Default police trade in?

If it is not marked is there any way to tell if a used MP40 that I just purchased was a police trade in?

Probably not. Maybe by s# if you contact S&W but I don't think they'll just have that info at hand

If S&W shipped it to a law enforcement agency they would have a record of that. Call S&W with your serial number and they can tell you if it shipped to a distributor or a LEA.
My question is what difference does it make?

The only reason I would care if it was a police trade in was if it was beat hard and put up dirty.
Some police issued guns do actually have the police department stamped or engraved on the gun. Maybe not so much now as used to happen.

But you wouldn't know that based on the S#.

I have yet to see a truely used police gun. Most have surface wear and that about it.

I have two of them from Buds I got from Lexington they both looked better than most used guns you see out there. The take down lever had very little ware on it both night sights still work. Three magazines with each. The price in the store you just can't say no.

I have, several years ago I bought a LE trade in M&P 9L from Bud's that was supposed to be in excellent condition, and all the reviews said so, but I must have gotten the one bad apple. It had the most external and internal wear of any M&P that I have seen to date.
To Bud's credit, they let me return it, they even prepaid the return frieght.

And some LEO trade-ins are still NIB, unissued.
Like this M&P Compact 3357 from Summit Gunbroker:

S&W even gave me the "Nation's Finest" rebate on it.

Buds had some NIB police trade ins a while back .. haven't been on their site in a few weeks they still may have some .. but by the comments most people seemed pleased ..

most of their used police trade ins are stamped in some way with either the police force abbreviations or a serial number of some kind ..

Think they can be some nice knock around pistols that your not worried about keeping pristine .. nice truck guns ..

I've thought about getting a used 40c and putting a 357 sig drop in barrel in it .. and just turning it into a 357sig "C"

Buds has some unissued Detroit PD trade in M&P 40 FS with night sights and 3 mags

https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...lice+Trade-Ins

They had some some unissued Detroit PD trade in M&P 40 Compacts with night sights and 3 mags that they must of just sold out of. I saw them on there within the last few days. I bought one last month and I'm very happy with it.
