Default Shield Magazine Dropping While Firing??

A co-worker told me that his Shield (40 S&W) sometimes will drop the magazine while he is shooting. Has anyone heard of this??

Thanks!

Only if the mag isn't fully seated.

Make sure he listens for the audible "click" when seating the mag.

I've read this before, but I've never had any problems with my Shield 40 doing it.

There used to be a problem like this with older FS M & P 40s. The fix was a new mag release button. Takes 5 minutes to replace. Contact Customer Service. They sent them out for no cost.

Could be something as simple as his thumb hitting the mag release while firing. Tell him to shoot it left handed to rule out his thumb hitting it.

As kcbet2 wrote, this used to be a problem with the 2012-early 2013 Shield40s. S&W took care of it and now-a-days, if there's a problem, it's most commonly User Induced.

If his Shield40 is an early model, he can contact S&W CS and get it taken care of. If it's a newer model, he should asses his hand placement, to ensure he's not inadvertently hitting the release. If he's sure it's not him... Contact S&W CS.

Yes it can and did happen to me, back in May 2012. But that issue has been fixed by S&W at the end of 2012. So if you ever have this issue, S&W will pick up the cost of shipping and the repairs. But if you have a Shield 40 manufactured after November 2012, it is a no longer an issue as Smith fixed the problem.

I would like to know the serial number range of the Shield 40 in question to see if this problem is starting again. It was a frequent complaint a while back.

I have an early model Shield 9 and it was dropping mags anytime, firing or not. I called S&W customer service and they sent me a new mag release. Takes about a minute to change it out and no problems since.

So what I'm hearing here in this thread is that we cannot trust our lives to the Shield. That it is a piece of garbage-totally unreliable. Right???

LOL!!!
Yeah... Sure... Okay... That's it in a nut shell.
Same goes for the XD-S, Gen4 Glocks, Kimber Solo, Ruger LC9 series and a few others.

Oh yeah... Don't look now but... THE SKY IS FALLING!

Did a search to ask this question.

I was shooting a rental Shield 9 at my local range last week. Did about 4 magazines.

In each case, the gun went 'click', not bang.

It turns out I was dropping the mag just slightly preventing it from shooting. I'm a lefty, and I guess my grip was so tight it was activating the mag release.

For you Shield owners, is this a common problem for left handed shooters? It is not possible to swap the mag release to the right side, correct?

Thanks for any insight on this question.

Rich
