did you buy it used? if you have the test fire casing that would be very close to the Manufacture date.

There is no box or docs. Some of these guns are marked "stainless" on the slide and some aren't. Why are some stamped and some not?

Simply a production run change. The slides are still stainless steel, they're simply not run through the stamping step as a cost/time-saving measure as demand has been high.
Call S&W and they can tell you the build date on your piece.
