Default Sear housing block with larger sear return spring and plunger for frame without TS

I bought a used M&P 9 that looks like a 2010 model. It has the older sear housing block with the tiny sear return spring and plunger. Do they make a sear housing block with the larger spring and plunger for the frames without the cutout for the thumb saftey? This gun just has the plug for the lock, but no lock.

Also would switching out to the new style trigger bar and slide lock eliminate the need for the Apex RAM?

Thanks!!

Brownell's should stock the standard sear block (which doesn't have the tumb safety). If it's current production, it should have the larger spring/ball.

FWIW, our 2006 M&P40s still have their original sear blocks with no issues. The change was a product improvement, not a fix for a known problem-at least AFAIK.

True, but if the OP wants to install an Apex forward set sear kit, it will require the larger plunger and spring.

The linked part on Midway MAY NOT be the correct one for the older style frames. It's hard to tell from the the picture, but there are two sear housing blocks and they are incompatible with each other.

G&R stocks the latest versions of parts, you have to put the item in the cart to see if it's in stock. They have a lot of turnover in parts so it may be in stock one day, and out the next. They also have a minimum $50 order (I've never had a problem getting to that amount )S&W Sear Housing Block with PC SEAR at G and R Tactical

Thanks, G&R says the one they have had the larger spring, but they are out of stock, as well as being out of the new slide lock and trigger bar. They said they will let me know when they have the parts in.

jdugan; If you replace the old sear block w/ a newer style, make sure you don't get the "Thumb Safety" version of the sear block. The sear block you are looking has a hole thru the center so S&W could put in a keyed safety block. If you get the "Key Safety" block, then all you need do is pull out the keyed safety(they are usaully not in the sear block anyhow!), replace it w/ the correct APEX RAM(2 models: 1 for mag safety, 1 for no mag safety), and put it back together and go shoot it. You will have an M&P w/ a pretty good trigger, and w/ the RAM, decent reset.
Now, you could try to obtain all the parts needed to upgrade the pistol to an "H" series trigger system, but finding all the correct parts will be an exercise in frustration as S&W won't sell or send those parts out to just about anybody any longer. The "H" series trigger would be nice, but your M&P w/ the correct sear block and a RAM reset bar is just about the same as a new "H" series trigger AND is much easier to do. It's what I have in my duty M&P and I have no trouble w/ it. The sear let-off and reset are just about perfect, IMHO.
Good luck, and ask questions if you don't understand.

Something else to bear in mind is that the engineers have made some revisions to the frames and sear housing blocks over time.

We were told in my last armorer recert that the newest SHB's wouldn't fit into the older frames, as the newer molded SHB's wouldn't align with part of the older frame mold/cuts.

I confirmed this when trying to slip a new 9/.40 SHB into my 2010 production 40c. It wouldn't fit (and I'm not interested in trying to modify the frame).

However, I also had a couple of older SHB's of the MA-compliant type, which already (originally) came with the larger sear plunger & spring, and which fit into my older production guns. (That was part of how the MA-type guns got heavier trigger pulls, with the rest being accomplished via a different trigger bar tail profile and a heavier trigger spring, I was told.)

We were also told that when the new guns came with the PC sear (as part of the new enhancements), that use of the H trigger bar provided for better engagement with the sear.

I've been told that S&W has changed how they look up compatibility of M&P pistols parts, BTW. (Found out when I needed to order some more parts as an armorer.)

Instead of the previous "general" model parts listing, they now look up parts needed for any particular pistol by its specific serial number, to make sure any parts needed are going to be appropriate for that gun. This apparently more easily allows them to keep up with any revisions or production run changes for different guns.

I'd imagine this will allow the parts dept & repair techs to keep track of which vintage/design of SHB fits whichever frame.

I was able to get a SHB with the larger plunger for this frame. It also had the mag saftey, but I was able to swap out the spring from my old SHB and remove the MS, and put in the Apex sear and spring, and knocked off the rear sight and got the stricker block changed out. Now if I could find a new style slide stop, it will be where I want it.

Keep watching G&R Tactical, they get the new ones in stock on a regular basis.
