Is it new or used? If the owners manual came with it, did you read it and do what it suggested prior to trying to shoot it? (Hint: you're supposed to clean and lube it prior to trying to shoot it.)
I rather get the impression you're new to firearms. If the owners manual didn't come with it, you can download it from the S&W website. Read through it with the UNLOADED firearm available to look at and see if you can figure out what the problem might be. The pistol does come with a lifetime warranty, but you need to make sure the issue(s) aren't operator error first.
The NRA website can also help you find certified instructors in your area.

I guess it's used, since it came from pawnshop. I'd give it a good cleaning before anything else. If you didn't get users manual with your purchase you can download one from S&W site .

I agree with RGVShooter, clean it before you go any further and you will likely be back in business. If that doesn't work check your ammo. Some can be a little tweaky about what rounds they like (mine eats CCI MiniMag all day long but gets mucked up quickly with Remington Thunderbolt and I get anything from a FTF or jams). If that doesn't cure it and you aren't comfortable working on it, take it to a local smith and have them give it a once over for you.

Bring that loaded thing back to the pawn shop. Wave it around in the air so they can see you are in need of assistance. (Just kidding. Don't.)
Agree with the advice about cleaning it. Also, what does the ammo that didn't fire look like? Are there any indentations on the backside of it?
