Thanks for the reply!
I checked that they were the same size before hand but forgot to mention that, that would be why Wolff only sells 1 size .
As for the pictures I usually do that but of course I didn't this time as I didn't think I would need to (dumb). I think put them in the correct way but just wondering if maybe they were in backwards to begin with...

Didn't even think to check the manual, thanks for doing that for me. Yup I had it right... Man these are some bad springs. Both springs within 2 days of each other... tempted by the Wolff but I hate that i have to spend another $20 to get my firearm working the way it should from the factory... Maybe I will see if I can get S&W to pay for them
P.S. I already called for the 1st spring which they said they would replace so I will call for the other

The seven and eight round mags use the exact same spring. S&W sent me two springs. One for my seven that bent and one for my eight that is starting to show signs of bending. The two new springs came packed in one plastic bag and are identical. Meanwhile, I bought new springs for ALL my Shield mags from Wolff gun springs and installed them, keeping the original springs that still look good as spares. I don't trust the new springs that S&W sent me for anything other than spares. I'll keep the Wolff springs in the mags (fully loaded) and inspect them weekly. The hope is that the Wolff springs will not fail like the original springs.

Just chiming in. Had the same issue happen to me today. Bought the pistol last week, first range trip today. Happened w/ the 8rd mag after the 3rd reload. (See pic attached)
Spoke to S&W customer service via chat on their webpage and they're sending me 4 new springs. Lets see how it goes...

Ok want to solve the junk springs? Buy Wolff springs ! My new 9mm shield had failed bent spring after 125 shots ! Goggled to see if any problems ! Guess what lol many many. I was a gunsmith for 15 years and a machinist and these springs are dead soft junk. In a life protecting gun? Smith you need a big lawsuit ! Ok I called Smith Perf Center . Mine is a Perf Center . They said I'll send you 2! If it fails quickly it is bad ! Uhh ok Beavis no **** ! Ok my Wolff are flawless and Smiths new ones czme !! They are straight with no neck down. Also a hook on top and bottom that pushes it out to far in follower to drag on inside of mag ! NICE ! The call these jerks engineers ! I love my Perf 9 and it is flawless after I polished the scratches and tool marks out of chamber ! So if you life is at stack USE WOLFF !

There's definitely a lack of spring in these defective springs. The steel bends way too easily by hand (especially where they taper down). The Wolff springs I received have a better appearance to them and after being fully compressed for the last couple of weeks don't appear any different visually than they did the day I put them in the mags. Time will tell but I'm sticking with the Wolff springs in all my Shield mags and saving the replacements S&W sent me as spares. This spring issue is troublesome to say the least.

So, it appears even newly purchased Shields are having this issue. If this is the case, the replacement springs are not trustworthy either.

So I just had this problem with one of my Shield 9 mags. Looked the same as most of the pictures I've seen with the spring bent at a 90 degree angle. I have MagGuts zee springs in 4 of my mags, and I think I'm going to put them in the other 3.

OMG! Just bought mine a few days ago and Gun was made this June! I wont get Magguts since they have tons of issues (do a search) but will get Wolf springs but S&W should have fixed this known issue long ago!

I am very upset that I had never heard of this issue except by accident here and from what I can find out is that this issue exists still with the "New" springs in the mew made guns!
Seems S&W should have done a Recall or Upgrade (which is what some comp. call a Recall) a long time ago!
The springs seem to be an "Accident waiting to Happen", really sad & dangerous!

Got my 3 Wolf +5% replacement springs for the Shield Pistol mags, so that is 1 potential dangerous issue I wont have to "Worry" about!
These are the same length but are a little darker in finish and to me at least they are slightly thicker, and loading mags I can tell these are a little harder to load!
I still cant find any answers if S&W ever did fix this issue, but heard they did do something to newer mags/guns but it still hasn't solved the issue, but from what I read and pictures I saw I do believe my gun made 2 months ago has the newer version of the S&W mag springs?

I got my first collapsed spring last week. Mag Guts apparently aren't the answer for me. I had 3 failures to feed in the past week, all with the next round nose down still in the magazine. I've checked multiple sources to make sure they're installed correctly.
Anyway, I ordered two 3-paks of Wolff springs last night.

Maybe the point where they both bent and stayed bent was where they were hung while being dunked in the liquid salt bath and didn't get tempered at that point.

This is not an isolated problem. I love my Shield, and this has not happened to me. But I have read of several instances of this happening. Maybe S&W has more than one vendor for these springs.. I do think S&W should look into it, though.

Got my Shield about 2 weeks ago gun was made in july, 2017 and has the newer springs, found out on here by accident about the spring issue, did research and it has been happ since 2012 S&W will sent new springs which have same issue.
Seems in late 2015 S&W did try to fix issue with newer springs which had different color, but it is still happ so there is no Fix except to get Wolff springs.
My Wolffs look darker and to me a little thicker and are harder to load since they are 5% stronger, not cheap but worth every $$!
So the NO 1 seliing sub-compact in the country has spring issues and S&W cant fix this issue!
I checked out the Magguts but there are as many or more issues than with the S&W springs, these have only been around a short time but due to issues Magguts had to come out with the 2nd Gen which still have issues.
Strange the Shield uses same spring for 7 and 8 round mags, but that shows it is fine to load my 2.0 to 18 rounds instead of 17!

I have attached a pic of the first spring.
Has anyone had this problem before? Is there a QC issue? Any recommendations for aftermarket springs that don't fail?

I have exactly the same issue with my new shield! Contacted customer service and they are sending me two new springs. My question is, what’s gonna prevent the same thing from happening?

Wolff springs!
S&W has not been able to fix this issue and don't think they can!

After putting it off for a couple years, I just replaced 3 Shield mag springs with Wolff springs.
2 of the 3 mags had been fully loaded for some time, and the springs showed no signs of deformation, but given that this pistol is strictly a SD/carry piece rather than a target/range toy, I feel much better having resolved any potential issue with the mag springs.
I ordered directly from Wollf/Gunsprings, and their 3-pack of springs fits both the 7 and 8 rd mags, and only cost about $21, delivered (which I guess is pretty painless, even for something i shouldn't have had to pay for in the first place .)

I was going to be over by the range anyway today so I put a couple o' boxes of 9mm in the car and pushed my May 2017 Shield over 1000 w/ zero malfs. When cleaning it a couple hours ago I noticed the the mag followers were filthy so I decided to clean them.
When I popped the baseplate on my carry 7 rounder, the spring didn't just slide out, I had to pull it screechingly out. It was bent to about 25° from straight at the transition where the coils get smaller.
I thought: "Oh, that akdude guy was right."
I think I'll call S&W CS Monday and ask them which after-market magazine springs they recommend.

Why waste ur time to call S&W, they changed the springs 2X and last time was late 2016 and all they can do is replace some bad springs with more bad springs!
If I had known about the spring issues and the spring in frame jumping out then I don't know if I had bought 1 even with rebate!
Well the mag spring issue is now fixed with Wolff springs!

lol, I have 2 shields, so the 2 seven rounders and 2 8 rounders that it came with. + I got 16 of the 8 rounders when one of the retailers had them for $9.99 a few months back.
you don't even WANT to know the numbers for my AK and AR mags I have stashed away (the wife would murder me if she ever opens those two big boxes in the back of the closet I taped up )
