Default M&P9 recoil spring guide rod

My guide rod will not stay seated within the barrel. I can reposition it and rack the slide one time and it comes back up. Just the edge of the guide rod is in contact of the barrel. Waiting for a response from S&W just curious if anyone has had a similar issue.

Take your frame and turn the take down lever to its assembled position. Now take your slide/barrel/RSA and hold it next to the frame so its positioned as if it were assembled. You can now see where your guide rod rests during operation.

When you install your RSA in your slide its naturally positioned up against the barrel. Once the pistol is assembled and cycled the RSA drops slightly into its operational position.

I don't believe your pistol has a problem. My pistols look the same as your illustration.

I do believe you are correct! I have never had a pistol that has done this. Every other pistol I've owned it has stayed in the fully seated position even during take down. Thank you for the info, I didn't think there was any major concerns as I haven't had a single issue with this with 1000 rounds or so. This is my EDC so I needed to be sure. Thank you

Update: S&W responded and with the same info I addressed here with picture they are sending out a new spring. They did state they don't typically fit tight but to try the new one. So far I'd give S&W an A+ on service.

Most welcome. Glad to be of help. Nice to hear that S&W is sending you an RSA, good to have a spare and kudos to them for doing so.

Like mentioned above there is nothing wrong with it that's the normal position once you rack the slide, this happens on most guns.

I do have some kind of a annoying issue, why every time I'm going to remove the slide off the frame, I have to push the guide rod up so the take down lever stays in straight down position?

They all do that. Also, remember the RSA doesn't operate by pressing against the barrel. It presses against the take down pin. So, moving down like this is a good thing. It only seats against the barrel like that so the slide can be removed.

When the slide is back, the barrel is loose in the gun. Check it and see.

It wasn't a question of the barrel, as I had commented the question was is this normal for the RSA to not be seated during take down. And the answer was yes. I have owned numerous pistols but never one with this type of take down lever, the take down lever actually pulls the RSA out of position when it's rotated. When the take down lever is again rotated upwards the RSA is fully seated onto the barrel, it has the flat edge which catches the spring thus pulling down.
