Default New Performance Center Shield

Factory ported barrel/slide and Performance Center sear for a better trigger.

Not sure if the porting is necessary in 9mm but should help with some of the muzzle flip in .40 for sure. The PC sear should be nice for those wanting a nice trigger out of the box. I wonder what the MSRP will be.

Watch the video closely. There appears to me to be a LOT of flash coming out of the ports. Bad in the dark, and maybe not so good if you don't happen to have your shooting glasses on.

I'll look forward to hearing some real-life results, soon hopefully, but at this point I can't see myself buying one of these.

Nope... I definitely don't want Porting on my Self Defense pistols.
See my replies about porting in the other Performance Center (Ported) Shield threads.

Here's one... Will M&P Shield be offered with a ported barrel & slide?

As a very early on Shield owner, the first thing I did was replace the sights and install an Apex sear. Both were very solid improvements to that firearm.
Porting? Gas and smoke spraying out of my SD gun? Probably not for me.

Yes I definitely want porting on my defense pistols. I carry ported J frames all the time. Fired from inside my pocket and in complete darkness. Clothes did not catch fire and I was not blinded. I am a big fan of porting as it really helps tame the recoil. Where can I stand in line for one of these new PC shields!

I would like a chance to fire the new Shield back to back with my present Shield to what kind of difference the porting & the new trigger make. Yeah I know, fat chance of that happening. We'll see...

Is this thumb safety only? That would be odd because the full-size ported are NTS only.

I'm betting the video guys deliberately chose flashy ammo because they thought it would look cool.

I definitely want to shoot one.

All the gasses are safely leaking out the cylinder gap before reaching the porting.

I've got a Shield 9 & 40 and see no reason to want anything different. I can see porting on a high performance hunting gun; I just don't see the need on a compact SD pistol. But that's just me.... :-)

Why wouldn't they include night sights on this new Performance Center Shield?

I see they are now offering a regular shield with Tritium Night Sights.

I might spring for the Pef Center version if they included the night sights instead of fiber optic.

I have a plain jane thumb safety shield I bought in Oct 2013. It's bone stock but I would prefer to make the trigger a little better, get rid of the thumb safety and have night sights. That would make the shield perfect for me. But S&W still doesn't have an out of the box option for this.

Best I could do is get the no safety, w/ night sights Shield, and install the Apex trigger upgrades I guess.

I could then keep my stock shield as a backup.

I'm starting to rethink my earlier comment slamming the door on this version. The vast majority of the scenarios where I might, god forbid, need to use my Shield, would be so close quarters that having my night vision impaired by the flash from ports really wouldn't be much of an issue. Particularly when you add in the fact that, as an old fart, I tend to stay at home at night anyhow.

And while I have defended the 40 Shield as not having a lot more recoil (to me) than a 9, something that makes for faster follow-up shots shouldn't be completely ignored. And I have to admit that the Performance Center model does look pretty cool.

The down side is that I'm betting I'd still end up with an Apex kit and trigger. Still, a cool new toy....

Looks like a great improvement to an already excellent gun.

Will it be available without the safety?

Looks like it got the tarted up Tijuana Buick treatment. Three portholes? Really? Red and green plastic sights? Has the G43 eaten into the Shields market share this badly?

I think the three ports in the slide are carrying on the family tradition for the Performance Center. Their other M&Ps have three slide ports, as do the 1911s, and I don't think the commander version even has a ported barrel. Looks great though.

The sights are tacky though.

The Shield doesn't need a safety, but the safety that comes on them isn't intrusive. It is small and flat enough that it won't be engaged inadvertently, and though I disengage it when holstered, there are times it is sort of nice to be able to flip it on. If it worries anyone, a drop of super glue should assure it won't be accidentally engaged.

I'm wondering how much, if any, velocity will be lost due to the porting. That could affect performance of SD loads.

I view this as a marketing deal. Why would they go from the ported full size to a ported Shield and not make a ported Compact if there was any actual benefit to the porting. This reminds me of Crocodile Dundee,

Porting????

This is porting!

Should call this one the Dragon! When I was standing at the gun counter at Academy looking for my first gun I would have bought this one! Heck, the flames alone would scare the BGs away.

Almost I have bought and sold two 43s in order to come home to the Shield. I only wish the V-Tac I purchased had the same grip angle and trigger my Shield does.

Default PC Shield

This sounds interesting, a ported Shield with possibly improved trigger and sear, looking forward to seeing one and reading some reviews, maybe a future replacement for my CS9 Chiefs Special.

I agree. A ported barrel for a pocket carry Shield that's dumb.
And the sights aren't as good as traditional 3 dot. This was not a well though out enhancement. The Shield as is is near perfect CC firearm... That Smith felt that need to exploit the great sales numbers. They blew it on this PC model.

Guys... I see this version of the Shield as being 100% a product of the marketing department. It looks like a fun gun to shoot. Nothing more, nothing less. I certainly don't see it as a gun to use for serious business.

I see a lot of talk but has anyone shoot one yet?

I'm a Shield fan (I have three, all 9mm).

I bought a 9mm shield with safety when the first came out. I had been looking for one for sometime. Finally got it in, took it to the range (wife went with me, mistake).

Wife says let me see that, shoots it and says ahh honey thank you, I will love carrying this. (note to self, wife does not got to the range when I have a new pistol).

My two other carry shields have Trijicon HDs (yellow front), Apex setups and Crimson Trace Green Lasers, great carry gun. I do take off the plastic moveable addition on the 8 round mags. I found out they move at just the wrong time when trying quick reloads.

Wanting to see if anyone has fired the new Performance Shields and what there thoughts are on it?

There are several Youtube videos already up on this model if interested.

Also have you seen one for sale? Cost?
