Default M&P9 Pro Series Trigger Disappointment

New to the forum and I'm guessing this topic has been covered but couldn't find anything (recent anyway) after a quick search. Purchased a Performance Center Ported 9mm several months ago and really enjoy shooting it. I think the stock trigger is certainly decent (trigger pull of around 5 lbs.). Decided to get the Pro Series model to shoot Production in USPSA (ported barrel on the Performance Center model would put me in Open where I would definitely not belong). I picked up the Pro Series 9mm yesterday and the trigger which is advertised by S&W as "4-5-1/2 lb. Smooth Trigger Pull" is terrible. It is gritty and trigger pull measures about 7-1/2 lbs. Based on some quick Google research, this does not appear to be an isolated occurrence. I know I could send it back to S&W but also know it will take weeks to get it back. Like many other customers (a/k/a suckers), I am probably going to just pay for a trigger job which I could have just done with a non "Pro Series" gun. Just feeling more than a bit disappointed in S&W. And please don't tell me to shoot the pistol and see if it gets better. First, it's not going to get that much better regardless of how much I shoot it. Second, and more to the point, why does S&W make such claims and then produce an inferior product?

Sorry to hear it. Mistakes happen with any brand/model from time to time. Have you called S&W to discuss?
FWIW, my 9pro had a decent trigger out of the box. As I recall, it measured at a pretty crisp and consistent 4.75#. It was good enough where I didn't install an Apex sear (which near all the rest of my M&Ps have.) . I still run it that way today.
p.s. Not sure what the price delta of a pro vs 9L is these days but I think the Pro's sights are a big step up regardless.

Have you tried checking out Apex Trigger Kit? Also for more capacity check out Magguts.

Sorry to hear that. My Pro's have all been great (although I don't have a trigger gauge) out of the box. I will add, that the more you shoot them (including dry-fire), the better they get.

Default Apex Website

Have you tried to shop on their website? My god what an aggravation. So many items that are not grouped well then trying to figure out what comes with what kit...then to top it off they have several kits with very similar names.
I was going to make a purchase for a group of us (6 people) that wanted different things for our M&P's. Took me hours to figure out what was needed to order then I got wrapped up with something else for a few days. When I came back I couldn't remember some of the stuff I researched so I gave up.
When I have a day to blow again I will have to go back on and try again.

zigbert it is not that hard, there are a lot of parts listed but they can be sorted out. Also you can call their customer service they are very helpfull, they helped me a lot even emailed me pics and recommendations.

I'm very please with my Pro series the trigger feels much better out of the box compared with my Full size 9 and compact.

Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Actually, even though I guess you don't want to hear it, the trigger will get better with use. At least mine did, it smoothed out and got a little lighter after some regular range use.

I can't remember what it started out at, but I think it might have been around 6 lbs. Now it comes in between 4.5 and 5 lbs. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I do like the pistol and the FO site is nice. Was just disappointed when the trigger was so different from the Performance Center 9mm. I will shoot it and dry fire it and hope that will help some, at least until I decide what direction to go with the trigger.

Yes, the trigger on the CORE is junk.
All the CORE's I dry fired at dealer were as you described.
My friend did the same and encountered the same issue.
Both of us put Apex triggers on our pistols.

I recently bought the CORE Ported for my wife and it was much better out of the box, plus it has an overtravel adjustment.

My Pro had an acceptable trigger, and since it was my carry gun for so long I didn't perform any alterations.

Both my Pros were pretty gritty to start, and most of it was the striker block and SB channel, which is not tough to correct. Both settled down under 4.5# and smooth.
APEX sells a USB if you don't want to polish it yourself. (Legal in Productiion)

The triggers on the Pros and CORE are identical except for the overtravel screw, and individual variations are what you hear about, not design differences. Basically the PC is the same trigger massaged a bit.

Our M&P guru here does a trigger smoothing that is superior to any of the APEX kits, and it is all stock parts with custom work. Don't panic and think you have to buy a big box of parts.

P.S. There was one fellow that got a Pro with an abnormally heavy trigger, and it turned out it had the wrong trigger in it. S&W reworked it for him, but of course he did have to get a free call tag and ship it back.

If you or a friend are handy enough, follow these instructions for a real nice trigger:

Default Send it back...

I have two M&Ps that improved with shooting, but I don't think the trigger will improve from "terrible" to acceptable for you.

Warrantee returns just take a couple of weeks, so I would try that first.

I expect S&W will improve your trigger. Apex parts are a solution, but S&W might get you where you want to be without additional expense.

+1! I did the Burwell trigger job on one of my M&P's a few years ago and it works fine. Not as good as an Apex Kit, but better than stock!

After 3000 rounds the trigger on my MP40 pro series is smooth as silk and breaks at just over 4lbs. Love it.

I decided this past Thursday to send it to Dan and sent an email to schedule an appointment. I know I could send it back to S&W but would probably still end up sending to Burwell's anyway, so just skip the step in the middle.

Received my gun back from Dan Burwell and have run several hundred rounds through it. The trigger job is phenomenal. Thanks to those on this forum for recommending him.

I picked my M&P Pro Series 9mm on 10/03/16, it was produced on 05/26/16. This gun is flawless. An out of the box trigger of 4.2#. After buying a Sigma in the early '90's with its 12+ # trigger pull I had steered away from S&W for many years. I hope S&W keeps up the good work. But the sheer number of complaints on this forum has me worried about their Q/C....

Seems S&W quality is hit or miss.

My new Pro 5" has a pull of 6½ to 7½ lbs and the trigger bar
hangs up engaging the striker block plunger like a speed bump. That's some serious grit.

Disappointing to say the least.

Default S&W customer service involved now

Well I decided to give S&W a chance to make this "Pro Series"
"competition ready" like their web site claims it is.

CS rep agreed while base M&P's do get out with sub par triggers
due to the sheer volume produced, Performance Center guns
which the Pro Series is, should not leave with bad triggers.

Sent it in this morning, I'll start a new thread and do updates
there for future members with problem guns.

My 9 Pro ( 4.25") has a noticeably lighter/better trigger than my 9c. Mine was made back in 2010 though.

IMHO, you shoulda sent a few hundred rounds down range. It gets "better" but still no where near 1911 "there".

Mine got better at about 200 or so rounds, but I am still going to stick the apex in it.
Same with the STD, not sure which one will get it first.
MY TX CCW will be in about 30 or so days, so I may just do the CORE first.

I did that with my 4.25" standard, it went from 9 lbs to 8 lbs
S&W claims 6½ lbs and a 1 pound variable more or less then spec

Every Glock, or other pistol I've bought new was within a pound
of claimed pull.

Out of the 3 M&P's bought within 2 months, all were
2 to 3 lbs over claimed pull.

That's just piss poor QC in my book.

And, when the website says specifically...............
"• 4-5½ lb. Smooth Trigger Pull"

I expect it to be at least the maximum 5½ and no grit on take up. Not the 7.0 lbs both Pros's have.

Call me crazy, but the extra cost is trigger & sights.

I wont aargue that....why I am going to order the Apex kit this week.

Here is what a poor trigger will do.

I was consistently accurately off.. about 50-60 rounds in this target. Curious as to how the Apex will do....and I have to get over the recoil anticipation.

The FSS Apex aluminum trigger kit totally changes this pistol.

I mean night & day, you won't believe the difference.

If you don't have a sight pusher,
the rear sight has to be removed to replace the striker block
..... Speed Shooter Specialties rents one cheap. $25

Search Results : Welcome to Speed Shooter Specialties

Many use a hammer & brass punch to do this, not my style so
I actually bought one from MGW, and now that I own 3 M&P's
the cost is getting spread out nicely.
