Carrying spare Shield mags...
I'm planning on replacing my G36 with my Shield .45 when it comes back from S&W but I need to find a way to carry mags. I'm thinking in some cases I'll have two in some kind of case on my belt and sometimes just one in my pocket. I guess I'll have to decide between leather or Kydex. Has anybody font good gear? Thanks, Bob

Bianchi makes good mag pouches that are fabric covered, and have either a snap or velcro closure. I like them a lot. There are other fabric mag pouches, too...but they don't seem as sturdy as those made by Bianchi. At least the ones I've owned didn't. I can't say I've owned them all!

5.11 makes several made from a canvas strap material that are pretty good, either for attaching to your belt or hooking on Molle gear. Remora makes one that works well in your pocket or tucked in your waist band.

I got this universal nylon mag pouch and carry it oriented horizontally. The Velcro flap allows carrying all my mags, from short single stack to standard double stack.

I saw one whose belt loop I liked a little better at Wallyworld, for a buck less than this Academy pouch.

I just went to Wally World, bought a $10 multi-tool with a case. Threw the tool in a drawer and use the case for my Shield 9 mag.

I dont carry mag pouches with retention. Just my M.O.
Kydex or a snug leather pouch will hold them. If you are worried about an attacker grabbing them, you have failed at that point and need to worry about getting some distance between you and them.
This is just my opinion

I've had great service from Comp-Tac. I've only used their single mag carriers, but they also make a double mag carrier, I believe. They are a bit thicker than some, but they are well made and the kydex used is a bit thicker than many others. They are adjustable for tension and provide a very good grip on the mag for removal. They are also easy to put on and take off your belt, and the belt clip will allow easy and complete installation on a double thickness leather belt. The clip part is very sturdy and strong.

I second gunny4053's suggestion of the Remora. It gives you the option of IWB or in a pocket. I don't care to use them for pistols (too much added bulk for me), but they work great with single stack mags.
I had Remora make two custom pouches for me because I wanted a double pouch that was narrower and didn't have the seam in the middle to fit in my back pocket. One for my Smith single stack .45 and one for a now sold Boberg XR-9L.
I also adapted the idea of the Remora for my BG380 using cardstock and duct tape for thin and easy front pocket carry of two extra mags.

Not sure about the .45 but my 9mm mag fits neatly into the watch pocket of my jeans like it was made for it.

I was going to try Kytex several weeks ago because of all the good reviews. Sent them an email to see if they had any mag pouches for the Shield 45 yet.
I never received a reply or anything so I ordered 2 kydex OWB pouches from Ted_Cori on ebay. I received them quick and they are just what I wanted.
I have ordered 5 holsters and 4 mag pouches from Ted. He does excellent work and will custom build to suit your specs.

I have Bianchi leather and Blackhawk kydex, they both do what they're suppose to do. None of mine have retention straps either-open top with a snug fit, just like my holsters.

My Bianchi leather, open top, double mag case originally bought to carry 2 1911 .45 ACP mags works just fine. I like to carry OWB for my Shield and my extra mags. I cover up with either an untucked tee shirt, vest or jacket depending on the weather.

Flaps on a magazine pouch are just one more thing to get in the way at the worst possible moment

From what I can tell, the tension is dependent on the bend at the bottom of the carrier and the outside portion of the carrier just "floats" without being secured to the rear portion on either side.
If the kydex is thick enough and good quality, it will probably be just fine. I'm also curious about how this attaches to your belt and whether or not this carrier will fit well on a double thickness leather gun belt. Some clips and loops are not quite deep enough to fit completely over this kind of belt. Thanks for giving us a report when your carrier arrives!

True but at the same time all military chest rigs, MOLLE/ALICE gear.....all use some sort of flaps and they go into the worst possible moments

The suggestions for using a multi-tool pouch are pretty good, that hadn't occured to me. I know I have a couple lying around here somehwere. Last I checked, they could be found cheap with free shipping on ebay. (come to think of it, I have a Gerber nylon knife pouch that would probably hold a Shield mag very nicely).
I think the concern about flaps is just more mall-ninja paranoia. Once again, the odds of losing a magazine while casually lugging it around for year after year, are vastly more likely than some far-fetched scenario where you're stuck out in the open, having just expended your pistol's entire magazine, and desperately need a fresh magazine inserted in under .5 seconds.
First, half of everyone is fixated on a pistol's safety supposedly preventing an instantaneous response, and now we're worried a possible fraction of a second delay in loading a second magazine? Where are all these multi-magazine firefights happening exactly?

I have a horizontal magazine holder inbound from magholder.com. MagHolder for Smith & Wesson Shield You may try contacting the business owner and ask when he will be offering one for the .45 Shield magazine.

The weak Link in any semi-automatic handgun is the magazine. I don't carry spare magazines (At home or at work) because I think I'm going to be in a multi magazine gun fight. The easiest way to fix most malfunctions with a semi-automatic handgun is to change the magazine and if I ever have to do that in the scariest moment of my life I don't want anything getting in the way.

Looking at some other pictures of this mag carrier it would "seem" to have a fixed belt slot on the back (not a hinge clip) meaning you would feed your belt through it and not clip it on..but I am going on what the pictures look like they are showing....................

I've been very happy with the nylon IWB holders from Elite Survival Systems. I use the doublestack single mag holder for my FS 9mm 17rd mag and really like it.
Now I'm going to try the dual singlestack holder versus two single holders for the Shield to see which configuration works best to hold two 7rd 45 mags. You can order all of the different versions from OpticsPlanet or Amazon.
The single mag holder holds the mag very securely without having any flaps and the metal belt clip is very strong and tight, so it's definitely not coming off.
The single mag holder can also be canted a bit if needed and will stay in that orientation because of how strong the clip is.
Comfortable and concealable too... Here are a couple links and a pic.

It was just a joke...
I do keep spare mags loaded, and I take a couple with me when I leave the house. When I had a revolver, I always had a couple of speed loaders that were loaded.
I've never had to fire a gun other than for fun, and I hope I can say that for the rest of my life. Most civilian SD encounters don't involve more than a couple of rounds expended, but you are correct: having a spare magazine (or two) in a moment of need is just like having a spare tire in your car. You may not need it, and you hope you don't, but if you do need it nothing else will do!

For my 9c spare mag I use a pocket holster for a small pistol. I ran a staple through to narrow it down effectively closing the area where the trigger guard would normally be. This way I have a nice wide base that keeps the mag upright in my pocket.

I only carry one spare mag and I carry it in a SnagMag. Looks like a knife hanging in my pocket and it keeps the mag up out of the bottom of my pocket and vertical for a proper grip orientation for insertion into the pistol.

I've had good luck with Blue Force Gear Double Mag pouch.
Double Pistol Belt Pouch - The Best Multi-Use Capabilites
It works well, can go OWB on a belt, but I've also dropped in a cargo pocket on shorts/pants and it keeps the magazines properly aligned and pocket litter free. Also reasonable priced and a quality product.
You'd need to make sure they think it will fit a Shield .45 mag.
Good luck in your choices.

I got these mag holders for my 9mm Shield from Talon Training Group in Florida.
The single 9mm is a little tight, the single 1911 is a little loose but okay.

I carry an extra magazine on my belt - in cooler weather - using a G-Code kydex single magazine holder.
I also use a FANTASTIC product called the NeoMag. This magnetic device with clip hooks on to your magazine and allows you to carry the mag in your pocket for a speedy reload. As long as you are not wearing skinny jeans...these work!

I carry my spare mag in a horizontal mag holder on my belt. Completely hidden, easy to grab a new mag, and no poking me in the stomach when I bend over. Check them out, good product at a good price.

I carry my spare in a ballistic nylon case intended for folding knives or multi-tools. Not the open top kind; the kind with the velcro or snap flap. They are inexpensive and lots of people here in Texas carry a folding knife on the belt, so no one gives it a second look. Now, if you plan on carrying multiple spares, having several on your belt might drawn attention, but carrying only one - it looks like a folding knife case, period.

Now, if you plan on carrying multiple spares, having several on your belt might drawn attention, but carrying only one - it looks like a folding knife case, period.

Couldn't find what suited me so I made these carriers. The seven round mag is in a case for pocket carry. Used cordura and it took about an hour. Also made the holster. PJC

Bianchi ballistic nylon fanny pack with secret holster. No longer made by Bianchi, this is the perfect solution for carrying a medium/small pistol, extra magazines, badge, cuffs, flashlight just about anything. My .45 carry pistol holds 7 rounds, the magazines hold 6 rounds. I carry 3 extra loaded magazines, plus equipment listed above. I hope another company makes a similar product.
