Default Newbie with newbie question

Getting a shield for Christmas, after much research, I decided on the shield over the XDS. Went to a gun range and rented both, and really liked the Shield over the XDS. My question has probably been asked numerous times, but I want to know what kind of ammunition you guys use when you carry your shield concealed, and for home protection use. There seems to be quite a few opinions on this, and just wanted your opinions....

Congrats on the shield. I purchased a new one about two weeks ago and am finally heading to the range tomorrow to break it in. I to would like to go with the federal hst and the speer gold dots as they seem to be talked about the most on anything you google about self defense loads. I have cabelas, gander mountain and a major gun center near me and none of them carry these. I ended up settling for 124 gr. Hydroshocks and critical duty for now. As we speak i am searching online but every place i go seems to say out of stock on the gold dots. Anyone know of a good site that usually has the hst and gold dots in stock?

Welcome.

I'd carry anything on Doc Roberts duty ammunition list:

https://pistol-forum.com/showthread....f-Defense-Ammo

For me, it's Speer Gold Dot 124 JHP.

I bought my last 200 rounds of Speer GD at

SGAmmo.com | Family Owned and Operated Ammo Sales, Stillwater OK

Edit: They have 100 boxes of 124 standard pressure at the moment, $23.95 per box of 50.

50 round box - 9mm Speer Gold Dot 124 grain Standard Pressure LE Hollow Point Ammo 53618 | SGAmmo.com

Really? One for summer and one for winter? What about fall and spring?

Congratulations.!

I bought a Shield 9 today as well. My original plan was to pick up a new Shield for my birthday next month, but I advanced that plan a month.

I carry 40SW/165gr Hornady Critical Defense in my full size M&P 40. I'm planning to get 9mm/115gr Hornady Critical Defense for my Shield.

My philosophy is to keep self defense ammo simple; therefore I stay away from heavy and/or hot rounds, especially for a light weight and short barreled handgun.

Yessir; after that, you have to change to Black Talons.

Before asking "What ammo should I use?" you should ask "What should ammo do, what shouldn't it do, and how is it tested?" I recommend the following:
Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness from the Firearms Training Unit of the FBI
Basic Wound Ballistic Terminal Performance Facts by Dr. Roberts (DocGKR)
Ordnance gelatin test assessment for rifle and pistol calibers by Dr. Roberts (DocGKR)
What's Wrong With The Wound Ballistics Literature And Why by Dr. Fackler

For specific recommendations I start here:
Service Caliber Handgun Duty and Self-Defense Ammo by Dr. Roberts (DocGKR)
Then here:
9mm Ammo Quest on Youtube by ShootingTheBull410

I chose Federal HST in 147 grain standard pressure (P9HST2), but it can be difficult to find.

Been thinking of getting a 9mm myself and this old thread was revived recently and might have something useful.

9mm 115 Gr. vs 124 Gr. vs 147 Gr.

Hornady Critical Defense is my current favorite, but you're talking to a guy who may or may not have a fairly significant stockpile of Winchester Black Talon, although I'm still trying to find it after the boat accident last year.
