Pulling the trigger on a new Shield 9. Quick Question..
Good morning all. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new Shield 9mm, but I'm torn between getting the standard model with standard 3 dot sights & 2 mags, or ponying up the extra $100 for the model with 3 mags and factory Tritium night sights. Both with be without the thumb safety, and both are available at my LGS.
Any thoughts?
To those who might have the factory NS, how do they stack up? I know a lot of guys have outfitted their Shields with the TruGlo TFO sights and rave about them. This would cost about the same to get the factory tritiums when all is said and done. If I were to get the standard model, eventually (sooner than later) I too would make this switch.
I can't wait to bring a Shield into my EDC rotation. I've been pocket carrying the LCP I bought back in May. My better half seems to have taken a liking to my PM9 since then, and I don't see myself getting it back. Instead of replacing with a second, I'm switching flavors and giving the Shield a taste.
Thanks!

I actually went for the factory installed crimson trace laser on my 9mm Shield and I really love it!

I have two pistols with tritium night sights, one since 1996 (fading).
I wouldn't give you 12 cents for another set of them. YMMV
If you want tritium, suggest you get the tfo because 99% of your shooting will be in light.

I have one with the nite sights (bought used) and one without. If you're going to be shooting at an indoor range with limited lighting...I can see the advantages. Otherwise I wouldn't be inclined to get them.

Always night sights. That's the one I got. But only two mags came with it.

I always go with night sights if it's an option.
If you plan on buying them anyway along with more mags then price it out. How much will another mag cost you along with the sights and installation. You may think you're saving $100 but of you're going to do buy that stuff you may actually be spending more

If this is going to be a serious carry gun I would be inclined to go with the night sights. If not I would not bother. In the real world it is very likely that, if you are involved in a shooting, it will be in very low light conditions and they could come in handy.

The value of any sights is personal, but if your going to carry a spare mag, then the third mag could function as a range mag and allow the other two to stay loaded for SD.

I bought my shield 9mm with nightn sights. They show up great at night, which is when most bad things happen. At the range or outdoor in daylight I have no problem seeing them even with my old eyes.

a set of NS and one mag for $100 isn't a bad deal.

I would go with no night sights and then get the Ameriglo version with the red circle of dayglo type paint (almost like a F/O) but still has a night sight.
And either paint out the rear dots or get the no rear dots set of sights from ameriglo, yes I know it has a name , but I thinks its stupid to give any credence to anyone like they actually came up with that certain idea, just a peeve of mine.
Sights are about 69-76 on line.. The red front is way good for us older guys for about 99% of your shooting.02.

We have one shield without night sights. I'm a lot older than the one whom will be carrying the shield without night sights. So I enjoyed the shield so much I went out and bought me a 9mm shield with factory tritium night sights. Only had it about 2 weeks but love shooting this gun. I'm 51 and my eyes are getting older and I figure having night sights would be to my advantage if I ever need them. I paid $480 so to me it was worth the extra money. I say yes to night sights!

Thanks everyone for the input. I agree with the notion that most bad things happen in low light, and that night sights are a must have on an EDC gun. I guess my question was more if the factory night sights were good (to those of you who have them), or if I'd be better off buying the model without then adding a different brand (i.e Truglo, Ameriglo, etc.)
In any event, I picked up the factory night sight model today. $479 out the door w/ tax. Loving it! Also found a Bianchi holster for it in the used el cheapo bin that came home with it, which will get me by until the crossbreed mini comes in.
Anxious to get to the range tomorrow!

One thing about the night sights. If it is a carry pistol which the Shield is, in a protective situation you will never use the night sights. Why, two reason's. First reason the offender will probably be to close to even try to sight the pistol in with sights. Two even night sights are hard to align in the dark and if you did have time to align them you should have been trying to put distance between you and the offender in the first place more than likely.
I have had night sights on a few of my pistols in the past. Take them in a dark room and try to align them up. Takes a few minuets to get which dot is the front dot and between the back two dots.
I have regular or fiber optic sights on all my Pistols. On my home defense Pistols I have Streamlight Light and Laser combo for home defense. The only carry pistol I have with anything other than regular sights is a BG380 with the removable green Crimson Trace Laser.
Just something else to think about.
Good Luck and let us know what you decide and why.

Well gents,
I can honestly say I love this pistol. 100 rounds of Federal AE 115gr through it without a hiccup. Shot out to 7 yards and got consistent, accurate groups (with a couple flyers. Completely my fault, not the gun.) Snapped a pic of my first 7 rounds.
Very, very pleased with my purchase. Now I don't feel so bad about giving up my PM9.
