Default 40 Full Size Firing Pin Hole??

The elongated firing pin hole in my full size 40 doesn't look right to me. Is this how they come from the factory?

I believe I read some where, correct me if I am wrong (according to my wife always wrong) but I think that is done to keep it from shaving brass off the casing so that the firing pin does not get clogged and cause light strikes.
Maybe wrong though.

If you think that doesn't look right, check the primers on your fired cases. Both are normal and all M&P's look the same.

Last trip to the range I experienced light strikes and failure to fire. Ammo was factory 180 grain TMJ by Independence. In looking for the cause I noticed the elongated firing pin hole and thought I'd check with the forum regarding it. I cleaned the firing pin and its channel and will revisit the range to verify its function. I never lubricate the firing pin or its channel. The trigger bar and sear appear to function normally with a distinct reset.

This pistol has been my home defence pistol and I've never had a problem with it. It's been so reliable I almost didn't take it to the range. The only reason I took it was to compare it with a Glock 23 I just purchased. This experience has taught me to never take any of my firearms for granted.

It's a soft shooting 40 and the last trip to the range it never stuttered. It's been sitting on my bedside table since then ready to go; or so I thought.

Problem solved. Just ran 150 rounds (Blazer Brass & Win Bonded JHP) through my full size 40 without a hiccup. I'm going to make it a point to clean the firing pin and its channel after each use.

Still love this pistol. Soft shooting and accurate.
