Default Stopped firing last round

Tried searching around the internet for this and can't seem to find a definite solution, so please forgive me if this is stupid (probably is) and easily answered.

I have an M&P Shield 9mm I picked up two weeks ago and had my first problem today at the range. I was putting rounds 150-200 through it and at about 185, the trigger wouldn't budge. I had 8+1 as usual but when the magazine was empty and the last round was sitting in the chamber, it just wouldn't fire. Took the round out, put it back in, didn't work, tried that all again, didn't work.

I went back to the front desk to see if someone working there had an idea of what was going on. The guy who helped me thought I was holding it so I was pushing on that lever you rotate 90 degrees to get the slide off (sorry, forgot the technical name of that piece) or something. We went back out so he could shoot t and see if the issue was me holding it wrong. Everything worked fine for him, somehow. 5 rounds and the slide locks back like it should. I'm thinking what the hell did he do differently? There's no way I suddenly forgot how to properly hold my pistol! He leaves, both of us assuming everything is alright, so I put my last 5 in the magazine to finish up.

Bang, bang, bang, bang, STOP! What? I can rack it and the last bullet will pop out of the chamber and I can try loading t again, but it just wouldn't fire if there weren't rounds behind it in the magazine. I have no idea how it all worked for him, worked for me almost 200 times, and now the last round won't go off. When it's empty with no magazine in it and I dry fire, it clicks like it always did and nothing is out of the ordinary.

I'm taking my concealed carry course Saturday and want everything in working order so I can use my own gun instead of having to rent one of theirs. Even if that weren't an issue, I just want my gun to go bang every time I pull the trigger!

For the record: I've cleaned/lubed after both my previous trips to the gun range, so it's nearly impossible for it to be a dirt/grime/gunk issue. I may very well have left out necessary information, so please feel free to ask for clarification.

It's great to join the community and I thank you in advance!

Welcome from the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey.

Sadly, I am not familiar with the Shield, so I can't be of any assistance.

Does it have the magazine safety? If so, is it somehow going into the no magazine mode

May or not be related but I had an issue with one of my shield mags. If u applied pressure to the base of the mag, it would contact the trigger bar and cause a dead trigger. It only seemed to do this on one mag and on the last round. At first. Then it got worse and it would happen to the second to last round. SW replaced the mag and the new one works fine. so far. I think after repeated loading of the mag the top may have expanded slightly which caused it to contacted the trigger bar and prevent it from allowing it to release the sear Good luck

First time I've heard of this problem. I've not experienced this with my Shield. My guess... since the only difference between last round, and not last round, is the magazine... I would suspect the magazine.

Well, since it worked for the LGS clerk, my guess is something you're doing, and most likely something you're doing that activates the magazine disconnect . . .

Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Maybe you could get someone to observe you as you shoot the gun. Just a suggestion!

If the pistol is resting on your weak hand due to your grip style.... and pressure is applied to the mag... it might just not go bang.

Operate the pistol with just one hand grip and see if you get any problems?

Multiquote seems to be not working as I've done it on other boards! Anyway, to make it real simple without addressing each quote: yes, it happened with both 8 round mags. I sure hope it's an operator error and I can pretty much guarantee it is and must be how I was holding it. But really, how did I suddenly stop gripping it correctly? It's strange to think that happened but it must be true. I was gonna ask my brother-in-law what he thinks when I see him next if the issue isn't resolved this weekend -- he can watch me shoot if the problem persists but I'd imagine somebody at this CC class Saturday would be able to recognize the problem during the shooting portion.

I'm glad most conclusions come back to something I'm dong incorrectly because that's easier to fix than a defective gun.
