cerakote, the saga continues
If any of you have followed my posts youll remember i took a little time off work to learn to apply cerakote. i didnt get any formal training just learned it on my own. if you go looking online or on youtube you wont find much in the line of howtoo instruction or step by step, ive completed 6 guns now and have a pretty good handle on it. my latest is my first multi layer cerakote with a pattern/camo. its a m1911 a1 compact 45. the colors i chose were armor black, mil spec o.d. green and magpul stealth grey, the camo style vietnam tiger stripe. im sure itll turn heads at the range.

That is a really nice looking pistol. Did you learn to cerakote for business purposes or just to do your personal guns?

That looks real nice, great job! I've thought about cerakoting a gun, but have been reluctant because I'm not sure how durable it would be long-term. Have you seen how well a properly applied coating lasts? I'd hate to do a gun, only to have it chip/peel, look bad...
Have you looked into other coatings (Ionbond..?)?

cerakote is like 10 times harder and wear resistant than any known finish.

Been thinking of learning how to Cerakote myself but the biggest thing I am worried about is the prep work of having the old finish stripped from the gun. Do you remove the finish yourself or have someone do that? How hard of a process is that on its own?
Really like the gun by the way.

you sand blast it with 120 grit aluminum oxide, which isnt hard, just a lil time consuming, when folks say cerakote is 90 percent prep, 10 percent spraying thier not lying, i spent more time prepping than anything but im single have time on my hands and find the work rewarding.

You are absolutely correct with that statement. Preparation is the key, to include complete disassembly. I've had a local gunsmith cerakote numerous firearms, to include two M&P slides. He shared horror stories of people bringing in firearms they had cerakoted at a bargain basement price. Seems some of these so called cerakoters didn't bother to completely disassemble the firearm and simply sprayed and baked. Well, prolonged heat and springs don't mix. Simply saying, you typically get what you pay for.

Ron,you need a lanyard on that camo'd piece. If you ever drop it in the woods you would have a hard time finding it! Nice job! Nick
