with the problem they will leave it alone.

I think you would be safe with the Apex parts if that had nothing to do with the warranted failure but they probably have the right to void the warranty so if you need to return it, it would be a good idea to return it in stock condition. I sent my M&P 40 to get the slide lock replaced (the lever snapped off). I was embarrassed to notice that when it was returned that I had sent it back with the 9mm barrel in it (oops). They simply replaced the broken slide lock with a new one and said nothing.

It's not a great idea to send after markets in with a gun, any manufacturer's !
They have been known to come back with stock parts. Pull those stock parts out of your box , put them back in, and then send it in.
For heaven's sake do not send in custom pistol grips. You never know at some point along the line what can happen.

I wonder how long it would have took them to figure out what was up if they had tried chambering a 40
