The Ameriglo I-dot Pro sights seem to be quite popular. I bought into them and purchased a set for my full size as well as my Shield.
Bottom line: I don't like them. Neither does my wife.
The front sight has to be buried into the rear in order to shoot straight. Most pictures of the Ameriglo I-dot sight picture look like this:
The sights are close to the camera, so everything appears nice. The fact is, once you start using them at arms length, the sights appear more like this:
(I realize this may not be exact. This is just a quick representation of the issue)
That front sight has to be buried into the rear sight to get them flat across the top. Otherwise, if you put the complete circle in the rear sight, it shoots high. This does not bode well for quick sight acquisition.
I only recently realized how irritating these sights are when I started to shoot a local Steel Challenge. After two matches, I'm fed up with them. I'm better off with the stock three-dot sights than this goofy, cut-off-front-sight stuff.
I took measurements of the sights with my digital calipers (both the Shield and Full-Size). Both front and rear Ameriglo sights are the same height as their OEM counterparts. The only difference is the depth of the rear sight notch. The Ameriglo rear sight on both the Shield and the Full-Size is significantly more shallow than the OEM sights (I don't have the measurements in front of me at the moment, but I will add them).
I foolishly purchased the Ameriglo Three-Dot Classic in an effort to resolve my issue with the I-dots, but the rear sight on those is similarly shallow. It's a slight improvement because of the smaller front dot, but still unsatisfactory.
I think my solution to this is going to be pairing the OEM rear sight with the Ameriglo front sight. I like the big, lime-green dot and the tritium for low-light. I don't think tritium in the rear sight is really necessary and the OEM rear sight provides a deeper notch which should facilitate a clearer sight picture, utilizing the entire front dot. I'm not sure about the two white dots on the rear, though. I may fill those in with a sharpie or something.
Pairing the Ameriglo front sight alone (SW-212-230-G) with the OEM rear sight could be a very cost-effective solution for those wanting to upgrade their sights on the cheap, since they can be had for less than $60.
Just wanted to share my experience with these sights for those who have them or are thinking about getting Ameriglo sights for their M&Ps.
Has anyone had a similar experience with Ameriglo? Thoughts? Solutions?
