Contact customer service for a call tag. They will take a look at it and maybe replace it.

Yeah. I know. I just got a new replacement for my 317. It's a pita though.

I wonder what caused the stress on the front roll pin area.

I really like the modular system that the Sig 320 has. The trigger housing is the frame. The plastic grip can be replaced for 35 bucks.

Just wondering what could have caused this ?
Quick questions: what ammo, and if were aftermarket parts used?

Cor-Bon DPX. Nothing aftermarket in that part but the trigger return spring.

Yeah, that's gotta be a hair because it cuts across the center of the roll pin, and into the shadow on the edge of the slide. I can see the actual crack, but the pic could use come better lighting.
I would imagine S&W will take care of this, chop-chop, right?
BTW, the slide finish looks unusual, more like a grey parkerizing. What's up with that?

It looks like you've updated with a lot of aftermarket modifications such as a different trigger, stippling, and a refinished slide.
I'm not criticizing, but I hope that S&W doesn't try to blame the crack in the frame on any of your modifications, especially the installation of the new trigger.

What crack are you talking about? The long sweeping line that starts on the slide and sweeps down and stops under the middle of the take-down lever, or are you talking about what looks to be a crack coming straight down from the roll pin?

In either case, neither look to be cracks to me.

The long sweeping line starts on the slide and ends under the take-down lever looks like a hair as others have mentioned and I don't know how both the slide and frame could have become cracked so uniformly without showing other signs of failure.

The line straight down from the center of the roll pin hole is part of the contour of the frame. My 40c is identical.

Either way it should be very easy to verify if one or the other is a crack. Assure your pistol is empty then take a small flat-blade screwdriver and insert it between the dust shield and the slide and gently pry it down...if there is a crack in the area you are saying there is, flexing the dust cover should open it up fairly easily.

Sure enough. Search around for random 40c pics and they all seem to have the same crack ...

Do you mean the vertical line through the roll pin hole? This thumbnail was cropped from the S&W web site, sure looks like what you are worried about on your gun!

That's not a crack. It's the way the plastic is molded. Look closer with a bright light. The 9c looks exactly the same.

If you're referring to the wide, flared part of the frame molding where the locking block pin is in the frame, that's a deliberate design. The "recessed" area of the frame to the rear of the pin is needed for the takedown lever to have clearance for its rotation. The locking block frame pin "bisects" the offset in the frame on the left side.

The left end of the locking block pin ought to protrude from the left side of the frame a little more than on the right side so the end of the pin is level with the wider, forward flared outside of the frame. It acts as a "stop" for the takedown lever when it's rotated down and forward for field-stripping, to help prevent "exuberant" rotation of the lever from letting it hit and mark the frame.

This offset of the outside of the M&P frame at that spot on the left side was initially (mistakenly) thought to be a defect/frame crack when the M&P's were first introduced 10 years ago. It wasn't until the guns were getting to be in common circulation that the mistaken internet rumor was put to rest.

Still, someone new to the M&P pistols could easily think the offset, flared spot of the frame looked weird on the left side.

OP - if possible, could you get a better photo of the area you are talking about?

I enlarged your photo but I can't see any crack anywhere.

That is NOT a crack! That's the way it is made. Look at any other M&P compact model and you will see that is normal.

After checking my 40C, to me it looks perfectly normal. Not counting what appears to be a hair in the picture, the vertical line that I think you are referring to is just part of the relief molded into the frame for clearance when rotating the take down lever. Here's a picture of mine for comparison.

When this thread showed up I thought, Oh man! that guy's frame cracked.

After a couple posts by other 40c owners and looking at other photos on the net of 40c's, don't think so. Seems they all look like that. Just the contour of the frame.

Sorry, but I'm calling bull****, fellas !! I just checked mine, in good light, with reading glasses and a jumbo magnifying glass, and I ain't seeing nothing even close to that crack that runs south of the pin in the photo. I'm talking.....ZERO !!!
Unless there are different frame generations that have some little ridge just below the pin, that are emulating a crack under certain lighting, the OP's pistol CLEARLY has a crack developing.

I briefly freaked out when putting in an Apex trigger kit looking at the same thing... I thought the frame had cracked when I was driving the pin out.

It was a great relief when I looked closer.

It's not a crack as others have stated.... Just because yours doesn't have it, doesn't mean every other person who has stated theirs does, has a crack. It's CLEARLY not a crack.

Default M&P Productive Line

Hard to believe, but I've owned fired M&P .45 full size and Compact, and 9mm full size and compacts for years. Thoroughly cleaned each after range day. After buying a new bench light I saw the suspect line at the roll pin, just forward of the takedown. Panicing, I fired an email to S&W Support. They responded immediately - "Send it back, we'll take a look".
After reading the similar Posts here, I examined my .45FS, .45C, 9mmFS and found they have the same line. Clearly identical line that are part of production, not a Crack. Faith in the M&P restored, Faith in S&W never questioned.

Default More - photos of 4 different M&P's

Four M&P's
Top 2, 9C, 9 FS
Bottom 2, 45C, 45 FS (note forward .45 only scallops)

Identical vertical line on each from roll pin forward of take down. It's a production design line. My faith in S&W is constant.
