Default M&P 22 reliable?

Im considering getting an M&P 22. I had one before but found it very unreliable after 200 rounds or so.

I know 22LR is a dirty round but it got very dirty very fast.

I have one with at least 5000 rds through and found it very reliable as far mechanical funtion, it is ammo sensitive as it doesn't like an specific type of ammo and so far it has only been one type of ammo (happens to be the weakest of all the different types I have). my brother has one also and it's very much the same way as long as you feed it good quality ammo.

It is a great gun. No problems with ammo with 1200 fps velocity or better. I've had good luck with Remington golden bullets and thunderbolts, and CCI mini mags. Thunderbolts especially are DIRTY...but cheap!

I think it was Blazer 22 that caused me issues with it in the past.

Generally rim fire are less reliable than center fire. Plus 22 is dirty. Also 22lr firearms are often more picky on ammo. While it should be a good shooter I wouldn't hold it to the same level or reliability as say the 9/40/45 version of the M&P

Mine is reliable. It just likes hotter ammo. It really liked some 20 year old Thunderbolts I had laying around and decided to use up.

I occasionally shoot mine because it's ammo picky. The compact model is the opposite and shoots everything so it gets used a lot.

Mine doesn't like Winchester 555 but other than that eats anything else.

Are you opposed to the 22 compact? Mine is quite reliable. I've only found one ammo it doesn't like. I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

The M&P 22 is made by Walther. The M&P 22 compact is made by S&W.

I did not like M&P 22 when I looked at one. I have heard the compact model is much nicer and higher quality but I could never find one to check it out in person.

I opted for the Walther PPQ 22, which has worked very well for me. I actually think it is closer in feel and function to my M&P 9 Compact than the M&P 22 because it doesn't have the thumb safety and the trigger is pretty doggone nice. The PPQ serves as polymer trainer for me and my family.

I'm sure the M&P 22's run well. Just offering up another option.

I've heard/read that the Compact isn't just smaller; it's really a different gun, and a much better gun than the "full size".

I have the "full size" made by walther. As long as I run specific ammo through it, it runs like a dream. I am seriously considering trading it in on a compact though because I've heard those are nicer.

I take it with me every time I shoot. the kids love shooting it and I love running a few mags through it and knowing it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Wow. Sounds like each gun prefers different ammo. Id really like to pick one up again as I have a 9mm fullsize but may get a Ruger 22/45 first.

I ran just over 10,000 rounds through my M&P 22 full size in just under a year that I owned it.

It ran nearly flawlessly with Remington Golden, CCI Mini mags, Aguila SuperExtra, Remington Thunderbolt (though run a bore snake through every 50 rounds or it'll start to keyhole), and what little Blazer I could find.

It had about a 3% average fail rate with all flavors of Federal ammo (red box, blue box, Automatch, and the hard plastic boxes). Most of these failures were fail to feed or fail to eject.

It had closer to a 10% fail rate (or more) with all flavors of Winchester ammo including white box (333), black box (M22) and the hard plastic case stuff. I just stopped using Winchester with that gun because it was too frustrating.

I sold it and bought an M&P 22 Compact, and it has been much more tolerant with different ammo types. I've had three fail to eject with Federal Automatch, Federal Champion, and Armscor ammo. The rest of the stuff I've thrown at it have performed perfectly (including the Winchester that was so awful in the full size).

I like the feel of the full size better (I have big hands), and it compliments my 5" Pro 9mm better, but the Compact just performs so much better that I don't regret selling the full size to buy the Compact.

I bought the FS 22 to go along with my FS 9mm Pro and 40 CORE. I love the gun but it is picky to what it will eat. I get the same results as DLister70 but don't mind that it don't like Federal Match because it shoot poor groups with it also. Feed it Remington Thunderbolts and it purrs. Don

My experience was totally opposite, I purchase a Ruger 22/45 lite and I couldn't get through a full magazine without a malfunction. my M&P22 runs great.

It is all the ammo. I can choke the life from my .22 compact by feeding it Federal. It runs like a top on CCI standard velocity, Rem Thunerbolt, and Rem Golden Bullet.

Anybody have an issue with the rear sights coming off during firing? Saw a review on a prominent site that the 22 compact had this problem. Anyone?

I've put over 12000 rds through my M&P22 in 18 months. The only issues I've had with it were my fault, not the weapon's. I stay with 1200 fps or higher ammo.

No issue with sights falling off either.

Good to hear!
I was shooting a 22/45 today and as much as i liked it (it didn't jam once) when I went over the top to drop the slide with my support hand...I was like "oh...this is different". I dont like sling shotting the bolt like that or using rhe slide stop to drop the slide.

Timjake have you shot the M&P 22 compact? Thoughts?

I have both the full size and compact, quite happy with full size until the Compact came along....it shoots any old junk i have in a can, has great feel in the hand and while pointing and is considerably more accurate than the FS. In fact since acquiring the Compact for Christmas the FS has not moved from the safe while the Compact digested 5000+ rounds of ammo. Other than a few dud rounds the Compact has yet to experience a malfunction.

Default 2 m&p 22s

My wife and I have 2 m&p 22s, serial numbers are exactly 100 apart from each other. Based on research I did before purchasing I knew they preferred copper plated high velocity rounds. We purchased bricks of American eagle hp, CCI mini-mag, and CCI AR 22. The higher s/n gun has been flawless, the lower s/n has has intermittent failures to strip a new round or jamming. My gut feeling is the the slide is dragging causing a timing issue. It seems to be getting better, and I hope it will break in fully with time. Both guns have around 300-500 rounds through them. I've been happily surprised with their accuracy.
