Default Apex Aluminum Flat-Faced Trigger Hows It Feel ?

Has anyone installed this Apex trigger kit in their conceal carry pistol? Apex Aluminum Flat-Faced Forward Set Trigger .

And if you have how do you like it? Not talking about the kit itself but rather the flat trigger. How do you like just the trigger over the stock smooth curved style trigger that was stock in the pistol .

I know how the trigger pull feels but wonder how people who have installed it like the feel of the flat trigger. Is it wider then the stock one ? I understand there is little to no over travel with it and am interested in putting it in my 40c for concealed carry with the 5# trigger spring.

I have the flat trigger in my 9 Pro and like the feel but it came with the whole kit. It was in my 40 CORE but wanted to use the CORE for home protection so moved it to the 9.

The flat faced trigger has to be used with the forward set sear. The geometry is different and Apex says not to try to use with the stock sear. I intend to try to use the flat trigger with a stock sear but haven't tried yet. I have the flat trigger on both my comp guns and wouldn't trade them.

Thanks for your reply Magload. Are you carrying your 9 with it in it? Do you happen to know what your trigger pull ended up being with the kit and trigger ?

Do you notice the trigger safety when you shoot? Or once you start shooting you don't pay any attention to it.

Is the width of the flat trigger a little wider then the stock trigger on your 9 was? It appears to me to be just slightly wider but haven't seen one in person.

I would hate to buy it then decide I didn't like it because of the trigger safety. Trying to find someone who has one who might let me shoot theirs .

Whitwabit,
Just got the Apex aluminum flat faced trigger kit installed last week. Only got in 1 range day with it so far. I put it on a M&P Pro CORE .40 S&W, intending for it to be an open carried back up for me when bowhunting and a fun range gun.

The included silver spring = 4.25 # measured pull. With the green spring that is included pull was = 5+ #. I choose to go with the silver spring. Both measurements are close to what Apex publishes with those springs.

It is a world of difference so far … 0 take up or over travel. Breaks clean. There is no tinny, creaky, or hinge like sound or feel to it. The safety activation on the trigger is there and you can feel it so you know you are engaging it, but it is unobtrusive.

This Apex kit eliminates the reset feel or sound. If you want a reset sensation there is a separate bar that Apex sells to recreate the feel when/where the trigger resets. I put that bar in my gun.

The OEM trigger is .345" wide. The Apex flat trigger looked to be the same width and worst case within +/- 5 thousandths (could not fit my calipers inside the trigger guard to measure).

I had planned on buying the whole kit, Apex Flat Faced Forward Set Trigger Kit and would probably use the green spring to get the 5+ pound trigger pull since my use of my 40c will be CC. My 40c doesn't have a thumb safety.

Couldn't really tell if the flat trigger was wider or not or just looked wider because it was flat and not curved. Did you go with the red or black trigger ?

My 9mm Pro is my race gun I would not use a mod'ed trigger in a SD gun. Don't need to give the DA something else to use against me. Don

Yes, they do not sell the aluminum flat faced trigger by itself, it is the kit. For me I got the aluminum black kit.

A buddy of mine has one. I tried it and it feels alot more like a 1911. I did notice the trigger safety, but that's not surprising since I don't have any pistols that have them. I'm not sure yet if I want one. The trigger was crisp, but I'm not a fan of the trigger safety.

A modified trigger at 5 pounds or more is no different then the many pistols that come from the factory at 5 pounds.

I keep hearing people saying they don't want to give the DA something to use against them. When referring to trigger kits in pistols used for CC !! Yet have never heard of an instance that it has actually happened. That a DA used it in a trial, are there instances that you know of?? Have you actually seen a case where that has happened ?? The fact a trigger kit was installed in the victims weapon was brought out in court??

I am not saying that it couldn't happen but I couldn't find an instance that it did happened either. The circumstance of the SD shooting is what will be brought up. Now in an accidental shooting yes could see the DA using something like that. But simple rules of engagement the first is never have your finger on the trigger unless you are willing to shoot the object that weapon is pointed at !

People I've talked to with that type of trigger safety say they don't notice once they start shooting it few times. I'm wondering if I will like that or not also ! I've dry fired a pistol with the forward set put with the polymer trigger and it is very crisp, and very nice and smooth. so much different then the gritty trigger I have.

How many of Massad Ayoob's books have you read? If you haven't read any I would recommend them for everyone carrying. I figure he knows a lot more then I do and if he recommends something I probably should consider doing it.

I don't need a 3 pound trigger in my SD gun heck I shoot my GP-100 just fine in DA.

Now should we talk about reloads for SD. Sry just got carried away. What ever you use that saves your life or someone else is the right thing and you can worry about what happens later. Don

I don't have any experience with the flat faced trigger, but I have the Apex polymer trigger in my Pro Series along with the DCAEK. If you've ever shot Glocks, the trigger feels about the same, so far as noticing the trigger safety. I've never heard anyone complain about them in Glocks, and for me it is a non-issue in my gun.

For what it's worth, the Duty Carry kit and Apex trigger along with the original S&W trigger spring give you a pretty darn nice action for a self defense gun, of even a non "race gun" competition pistol. There is still a decent amount of take-up, but I want that on a gun with no safety. However, it is smooth and breaks crisply with very little over travel. You can adjust the over travel, but I left a small bit in because it made me feel it would be more reliable.

As for a modified trigger in a self defense gun, I'm a hobbyist and this is one of my primary paper punchers. It is also my bedroom gun and I'm not so worried about a DA if I'm forced to use it inside my house. I have left my Shield's trigger stock, it's fine for what I need.

I have read a book by Massad Ayoob. Many of his books were written before the current CC laws became effective, and many are 2nd and 3rd addition books written many years ago when he was much younger! A justified shooting with a pistol with a 3pound trigger pull is no different then a justified shooting with a pistol with a 5 pound trigger pull!

Rereading my comments you will see I'm not talking of a 2-3 pound trigger pull on a carry gun but a 5-6 pound pull .. Which many brands of pistols come stock from factory with .. What is the MP Pro Series pistols trigger pull from the factory ??

My 40c is 9.8 pounds and feels like you are dragging the trigger across a file with 2 deep gouges.

All I can say it matters in OC,CA. Rules for CCW forbid modifications that "adjust" the trigger pull. If you buy a handgun with a 5# pull and it's accepted on your CCW, you're good. If you buy one with a 8# pull and reduce it to 5#, your CCW can be revoked.

Hey IANAL, but it seems to be wise to check with your local issuing authority if you are subject to licensing requirements.

Here are 2 key sections as they relate to this topic:

b) The Sheriff reserves the right to inspect any license or licensed firearm at any time.

c) The alteration of any previously approved firearm including, but not limited to, adjusting the trigger pull or making other modifications that create an unsafe weapon (Penal Code §31910) shall void any license and serve as grounds for revocation.

Saudade, that is in your wondrous state of California. No such law in the state I live in and people in Ma seem to all change their 10# trigger pull on new pistols sold in their state. but no such law there for used guns ..

The sheriffs in my state have no say in a CC permit!
