M&P Full sized 9mm vs XDM
I am in the market for a new gun, and think I've decided on the M&P, but wanted some other opinions. I realize that some of you will say that I should go out and shoot them both, but I have limited time and resources to do so. The M&P can be purchased at my local gun store for $399 plus tax (new). The XDM can be purchased (used) for $500, but it comes with 3 magazines, a holster, and a mag pouch. Without the accessories included, I think it is about a wash for price. With that said, what are the pros/cons about each? I will be using it for CCW and for range plinking. I don't want a shield, as I think it is too small for plinking.

$399.00 would be hard to pass up.

I have M&P and xd. Like them both but M&P would be my choice. Also the holster & mag pouch that goes with xdm are not all that nice. You will want a better holster to carry gun in.

Not sure about the M&P but the XDM comes with what they call a match barrel and the safety's, trigger and grip safety along with the round indicator is why the XDM is a $500. gun. The full size XDM is not really big however the mags hold 19 rounds each. Get a third magazine and have all three with the provided holsters and there is a lot of firepower on your hip. This only matters if you can shoot.
I do need to get my hands around a M&P....

Either gun should serve you well. I have/had both. Ended up selling off the XDM (I prefer my XD tactical to be honest between the 2 XD variants ).
While I prefer the M&P, how the gun "fits" you is a very personal matter. What suits me, may not suit you. Both companies have great customer service reputations, & lifetime warranties. Bottom line, go with what you prefer in terms of feel, fit/ finish, attributes and accessories, if any.
Good luck

I'd go with the Smith. I had an XDM, and found that the high bore axis increased muzzle jump significantly.
Don't get hung up on accessories, which may or may not suit you. Just my .02.

I'd get the M&P. The XD's grip safety is a deal breaker for me. In the chaos of an actual self-defense scenario, you'll often take a less than ideal grip on the gun and the grip safety becomes a huge liability in such cases.

I own an XDm 4.5" 9mm and love it. It is a tack driver. That said, I also love my M&P's. As stated in previous posts, it is a personal choice. Overall, the fit and finish of the XDm is nicer and you pay for it. When I was faced with the same dilemma, I went to my LGS with an indoor range and was able to compare the two. I left with an XDm. Before I purchased my Shield, I was also considering an XDS. I liked everything about the XDS but the Shield just felt right and was the better choice for me.

I have both an M&P 9 FS and Shield. The Shield is still a fun plinker. That being said I love my FS 9. I shot an XDm and M&P before I bought and the XDm just didn't feel right and I witnessed it jam up.
