Thumbs up New M&P Bodyguard review

Picked up a new Bodyguard the other day after renting one at the range. Took it to the range after cleaning and measuring the trigger pull (9 to 10 pounds).
Shot 50 Remington and 50 Blazer brass thru it before testing the mags with Hornady XTP HP. I like the Critical Defense for my 9MM, but saw reviews on theXTP being better for 380's.
My wife had a couple of FTF but may be due to her hand getting tired. I didn't have any issues.
No light strikes!!
Very easy to stage the trigger for better groupings.
Yes, long trigger pull, but very manageable with practice.
The hollow points all fed and shot flawlessly.
I stagger the HP and round ball in all of the mags to make sure they feed OK. In addition, I put one in the chamber in order to test a full mag. Then, I load up my main mag with all HP.
Hope to get to the range again today.
Thinking about a Pachmayr grip....anybody have feedback on this grip or the Hogue for the bodyguard???

I bought one. Dry fired it, the trigger was abysmal. Also the first gun I ever owned where I had to depress the magazine release to insert a magazine. I traded it off without ever firing it. Bought a Ruger Custom LCP, am very happy with it.

I got the Pachmayr grip for mine (the updated version without the hole for the finger groove) but it was so snug that it would depress my CT LaserGuard button. So i marked where the button was, and punched a perfect small hole.

Unfortunately, i didnt take into account that hole would stretch once on the gun, so i essentially made it like the original version and it would ride down after multiple shots.

I also bought the Galloway traction grips and those also need to be modified as the grip is designed for laserguard-less guns. My laser makes the overall grip too wide so i had cut the band on the front. This grip however is pretty good except there isnt any coverage on the backstrap.

I ordered a 5x8 sheet of Brooks Tactical AGrip! (since they dont currently offer an option for the BG380) and will make a custom one for it. I've been runing AGrip on my Kahr PM9 for a year and a half and the stuff is fantastic. If you are planing on carrying this (which in assuming you are) dont rule out AGrip.

I purchased my M&P (no laser) .380 last Feb. and put a Hogue rubber grip sleeve on it and it fills my XLG hands perfectly. Aside from that I painted the front sight with white appliance touch-up and it has put 800 + rounds of FMJ & HP rounds down range absent a single failure. I even staggered FMJ & HP in the same mag to cause a failure, but it worked fine.

It has become my EDC after 40 + yrs. of carrying a J frame. I'm using HPR 90 grain HP standard pressure for carry.

My BG has become every day carry. The trigger pull is between 7.5 to 8.5# using Lyman Trigger tester. My newer Bodyguard tests at 8.5-9.5# so am assuming yours will get a little easier with more shooting. I really believe the Bodyguard is the best small pocket carry gun available...certainly the safest [if there is such thing as a safe pistol].

Good luck with your new gun.

Forgot to mention that I have the Talon grip overlays on mine and they have been 100%. Have the Talons on 4-5 other pistols and can vouch for them. Am carrying mostly Federal HST 99 grain. some ammo tests have been a little critical of this ammo...doesn't seem to penetrate the full 12" that tester requires. Not a concern to me.

KSDeputy, I dry fired the LCP Custom and regular. Both felt horrible to me! Something about it hurt the palm of my hand. Guess it comes to differences in hand size. Plus, for a pocket gun I really wanted a safety. Well, actually, all of my guns have safeties. What I grew up shooting.
I did pick up a Pachmayr grip today. Not sure if I like it or not. Will try it at the range to see.

I've had no failures with my BG and carry it a lot. Haven't decided on doing anything with the grip yet.I also painted my front sight with white appliance touch-up paint, and it really helped.

What type of pocket holster is that? I'm looking for a leather pocket holster with a hook for my BG 380. The Desantis Nemesis is just too loose for me.

As for the press the mag release to insert a mag issue, mine has it. S&W says it's normal. Some guys just ram it in, but for shooting at the range, I see no issue with it. I never forsee having to do an emergency reload with this gun, but if I do, I'll just slap it in. Having to do that in that extremely unlikely scenario isn't gonna matter to me or even be noticed. I have a Ruger SR9 and an LC9-S, so I like Ruger, but the minor inconvenience of the mag issue was nothing compared to the LCP's awful sights, no manual safety, and not locking back on an empty mag.

As for the heavy trigger on the BG, it's a pocket gun. At 10 yards I kept them in a group the size of a small plate. Head shots were easy, too. So I'm OK with it.

I like Ruger too!! Have a carbine that was made here in NC! Had a LC9 until I shot a Shield.....
I also had some bright green and orange paint here from when I painted my 5906 sights, so did the same to the BG380. Big difference being able to see the sights!!

I had an LC9 too, and then I got a Shield. When the LC9-S came out the Shield was sold. Smaller, lighter, and much better trigger. I also like the mag disconnect.

Default S&W Bodyguard 380 w/o laser

I bought a bodyguard for my wife to use. She couldn't handle the strong slide pull. It is a S/N kevxxxx. The trigger stacked and was rough. I had to send my bodyguard to Galloway Precision to finish the installation of their trigger kit as I could not budge the rear sight (has to be removed to install the kit). Just got it back. It is great. The kit decreased the trigger pull stroke by about 50%. It is still a double action pull but not stacking and smooth, breaks like glass. A couple of patches of grip tape made it easier for me to pull the slide - so it is my gun now. Ran 200 rounds thru it today including ball, truncated ball full metal jacket, and Sig Sauer jacketed hollow points - no problems at all with 3 different magazines. Just have to get the wife a comparable for her to carry.

I bought the first Bodyguard when it came out, with the Insight Laser and safety. Added a pachmayer grip to it (put a drop of super glue under it at the BOTTOM of the front strap and the TOP of the backstrap to prevent it from moving) and have loved it ever since.
I carry Critical Defense in it with a magazine of gold dots as a spare. I keep a few boxes of Winchester PDX1, Winchester Defend, Federal Hyda shock, and Sigs Crown V on hand, you know...just in case!

Look at the Glock 42. My wife loves hers.

I recently bought a new BG with no laser and no thumb safety. I ran through ball point with no issues then my PD hollow points with no issues either. Took a few shots to figure out my grip and trigger pull but after that I was very accurate. It has become my EDC as of late, I feel a lot more confident with it over a j-frame.

I just bought one last week. I just took it to the range today and ran a box of Fiochi through it and 12 Federal Hydra Shock. It ran flawlessly. I was looking for a steel frame but when I handled this pistol I really liked the quality of the polymer. It seems indestructible. I had the problem of having to depress the mag release when I first got it but it went away after around 30 rounds. The trigger seemed to get lighter also, unless I just got used to it. After reading a bunch of bad reviews I was worried about double strikes among other issues. It's a nice pistol at a reasonable price point. I really like how it fits in my pocket over my 642.
