Default Won't always go into battery. Shield 9.

I've noticed when I do a press check (1/16" of an inch or less) and release the slide (magazine inserted), the slide will stop just short of fully forward in battery 25% of the time.

Win 147 "Defend" ammo.

Apex Duty/Carry upgrade.

Rem Oil in all the recommended places.

8+1 Magazine fully seated.

A light tap on the back of the slide and the gun goes to full battery.

Have not been to the range yet with the Apex upgrade so maybe it has to "shoot in".

Any thing else I should be checking?

Thanks

Sounds like you don't have many rounds through the gun. Put 200 rounds through it and see if you still have any problems. Mine was stiff at first too.

I've got about 5-600 rounds through mine, and I just did a press check.

Nope, won't go fully into battery without a nudge.

Mine's over 3yrs old now and when the chamber is loaded AND the mag is full, mine doesn't always go back into battery if I press check, which I only do when someone posts a thread like this.

Mine will not hang up with a full mag and empty chamber, nor does it hang up with one in the chamber and a NON- Topped off mag. It appears that the combination of the friction/pressure of having one in the chamber AND the upward pressure of a full mag, is just enough to create the 'perfect condition' of not going back into battery.

The thing is, in the 3yrs I've been carrying it, I have never inadvertently nudged it out of battery, during holstering, or otherwise daily carry. The only instances I remember reading about Out of Battery instances, were during deliberate Press Check... None (that I recall) were caused inadvertently.

So, if you're worried about it going out of battery at times OTHER than during a Press Check, you don't really need to. During those few times you do a Press Check, just keep nudging it back into battery, as you have been. Go shoot that thing.

Grease the front of the barrel hood where the slide locks up.

I've yet to have this issue.

Is a press check really necessary when there's a loaded chamber indicator?

I don't see the big deal here, you do a press check (yep it has one in the chamber) let go of the slide it is not back in battery nudge the slide, its in battery. Time to holster, put thumb on back of slide (like I was trained to do) this keeps gun in battery while holstering. when gun is drawn there is no worry of it going out of battery, so can someone explain to me why this is a big deal.

I can't think of a time where you'd be softely letting the slide go forward, but if there ever was such such a time you'd probably have time to smartly smack the back of the slide to ensure it was fully in battery.

Also if you're worried about it being pushed out of battery when holstering it, I would think it would be pulled into battery on drawing the pistol.

In low light, the rim of even the shiniest brass is hard for me to see through the small portal on the top of the slide.

I'll try greasing the hood.

I know the engineers worry these things to death, but all systems are compromises. Is the recoil spring system's compromise the last millimeter into battery (on a press check) in favor of appropriate recoil operation on firing and going into battery on a slide release from full lock back? Hmmm....

I was wondering this same thing. Any gun I have in service (EDC or night stand) is always loaded with a round in the chamber. I don't have to look, the only time there's not a round chambered and mag in place, is when it's being cleaned or cleared at the range. That's just me, though.

Every time I see this topic (which is often) I'm reminded of that old joke:
Patient: Doc, It hurts when I do this!
Doctor: Don't do that!

In and gone before the dire predictions of what's going to happen when someone grapples with you for your gun.

Aren't all shields equipped w/Loaded Chamber Indicator? If so... why do the press check?

That's a question/debate that's been going on almost as long as the Double-Stack vs Single-Stack debates and Glock vs M&P vs [Fill-In-The-Blank] debates and they never end well (bring Popcorn).
