Default M&P .40c Headed pin, trigger keeps backing out

On my 40c the headed pin for what I think is the trigger keeps backing out. It is the pin that is exposed when the takedown leaver is down not allowing the takedown leaver to go back. This only happens after firing about 100 rounds. Obviously its the force from each round firing causing it to come out a bit. it will not push in by hand I have to use a hammer/soft punch to push it back in. What can I do to stop this?

I don't know the history of your ownership of this pistol, who worked on it, etc. Did you have any issues installing the trigger?

I installed the kit and trigger, I know what I am doing and have done many trigger jobs. I am the original owner of the weapon.

Interesting. I noticed mine did this the last time I shot. It's got maybe 800 rounds through it and is stock. What is the production date on yours?

First, yes this is the trigger pivot pin - surprised to hear you guessing at what it is after many trigger jobs.

Second, the trigger pivot pin is not a spring pin, its solid and when the take down lever is up in the operating position it prevents the pivot pin from backing out. The take down lever pin itself has a little post that locks it and keeps the TDL from backing out and releasing when your firing. Is the take down lever also working its way out? If it is, the tang on the end of the TDL pin may be worn or broken. Good luck - stuff like this makes me crazy when it happens!

I know what the pin is I wasn't sure the proper name for it. My take down leaver is not backing out. When I called S&W they wanted me to put the gun back to factory parts and send it in for warranty. I really do not want to do this and its not a big deal that it starts to back out. I was just wondering if there was a fix.

It is in my gun safe right now but if I remember correctly it was late 2012 or early 2013

Just curious compared to mine. Mine is late 2014 IIRC.

If you have to hammer the trigger pin in, something is wrong, I've always pushed that pin in with my thumb, and I push it out with a punch that I just use hand pressure. That's why there is a head on the left side, otherwise it would fall out the right side. I'd be taking it apart and find out why it's so hard to push in.

In this case, sending it to S&W won't help. You have a different trigger and it will cause this pic to act differently.

Have you called Apex? They are very helpful with this kind of issue.

Meh. I say nothing to worry about.

My new M&P Pro does the same thing. That pin will not stay flush, if it weren't for the take down lever keeping it in place I'm sure it work its way right out.

Has done it from day one. I put an APEX CAEK in and it still does it.

No biggy, the TDL keeps it in place.

Default Look on the Right Side

If the pin walks out to the point where the TDL stops it, it's not fully supported by the hole in the right side of the frame. The right side of the pin would put higher bearing stress on the hole and the pin's end could wallow out a gouge in the bore of the softer polymer. My 40C's pin doesn't fit flush with the right frame surface and it's not walking left. Probably does't hurt anything but if the pin's hole bore got really squishy the trigger pull would suffer. Not much you can do with polymer frames. If it were really mangled you could fill the hole with epoxy and re-bore. Probably best to live with it. Something else will wear out first. I hate drifting out pins from polymer, or metal, a surefire way to shorten the life of the part if done too many times. Glock and S&W have engineered a marvel of lightweight, easy to manufacture technology, but it ain't hammer-and-tongs maintainable.
