Default I don't own a single 9mm...

So I am an avid shooter, have a safe full of guns, and not a single one of them is a 9mm. I don't have anything against the caliber, I just haven't found a 9mm that I wanted that wasn't available in 40. I'm not saying that 40 is better, I just like to stay as caliber specific as possible. Currently all of my pistols are either 22, 380, 40, 45, 38, 357, 410 or 44mag. Anyone else in the same boat? Own a plethora of handguns and not a single one is chambered in the most common centerfire pistol cartridge? This was just an AH HA moment...

mine are all either .22, .380, or 9mm.....mainly for stocking fewer calibers of ammo

That was kind of my scenario as well until I added a Governor, M&P340, Model 29, and a Desert Eagle to the mix!

I can understand your preferring everything in one caliber.
All my Pistols are 9mm. Even my Derringer is 9mm.
Heck... Even my Ruger Blackhawk is a .357/9mm Convertible.

This sounds like a serious problem which needs to be rectified ASAP. If you are looking for something caliber specific, you are not locked into a handgun platform and you have plenty of extra money laying around... might I suggest a TAVOR SAR B17-9 bullpup. An added bonus... it's made in the USA.

Ha! My Uncle just picked up the 9mm Tavor. My thinking is why would you want a 9mm in that platform when it could be a 5.56? I will be adding a Tavor very soon! That was the last rig I was going to buy, but I ended up buying a M&P10 instead. Have to start convincing the wife that the Tavor would be essential to possess!

I sold my Sig P226 which was my one and only 9mm way back in 1990. It was a nice shooting pistol, but I never warmed up to the 9mm cartridge. Since then I've only bought pistols chambered in .40s&w.

I do still have my S&W Model 27 I bought new back in the mid 70's and I'll never part with!

So...for pistol calibers I have 3....40s&w, .38spl, & .357mag

Nope, can't relate. I've got at least one of everything. Just recently made a trade for a 10mm to go with the rest.

It might be old school, but a BHP is an excellent reason to own a 9mm. And a Glock is an EDC beater that's practically expendable.

I did a quick mental count, I have at 11, at least.

Not sure how that happened, picked up one here, one there, and like rabbits they're suddenly everywhere.

257wby, in your defense the 380 is a SHORT 9mm.

Bullet Bob, you may be right, I did a quick mental count
& don't remember buying 7 different calibers. Maybe they
are like rabbits.

I bought my first 9mm last year. A shield because my wife wanted a shield and the 9 was the first and only one that we found(until the following week and they were all over the place). Two weeks later I bought my shield in 40 ans she shot that better, so, I had a 9mm. I sold that about a month ago and replaced it with a Talo Kryptec shield 40 to consolidate calibers for reloading.

I have no use for a 410 but all the other same cartridge plus a 9mm and a 5.56/223 , 7mm rem mag , 308 and 12ga so I think that makes 12 cartridges

The 9mm is far superior to all the rest, when you have to pay for ammo. I also have 40s and 45s along with 38/357s. the revolvers are what I use mostly as I reload and can't be bother craweling around looking for brass. Russian steel case 9mm even gives me a out on that chore.

I was just referring to handguns. I haven't even thought about all of my long gun calibers. The 410 is a Governor (410, 45LC, 45ACP). It is a blast to shoot.

10-4 on the Hi-Power. That's what got me into 9mm to start with. Didn't want a 9mm but I did want a Hi-Power. Now I have two Hi-Powers, a model 59, and a 659.

I used to have a Llama in 38 super that was hard to feed. Few stores sold those rounds back in the '70s. When I first started getting serious about a more modern defensive handgun I labored over which caliber would be best. Accessible, plentiful, fun to shoot and affordable, the 9mm seemed a good choice and the Ruger SR 9 filled the bill.
Then I wanted to have a .22 for the wife to learn with, so a Sig Mosquito came home. Added a Beretta 92 FS, Cheetah in .380 and a Kimber 1911. Got her a Sig in .380 and me a 938 for IWB
Caliber suddenly didn't matter so much anymore. Added a few Pythons, a 686, 27-2, 14-4 and .38/357s are in the mix.
Where will it all end?

I trained all my life with 1911 .45 ACP. I own a .357 that was bought for a special need (in 1986), and the obligatory .22LR to save on costs.

I'm now heavily into the 9mm camp (sold most of the .45) for medical issues.

Cancer Doc said no more .45 / 12ga /.308 - they all went to consignment. Mind you he and I shoot together, so he knows what happens at the range.

Stage 4 cancer guy here. Getting old is not pleasant. Not getting older is worse.

So in 2009, I would have not even considered a 9mm. Hated the Army for changing (even though I did get my issue .45 out of the deal).Today, my same beloved .45ACP causes bruises and pain.

22lr (for teaching beginners),
.380acp (carry),
9mm (carry and competition),
.45acp (HD and competition),
.44Mag (range whomper),
.223/5.56 (requisite ARs),
.35Rem (my hipster cred, deer-capable),
12ga (HD and competition)

Next caliber on the chopping block is either .44Mag or .35Rem. Already sold a .44 DE, still trying to sell an SBH, but if I find a nice Marlin 1894 then the .35Rem can go.

As for pistols I have had 25, 380,38 spl, 40,45 and 9mm. I slowly sold most of my pistols because I just had them sitting in the safe and never carried them. I kept my 40 until I decided that it was fun and great gun but for self defense a 9mm made much better sense. The wife could shot it, I could get ammo cheaper, I only had to worry about that one caliber. So I sold just about everything for a sheild and a glock 19. The glock sits in the safe and is being consider being turned into a range toy.

Two (2) 9 mm handguns. 1940 Luger and H&K P7 M8. I would like to add a BHP.

My story would be exactly the same as yours if you replaced ".40" with 9mm. I have nothing against it, and I'm sure it's an effective round, but I never saw the point in adding another caliber, as, like you said, most guns in 40 also come in 9mm.

257wby One 5,56 is a pistol and one 308 is a breach loaded single shot handgun . Still have no use for a 410 handgun or long gun .

I'm on the same boat. I have a .40 and 45.

The BHP is an easy choice. CZ is another.

Glock was a consideration for some time, but I'd rather have a larger flat pistol than a square one. Maybe someday. Probably not.

I really like the alloy framed single stack Smiths. They're just hard to find and kinda large for caliber.

If it doesn't make a practical carry, I have little interest in it.

In the end I went with a modern CCO style 9mm 1911. When I can't decide, I'll stick with what I know and like.

No 9mm here. .22, .32, .380, .38, .357, .40, .44, ,45. I don't have a problem with 9mm either, and have owned a couple over the years including a 70's vintage model 39 that was a beautiful little pistol that I really wanted to love, but could never get to make it through a full magazine without jamming one way or another. Finally let it go.

I've been toying with the idea of a 9mm Shield for the slightly lower recoil and another round in the magazine, but I suspect I wouldn't quit carrying the .40 even if I had a 9.

I have all 5 major calibers. 9, 40, 45, 38spl/357.

I quit buying weird or hard to stock for calibers. If I can't get it by the case cheap I don't bother

I am just the opposite. Most of my life I had .22, .357, .380 and .45s. Then I got my first 9mm, the M&P 9mm Pro with a 5" barrel. It may be the most accurate handgun I own. Since that purchase, I've also added a 9mm Shield and it is my main CCW and I've found new appreciation for the 9mm caliber. So I am the opposite of you in that I've never seen a need for a .40 as I just as soon have a .45 if I'm going that direction. Never mind the argument over .40 vs. 9mm, there is no one magic bullet and I've seen multiple reports that indicate regardless of caliber, it takes more than one shot to bring down most people. To end that argument, for self defense at home I just purchased an M&P AR15 Sport. Best of all worlds. Regards, Elliot45

Ditto.... I had 9mm and .45s when the 40 was introduced...... I asked myself why?..... and for what?....... couldn't find an good answer.

That said;

About 10 years ago I finally bought a 40 ...... a lightly used Sig 229 which came with both Sig .357 and 40 barrels; and 6 mags. It's my "if my stash is gone and I can only find .357 or .40 ammo" gun...... which is what happened 2 years ago.....

My stash was still GTG but only .357 sig and .40S&W on the shelves here..... so I started a new but smaller stash!

I do not own a 9 mm either. I prefer a .45, and that is what I carry. I do have several back up guns in .380. I have shot a 9 mm and it is a lot like the .380 to shoot. I have heard a lot of problems with the 9 mm over penetrating, but that may only be with ball ammo.

I kind of circled the wagon on 9mm before finally jumping in earlier this year with an M&P Pro. Like a previous poster mentioned above, it is an insanely accurate handgun and I shoot it the best of all my pistols. I started off buying three 22's and then a 45 and a 12 gauge, before finally buying the Pro in 9mm.

Plinking;
Sig 1911-22
M&P 22C
Ruger 10/22
HD;
Remington 870 12g
Remington 1911 R1 45acp
Range gun;
M&P Pro 9mm.

I absolutely love the 9mm caliber and use it for my range gun but would gladly use it in an EDC gun and/or HD. It is an extremely versatile caliber with a lot of different offerings in terms of penetration and power. I never saw the need for .40. If I'm going to "go bigger" than 9mm then I'm just going to go .45.

.25 , .38 Spl., .45 ACP and .45 Colt here. Don't dislike the 9mm (have had several) just at this point I'm fine with what I have. Don't care for the .40 as I rather the 9mm for ammo cost or go with the .45/.38 that I already have, although a 10mm would be mighty nice.... And looking at getting a .380 soon.

This thread gives me a headache. All I can think about is caliber changeovers on the reloading machine. Good luck with that.

And why is that? Just curious. Do you still pack a government model 1911 when you are wearing your bermuda shorts in the summer?

Let me chime in with every one else.

As I'm getting older, I'm simplifying. Limiting calibers. In pistols I have .22lr, 9mm, .38spl/.38sc/.357mag/.357max, .45acp, & .44mag. And in rifles they're all either 22lr, .223/5.56 or .308/7.62.

That's limiting the calibers? Well that's down about 6 from what I use to have 5 years ago.

(Oh don't count the odd, throw down Mosin or the 30/30 lever. Or my granddads lemon squeezer in .32 )

I only have one 9MM, an old Ruger P95 I inherited from a friend. But I have lots of others...just counting the other day I have 9 revolvers that can handle .38 (a couple are 357s), several in 45Colt, a couple more in 45ACP, a couple .380, several 22, a 22mag, even a .25auto *** that someone gave my wife. I may add another 9MM in the future as I do like the cartridge and feel that anything used by the military makes it an easy one for ammo availability. I do have one .40 as well, which shoots quite nicely.
The shotguns are either 12 or 20, but the rifles are chosen for specific uses, deer, elk, oryx, antelope, pig, etc. So they are all over the board!!

hoc9sw, prayers sent.
so if 9mm ammo has improved so much that it is equal to 40 cal, 45 cal, does that mean that no manufacturer did any upgrades to 40 cal?
Have 38, 380, 9,357, 40cal in pistol.

I waited about 35 years to buy a 9mm luger pistol. I purchased a CZ85DB.
AWESOME pistol.

The 40 never interested me. I have the 7.62 tokarev .380acp, 9mm makarov, 9mm luger, 9mm largo, 32acp, 45acp.

I don't care for lesser stopping power the 9mm but I have them. The craze in the 9mm pistols was the capacity.

Wearing shorts? I just started wearing shorts. I have a ugly leg I cover up. I make every doctor/surgeon cringe. First it slammed a big bumper on an old car, then I was run over by my tractor. I just purchased those under knee brace socks. At 64yo I'm no six pack more of a 30 pack lmao

Only 1 9mm. Springfield P9 LSP. Quite frankly the most accurate handgun I've ever shot.
Carry Bodyguard 380 or Glock 27. Mostly the 27, love the subcompact 40 cal.

I'm a .44/.45 fan, but have more .38s and 9s than .44s and .45s.
I have no use for a .40.
9mm brass gets stuck inside .40 brass in the tumbler.
.40 brass gets stuck inside .45 brass in the tumbler.
All three get stuck and create quite the cluster-F.

Lately, my SR9 has been my most carried auto.
I can't make it malf.

Booo! Hiss!

JK.

I haven't had a 9mm in about a decade. Looking forward to a 9mm carry gun soon. I'll then have 22lr, 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, 38spl, and 357 magnum in handgun calibers.

The wife wants to add a 380 and that's okay, too.

It doesn't hurt to diversify. I like having the caliber that best suits the particular gun.
