If you plan to use the pistol as a carry gun, I would recommend no safety since you don't want to have to deal with disengaging the safety during a stressful event. Just get a good holster that protects the trigger and you will be all set.
If your primary use will be a range gun, then you may want to consider the safety. I have one on my Ruger SR9c, and I will often engage it before letting others with me shoot it just in case they accidentally get careless when initially picking up the firearm.
Having said that, I just picked up a new Shield 45, and specifically ordered it without the safety.

I often wonder if some handgun/CCW owners have ever hunted. Still trying to figure out how those in the 19th century figured out the hammer had to be cocked to fire a SA revolver.

Or, just leave the safety off while carrying and you still don't have to deal with it.

Yes, that is also an option , although the naysayers would say no safety = less to go wrong.

I'm old school. I believe all new shooters should buy their pistols with a safety and learn how to use it until it's instinctive. Not just for safety but for continuity .
If you grow into this sport, you WILL eventually own revered pistols( like 1911's ) which don't give you a choice. You get a safety. So you can either learn instinctive safety manipulation down stream as an old dog, or up front as a pup. Your call but it's a whole lot easier up front.

I can sweep off my thumb safety easily , lots of practice . If I can not do this in a stressful situation I seriously doubt I will be able to pull the trigger either . In martial arts they train you to try and keep a cool head . If you fall apart in a stressful situation maybe you should not carry at all . The same argument over and over again the safety will slow you down or confuse you at the moment need it . Is there a study that verifies this or speculation ? If a safety helps reduce my risk of a ND then big plus for me .

Sure hope nobody keeps AR's, and shotguns for home defense. Those dreaded safeties make them useless.(Sarcasm Alert)
