Holster for the shield
I'm doing research for holsters for my new shield. I've read some posts and looked up the brands people have mentioned. The ones I'm looking at are hidden hybrid, crossbreed supertuck, remora carbon carry, and old faithful. I have some questions about comfort and material. Looking at the online pictures, the part that touches your skin looks to be very stiff and uncomfortable. I had a high noon holster before for my revolver but there was no backing so I've no experience with these. I saw a youtube review of the super tuck and it looked great. I love the idea of it being adjustable for height/cant. What is the benefit of horsehide? It's more money but I don't know if I need it. Hidden hybrid has polymer clips, I don't know if those are better than the standard clips. Remora is on sale so that's a benefit if they are pretty much the same.
I am also looking at getting a pistolwear PT2 for running. I've read that you should also have it in a pocket holster and some have mentioned Desantis sticky pocket holster. Has anyone used this combination?
Is anyone willing to post pictures of their Shield in the holster so I can see what they look like with that specific gun please?
TIA
edit-spoke to cs at Cross breed, she suggested the premium cowhide instead of the horsehide. She said it was easier to break in and more comfortable.

The first Hybrid clone I bought was the Comp-Tac MTAC and it was ok. It had a more refined leather backing than some of the other clones, ie, the screw's were covered by leather. It was comfortable for the most part. When the shell broke I looked around and found the Bianchi Model 135 Suppression holster. It's basically a hybrid clone too but it does not have leather against your skin it has a mesh covered foam backing that is very comfortable. And the clips are C-clips and disappear on a black belt. Also keep in mind some holsters belt clips are HUGE or have emblems on them that stick out like a sore thumb.
Here's a pic of me wearing it. Wearing Holster

so I always thought with a hybrid like this, it was best worn at 5:00 position, behind the hip bone. I typically like to wear my holsters about the same position as you have in your pic. How does this type of holster do wearing in that position? Is it too much curving around your waist and hipbone? Comments. . .

also, check out AlienGear. They offer both a leather backed holster and their new version which is neoprene.

I can't speak for all hybrid style holsters, but my old MTAC and now this Bianchi Model 135 work just fine in the 3 -3:30 position. I've been wearing it in this position for over 7 years now, no issues with it conforming to my hip at all.

Is that the 3.0? I just took a look at the site and it looks nice and the price is right. Only thing is 4-5 week turnaround time.

I have several hybrids from the major manufacturers and some smaller local makers. If you are set on Hybrid you've heard/looked at some of the best already. Another option that might be more comfortable but still versatile is the Cuda (can be either IWB or OWB).
Cuda - Leather Concealed Carry Holster
This is one of my most favorite holsters (and I have some that are twice as expensive ...)!

Here's my Kimber Pro Carry II in the Stealth Gear Onyx.
Super comfortable, although a bit pricy.
My Shield in a Galco King Tuk.
Again, very comfortable.
The only issues I've seen with the CrossBreed is that anyone that orders it without the "combat cut" is disappointed and wished they had it with the combat cut.

I have the hidden hybrid and compared it to my brothers alien. Imo the HHH is easily worth the extra $. My brother never liked the alien much, to stiff not comfortable so when I suggested a firearmholster.com holster (he has to be different and did not want what big bro has) he got that one. Still like my HHH better but the firearmholster.com is also very nice.

That Stealth gear material looks nice. Is the hardware on the back side covered? disregard, found it on their website.

I carry mine in either an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 2.0 or the N82 Tactical professional series holsters. Both are very comfortable. The N82 is a single clip IWB holster that is very easy to put on and take off. The backing also completely isolates the gun from touching your skin which I like. It is slightly awkward at first due to the retention and how you have to twist the gun to draw it but with a little practice it gets very easy.
For me, I have to wear an undershirt tucked in behind the Alien Gear because it lets the grip of the gun rub my skin. Only takes about half a day of carrying before I get a pretty raw spot on my side. Both holsters are carried in the 3 to 3:30 position.

Plus 1 on the stealthgear. I've had a high noon. Uncomfortable as hell. N82 tactical professional. Extremely comfortable, but bulky and didn't like the bulge due to the clip on top of the plastic holster. Plus the draw was a little odd with the twist and release, not bad, but if I were in a panic situation I could see myself fumbling.
You won't feel the backing a of the screws on the stealthgear. I wish I discovered this holster before the other 2 I bought. At least I was only up to 2 though lol. I believe my search is now over.

My favorite holster after trying several high end ones is the High Noon Topless. Its an OWB holster but conceals very well. Very comfortable and well made. They have 22% off until Sept 28 too. Never seen them on sale before. I have a crossbreed too but feel it's too much holster for such a small gun. Crossbreed is nice for my Glock 19 size gun, but I use the High Noon Topless for the Glock 19 also most of the time. Just like how comfortable the OWB belt holsters are.

Do you have it for the shield or another gun? I was thinking that I could put a little moleskin on the screws if I did end up feeling it. I definitely would rather get something good from the start then go through multiple ones first.

You might find this video review helpful, although it is a bit dated (May 25, 2012):
Here are the Holsters reviewed:
CrossBreed Concealed Carry Holsters
White Hat Holsters
Hidden Hybrid Holsters
N28 Tactical
Galco holsters
Theis Holsters
Comp-Tac Victory Gear
" Update: probably my favorite IWB holster now is StealthGearUSA."
StealthGearUSA
I do like the 30-day 100% satisfaction offered by StealthGearUSA:
Quote:
Q: What is your 30 day challenge? Is it a trial period?
A: Yes, we guarantee that you will love your holster or we'll be happy to let you send it back for a full refund within 30 days of receiving it. We are that confident that our holsters will impress you. See HERE what others are saying.

One thing I have noticed that can vary greatly in the hybrid holsters, is the backing. I tend to sweat a lot, especially in the hot humid climate of Houston.
Check the backing on the StealthGearUSA
Quote:
The VentCoreź Platform: [backing]
The SGUSA VentCoreź platform that you'll find on all of our concealment holsters is constructed of 100% synthetic, High-tech non moisture-absorbing materials (as opposed to a non-breathable leather backing), and is completely vented for breathability and comfort. VentCoreź is what largely sets us apart from the others.
Here is what's inside the VentCoreź platform:
- The platform backing is lined with tri-dimensional polyester VentMesh (also used in high-end backpacking and mountaineering equipment) to wick moisture away from the body.
- Closed cell foam, strategically-positioned custom to each gun model, minimizes that uncomfortable weapon "bulge" by more evenly distributing pressure across the holster platform.
- A polyester-reinforced flexible support platform is used as a stiffener or armature to which all padding and mesh are attached. This is the "heart" of the platform.
- 100% hard nylon RhinoMesh facing is used where the weapon contacts the platform. This mesh has a twist in the warp yarn for extreme strength and abrasion resistance, but still allows maximum breathability. We have tested the durability of this facing mesh by holstering and un-holstering a gun in a test holster the equivalent of once per day for 30 years with NO visible wear.
- Ventilation: All closed-cell foam padding and the armature positioned between the top and bottom meshes of the VentCoreź platform contain laser-cut diamond-shaped ports. These vent ports give the holster its breathability. In our field-testing, we found that on a fully-vented platform, the perspiration moisture escaping away from the body passed through the ports and condensed on the metal slide of the weapon. To solve this problem, and to protect the weapon from corrosion, a non-vented area is designed into each platform underneath the slide of your firearm to protect the weapon from condensation moisture. We call this the "integrated moisture shield" and it is built into each holster, and custom to each handgun slide or barrel.
- and more

I'm just about there also with StealthGearUSA for M&P Shield.
At $79 (for the model for Shield with a laser), it is about $10 higher than other comparables. Seems like a very small price to pay for what will likely be a lifetime purchase for me. No time to be cheap on a holster given what I spend weekly on range rounds.

That's the appendix carry, IWB is $99. According to their site, they will have OWB available next month. I'm wondering if the Kydex would be able to be swapped between if you wanted to get both. I'm going to call and find out.

You're right. I stand corrected.
the ONYX IWB is $99.
OK, so that bumps up the difference to about $30 more than comparables. Gives me a bit of pause, but considering this is a long-term purchase, buying the high-end seems worth it to me. Others, of course, may have a different buying strategy.
Unfortunately, it looks like you can't swap out the kydex gun shell if your new gun doesn't fit the shell you have. But then, there's always eBay and other places to sell your holster if need be.
From StealthGearUSA FAQ:
Quote:
Q: If I buy a holster now and want to switch guns in 6 months, can I just buy a new kydex piece for the new gun and attach it to the holster platform that I already have?
A: When we started this business, our plan was actually to do just this -to make a few different platforms to which we would attach all of our kydex shells. Our goal was also to have the absolute best holster for each gun model. Those 2 things quickly clashed as we started making holsters and testing them. We realized that in order to have the best holster for a gun, we had to make the holster custom to the gun.
Our VentCoreź platform and Kydexź shells are custom fitted to each gun, and a result of that is that the Kydexź shells aren't interchangeable.
Another result is the absolute best fitted holster for each gun! There are some companies that have the "one size fits most" philosophy, and it can be a nice feature, but it sacrifices a lot of the things that make our holsters the very best you can buy.

I have a N82 (Nate Squared) Professional and it is really comfortable. Like 9shield said you have to give the gun a slight twist as you draw but it took me just a few minutes of practicing to get the hang of it. It is very secure so no one can grab the gun and pull it from the holster. The backing is a suede leather and is very soft and comfortable plus its shape keeps the pistol grip from touching your skin if you don't have T-shirt on. It is the only holster I have so I can't really compare it to anything else.
I am considering a StealthGear holster. The backing looks very comfortable and I like the idea that it is breathable.

I meant using the same shell and same gun but swapping between the IWB and the OWB. Seems like that would be possible.

Is the StealthGear OWB even in production yet?
I can't find a picture of one, and on their Gallery page it says: "Comming Soon".

I had a DeSantis 028 X7 IWB holster for my S&W Shield. I just do not care for IWB holsters and gave this one to my son to tote his wife's Shield in.
My son uses a Cross Breed Super Tuck for his Glock 19 and loves it.

The StealthGear holster also does NOT cover the handle of the gun. I wonder if this will present an issue like the Alien Gear holster?

I have three Crossbreed holsters. I ordered standard cuts and them combat cut them myself. Save a few bucks that way, and they are exactly the way I wanted them. It is very easy to do, just go a little at a time until you arrive at your perfect cut. I stand by my Crossbreeds a hundred percent.

Here's the info I found.
In October of 2015 StealthGearUSA is planning to release our first OWB holster. As with our other innovative holsters, the SGUSA OWB will be a game-changer. The time, craftsmanship, and ingenuity that has been put into the design of this holster will set it apart from the rest as the new standard in an OWB holster that is engineered for EDC use. Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to the release date.
Our first SGUSA Outside-the-Waistband holster has been in field-testing all summer and we anticipate it will be every bit as popular as the ONYX. It will be different than anything you have seen. A good selection of models will be released to the public very soon

Guess it depends. I know lots of people that carry the AG holsters daily with no problem. For me, more than a few hours and it gets pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, it's really comfortable as long as there is an undershirt behind it. Must have something to do with body shape??
The neoprene backing does feel really good against my skin, just wish it would cover the grip too.

I have the Alien Gear holster and a Firearm Holster from www.firearmholster.com
The AG holster is built well, and little less expensive, but for $49 shipped, the Firearm Holster is the winner. Better looking and more comfortable. Not as bulky. Has belt slots to convert to OWB if you desire.

Has anyone purchased the new Aliengear Gloak Tuck 3.0 IWB for the Shield? Seems that this one is just hitting the streets, the AG web site says it's the greatest thing (well almost) since sliced bread. I'm leaning that way but can't bring myself to follow through and order.

I'm wondering about that too. I've found a lot of reviews but I think they are of the older version since they mention leather against the skin and this has neoprene.

My son just got the AG 3.0 for his Glock 26 yesterday and I wore it around for a little while. I did find it to feel slightly better than the 2.0 version. If you already own a 2.0 I don't see the need to upgrade however if you need a new holster the 3.0 is the way to go. About 3 weeks ago I bought a new 40c and also picked up the N82 Pro holster for it but plan on getting the AG 3.0 sometime in the near future.

The AG 3.0 does look impressive, especially for only $43.88 + $8.95 shipping. All 11 reviews are 5-star.
They also have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Lifetime warranty.
and free shell swap if you ever change guns.

I'm glad I didn't jump the gun on the StealthGear holster. This AlienGear holster is looking very, very good.

The combat cut shaves some of the leather that is between your grip and body/waist, supposedly making it easier to get a "combat" grip at the expense of some comfort (less material protecting your skin from the gun). I don't have combat cut on any of mine, and I don't mind it at all. I'm not sure that it makes a huge difference in comfort or grip (I have other makers with a "combat cut" design) either way though.

I can't find any mention of it for these types of holsters but does anyone know if installing night sights will cause an issue? I know that lasers require a different holster but not sure about the sights. I found a post on here where someone listed the height of the Trijicon vs the factory sights for the shield and it is slightly higher.

For the Shield. Only gun I own. Trust me, you won't feel the backplate of the screws. This holster is so damn comfortable. I was lucky to get a few bucks back on the 2 other holsters, sold at a deep discount just because I don't want the dreaded drawer of holsters.
So look at it this way, buy a few that you may end up returning or get stuck selling. I am pretty new to conceal carry world, I'm lucky I got it right on my 3rd shot at looking for a holster. I'm no longer looking. If I ever get a different gun, it will be another stealthgear onyx holster.
I'm just not a leather guy I guess, hope this helps you out.

Thanks. Although I like the looks of it, I just can't justify the price if I want to get an owb as well. They offered me a 10% coupon code and said they have a sale planned for BF so we'll see what the sale is then. I think I'll be trying the Alien gear in the meantime and see if I like it.

Sorry, I can't come up with anything for "BF".
Please remind me. :-)
I've been researching the AlienGear Cloak Tuck 3.0, and have not found any negative reports.

I personally like Remora. They have a variety of carry options and shipping is usually very quick. I jumped on the Labor day sale with 40% off and a free mag holder. I purchased two new holsters. A hybrid holster and a new one for the shield with a mag compartment attached to it. There was a hold up on the hybrid holster and they gave a courtesy call to let me know what the problem was today and it was being shipped today. A+ for customer care seeing that I didn't call first to check on the order. This will be my seventh holster from Remora. There are a lot of good holsters out there but this has been my go to for holsters.

Sorry, Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Also my sister wants to buy my Beretta Neos so if I can sell that, I'd have a little more disposable income to justify the higher cost.

I own two N8Čand find them to be the most comfortable I have tried and I have a drawer full of rejects!!!!!
The one for my shield is now about 2 years old but except from taking the shape of my body it is like new.
I have fallen asleep while wearing it.
check at N82 Tactical for more info!

I was at my LGS/Range today, and asked one of the employees about holsters. Although the store carried a number of holsters, he highly recommended the AlienGear Cloak Tuck 3.0, which the store did not carry.
He said he has 3 AlienGear holsters, and they all have fit very well, and are very comfortable. I asked about whether the gun grip (which is not covered by the holster backing) caused him any problem when the holster was against his bare skin. He say no, no problems whatsoever.
He went on and on about how great they are, without any prompting from me.
So, IMO, that's another strong plus in favor of the AlienGear Cloak Tuck 3.0.
I still have not found any negative reports about it.

I ordered mine 2 nights ago so I should have it by the end of October hopefully sooner. Plus I was told that if I ordered another within the 30 day trial period I'd still get the 2 holster discount

@chele519:
Which type of clip did you order with your Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 IWB Holster- Standard Nylon (recommended)
- Black Steel
They have 3 additional clips you can add to your order: - "J" clips
- "C" clips
- Leather Loops (black or tan)
Anyone see a need for these?

If jmichael or chele buy the Stealth Gear Onyx for the Shield (no laser) and don't like it, I'll buy it from you.

Thanks for the offer -- much appreciated.
But I'm now at about 99.9% ready to buy the AlienGear holster. Just got back from another LGS/gunsmith, and they too had nothing but praise for the AlienGear.
I'l probably order tomorrow.

It's strictly personal preference.
I have the VZ Operator II's on my Kimber and after hitting them lightly with some sandpaper, there's no irritation at all.
None at all with the Shield.
My preference is to be able to grasp the gun and not having to shove my thumb between the excess material and the gun.
