Default M&P 45 Shield Mag Issue

Yesterday I purchased a M&P 45 Shield, at the range today I found that I am unable to load more than 3 rounds into the magazine, granted my paws are not as strong as they used to be but I load many others just fine.
Can anyone recommend a device to assist me?

Yes, I had the same problem when I brought mine home also..and did not have a mag loader so through sitting at the kitchen table for about an hour loading and unloading first 3 rounds then 4 then 5 and so on the springs loosened up and became no problem at all....

Will help you to hand slap the mag's so all the rounds are seated to the rear of the mag while trying to break in....

you will get there...just keep trying one more round in at a time......

The good news is: It's not you.

Those magazine springs come pretty stiff from the factory.

Here's what I did: I loaded mine to full capacity (how I pulled that off, I'll never know) and basically let it sit overnight. Unloaded the next morning, repeated the process. Loading was noticeably easier the second time around. I'll do it once again tonight, but expect the mag to be even more broken in.

The loading/unloading process goes a long way toward loosening those new mags up.

If all else fails, I highly recommend an UpLULA.

Recently got a Shield 45, and while I can get more than 3 fairly easily, the last 2 are very tough, I hope it gets worn in and easier down the road.

Here are a couple options

I've not used this one, but it looks easy to use.

Bladetech makes an Easy Loader called the BEML (Bens Easy Magazine Loader) for a company called Ben's Outdoor Design, I've been using one for a few months and find that it works pretty well for me.

Hope this helps

Default Bens BEML Instructions

Here is how the BEML works,

Very simple, and I know it works with the 45 Shield mags, as well as many others (Third Gen 9mm, 40S&W, 45 ACP, Glock 9mm, 40 S&W, etc.)

Mine were a brute to load initially. When i got them loaded fully, just let them sit until I went to the range. 150 rounds later, all good. No problem loading them to full capacity.

I use the Maglula for just about everything............... 9mm to 45 ACP. Works very well. Most likely used it for the new 45 Shield too.

I've used a lot of different styles of magazine loaders, but I've never used one that works as well as the Maglula Universal. It's the best $40 I ever spent. It was so good, I bought a couple more so I could dedicate on to my range bag and one to my bench and another for what ever or where ever I need it. I also load my new mags to full capacity and let them sit that way for two or three days before use. During that same time, I lock the slide back on the new auto loader and leave it locked back for the same period of time. I have found that doing this sure makes things easier right off the bat and results in fewer "new gun" issues with feeding and function. With the Shields, leaving the slide locked back for a time sure makes it easier to lock back as well.

The Universal will work for both double stack and single stack mags 9MM or larger and it works a treat for the semi double stacked Shield mags as well!

I've had a 40 M&P for about a month now. My thoughts on it are that it isn't something I will keep. I can't come up with any reason why it should be so difficult to load the mags.

Yes, after a month they got easier but the last 2 rounds are ridiculous to load.

The gun is sitting in the safe and I've gone back to the GLOCK. Maybe it will get easier in another month but in my opinion I don't want a gun this difficult to load.

they get much easier as time goes by. my 9mm shield was stupid hard to load but after 3-4 range trips plus a few months with loaded mags they get easy enough to load by hand without a big deal. don't worry. it's normal

I rely on my Uplula loader for my 9's, esp my new Shield. Works great of course. But there are times i wonder if I should occasionally work on filling mags by hand in case it is ever needed in a pinch. That's not something I normally do but should make the effort to at least try sometime.

Add another vote for a UpLula. I bought mine a few days after fighting with my .45 Shield magazines. Now I wonder why I didn't buy one years ago. They make it just so darn quick and easy to load magazines, I've added a second one just in case.

I wonder what any women that bought the Shield are doing?

After hearing others I'm sure the springs will be OK after some time. This is my fifth auto and the only one that comes close to the difficulty of loading the mag was my GLOCK 26. When new the GLOCK was tough to load but after about 2 months it settled down nicely. I really hope the Shield gets easier soon. At least with the GLOCK it came with a tool for loading.

Time will tell. After 1 month it's hard loading the last 2 bullets so it is improving.

Does anyone make a replacement mag for the .40 Shield? Maybe that's the answer.

Get the Maglula Magazine Loader you will not regret it, it will last forever and you will be able to load single stack and double stack magazines from 9mm to 45ACP with no problems what so ever. It may seem a little pricey for a mag loader but its worth it! Its a one time purchase.

For what it's worth....don't really see the need of a loader..after 3 weeks mine load very very easily....just need to break them in..after that...not a problem.......just saying........

dben,

Your hands must be a good bit younger than mine!!! These days, I really appreciate the assistance of my Maglula when loading mags, especially when I am at the range, and especially when mags are new. Good for you!

Yeah...I even noticed Hickok45 using a loader more frequently lately and he can hand load a 15 round double stack faster than anybody in the world.............

Mine started the same but before any improvement the spring started to bend and bind. Others have gone back to S&W and received replacement springs, but I can't see trusting them when there are aftermarket options.

Still waiting delivery, but from what I'm reading, both the Wolff and maggut replacement springs completely eliminate the loading problem as well as restore reliability…

I honestly believe the springs in mine are messed up. I didn't realize this gun is 3 months old now and still hard to load.

Guess I'll try the Wolff springs, I feel the same about trusting S&W, I don't. This is the third time I've been burned on one of their new guns.

I have a pretty strong grip, I just purchased on yesterday and boy are they stiff. I loaded both of them but split a thumbnail in the process.

I may get one of them pansy loader things!

Now on my 3rd load-let set overnight-unload cycle, getting easier each time.

Installed the maggut yesterday; we'll see how that goes. I'll order a wolff also for comparison. Big difference in price so it will be interesting to compare performance…
BTW, the maggut install was a pain! Might have something to do with the new baseplate.

I'm well over 500 rounds with my new 45 ACP Shield as of yesterday. It's never failed. Numerous factory brands, and reloads. My wife even put a hole through the bullseye with her first shot with it, yesterday. She has a Glock 43 and Smith & Wesson Model 60 357/38 Special.

I even went to the trouble of loading the mags, without a loader. Stiffer than initial loads, such as a 15 capacity XDM 45, but doable. They do loosen up. I've also owned a 9mm Shield for around a year and a half. I trust it very much. It, and the Glock just keep going.

Woman here! I did have a lot of trouble at first loading my 9mm in the mags about 300 rounds later it is much easier. I brought a loader thingy for Amazon and that helped while things were getting looser! It's pretty easy now.

Default Magazine Issue

Thanks everyone for your insights on the magazine issues with the 45 Shield. I took my new 45 Shield to the range today for the first time. Functioned smoothly and there were no issues - except for my inability to load more then 3 rounds into my new magazines. After reading all posts, and watching Hickock45 on Maglula Magazine Loader Simply Amazing! - YouTube, I've decided to order this loader and hopefully this will assist with breaking in the magazines, since I don't have the strength to continuously load 3, then 4, then 5. Easy way out I guess. But absolutely love the gun and the way it handles.

When I brought mine home after purchase I broke down the magazines and polished and lightly lubed the inside of the magazines. Much smoother. Fully load the mags and leave them. The springs will loosen a bit.

Default Try this

I chatted with a S&W cust serv. rep. They are sending me new springs(for the second time) and followers to see if this helps. He also told me to take a wooden ruler that fits into the mag. and work it up and down many times. I did this probably 200 times on each mag. and I am now able to load each mag. fully by hand. It is still hard on the 7rd but I am going to continue with the ruler to see if it gets any easier while waiting for the new springs. I was only able to load 3 rounds in the 6 rd mag and 4 in the 7 rd mag before even with the new springs. Put a folded paper towel in the palm of your hand and wrap the ruler in another one it helps. hope it works for you.

I just bought my 45 Shield today. I loaded both mags to capacity with the UpLula, the most important gun accessory I own.

I turn 70 next Friday, and have arthritis in both thumbs. I couldn't get by without my UpLula.
