Still having problems with my Shield
Still having problems with my Shield 9mm. The slide does not go completely forward when you cycle a round into the chamber. You have to give it a little tap. Noticed slight wear marks on the inside of the frame. Not sure if this is normal or not. Will be sending it back to S&W.

Is this the first round only? If so, are you letting the slide snap sharply all the way forward, or "riding" it forward?

Not riding it. It seems to do ok when fired. Just seems to catch on the first round. I've tried loading fewer rounds. That didn't help.

Sounds like the extractor is dirty, crud has built up in the extractor hook and in the slide where the spring and extractor does its work. Tap out the pin and remove the extractor and spring, degrease, brush, etc. and reinstall everything.
This happens also with Springfield XDS'

You defiantly have to sling shot the slide for proper battery, babying the slide isn't what your Shield wants.

Do not remove the extractor. It's not super tough, but it certainly doesn't need to come out. Just clean it with a tooth brush. If that's the problem, cleaning it with a brush will fix it.

Only about 25 rounds have been fired through this pistol. It just seems like the slide is dragging. I cycled it several times tonight. Each time, the slide would hang up requiring a tap to seat fully forward. I took it apart and lubed it. No help. Going back to S&W. I really wanted to like this pistol. Feels great in the hand. Got me to longing for an all steel revolver. Pinched myself very twice disassembling this thing.

Give it another chance. If it's working properly I'm sure you'll like it. I've had some guns I wanted to use for SD and it would make me nuts trying to find out what was making it just a little unreliable.
Don't worry about the pinch thing. It's very easy to take apart and no reason it should pinch except you are frustrated and fighting with it. The only thing that bothers me is the little lever down in back of the receiver that is supposed to be yellow, but isn't, that you have to flip out.

If it cycles into battery properly when fired, but only needs the nudge when manually stripping a round... AND... it only has 25 rounds through it... Give it a couple more days (and a couple hundred more rounds) at the range to see if it just needs to be broken in.

sometimes "cycling" a pistol by hand is not a true test of anything. A pistol is designed to "cycle" by fireing a live cartrdge-----right? The Shield is not an easy gun to "slingshot"-in my view. ----small gun-difficult to get a good grip on it---short action length-not much room for extra momentum, I have pretty strong hands, but even I am not able to pull the slide back on my Shield 9 and feel the end of the slide stroke before the slide slips out of my grip and starts forward , but when firing a live cartridge-mine is flawless and works just fine. I really do not think that you have a problem---BUT if you are in doubt send it to S&W and let them go thru it. I have complete confidence in mine.

While it's not a S&W, I had an AK that would not cycle ammo by hand at all. I was ready to send it to the MFR for repair, but first decided to test it on the range. It never missed a beat, so I decided that rather than sending it back to correct a problem that wasn't a problem, to do nothing, as it shot PERFECTLY, which is why I bought it. But as others have said, you need to shoot a few hundred down the barrel. Then decide what to do should it jam on the range. GARY

How easily should the slide lock back? Cant get the slide to lock back. Thinking a trip back to S&W is in order. Then, a trade for a trusty revolver.

Try lubing it if you haven't.

Anytime I purchase a new handgun, I clean it thoroughly and apply a generous amount of lubricant before firing a shot. That gives me a chance to inspect the pistol closely and look for anything out of the ordinary. Some handguns run right out of the box and some require a 200 to 300 round break in. After break in, clean it thoroughly again and apply a normal amount of lubricant.
If parts are wearing in on your Shield, it may mean you got lucky and bought one with a tight slide to frame and barrel to slide fit.

Is it when you rack the first round and the round feeds slow and keeps the pistol out of battery ? Does it happen with all magazines ?

From I've seen most m&p's has scuffs marks on the frame rails, I guess that's common. Rack the slide with authority, mine does the same thing if it is not pulled all the way back, so far haven't had any issue at the range. If your gun perform flawlessly when shooting I wouldn't worry about.

Yes. But it happens with or without a magazine. If I understand correctly, the slide should lock back with a magazine inserted. Mine does not. Very difficult to push the slide stop up to lock the slide.

your gun sounds like it is just stiff and needs to be shot some. I didn't feel like my 9mm was broke in till i had 500 rounds thru it. Are you saying that the slide won't lock back on the empty mag when you fire the last round or you can't get it to lock back on a empty mag when you pull back the slide manually? Locking the slide back manually was very difficult when mine was new,as was loading the last two rounds in the mags but both got better with time and use. If it's not your primary weapon store it with the mags loaded and lock the slide back. I'd lube it and shoot, shoot, shoot it......Mike

Saw the "Similar threads" posts at the bottom. Same problem as tspan. Guide rod/coil spring problem. The end coil towards the chamber was slightly bent. Rotated it to the bottom. Everything working fine now. Not sure if I will have problems again or if the spring will rotate at all during firing. Should I be concerned? At least now I know what to look for.

Just called S&W. They are sending out a new guide rod/recoil spring. Will wait to post the rest of my interaction with them until AFTER I receive my part.

I explained the issues I was having to the customer service rep from S&W and that a person on the S&W forum had the same issue and it turned out to be the guide rod. He became very curt with me and admonished me to stay off the forums because "those guys dont know anything. I will send you a new guide rod if you think thats the problem. If you have any more problems send it back to us.". I wanted to say "Well, I messed with the guide rod like the guy said and now it works". But I didnt because I wanted to receive my part. In any event, problem solved. As much as I liked the Shield, Im finding it is not the best choice for my mildly arthritic hands when it comes to racking the slide. A friend has been wanting to get a pistol and a shotgun for home defense. He liked my Shield and now owns it. I will be picking up a 442, no infernal lock, first thing in the morning.

The small grip size doesn't help either.
This is a common problem. People think a small gun will be great for many reasons, but usually find them difficult to operate. Because of the small slide, the recoil spring needs to be stout. This makes the gun much more difficult to operate.

My Shield is the same way, and I have huge hands. I don't get the slide all the way back before the recoil spring overcomes my pull and closes the slide. It was very hard to lock the slide back, and is still certainly stiff, but getting better. I agree with everyone who says nothings wrong. The shield just has some characteristics unto its self. Use is the best cure. We need to shoot these guns instead of just carrying them. It build our confidence it them. If it always works when shooting, whats the worry. When first loaded, make sure its in battery and let it do its thing. It will come to like you, I'm sure. Its a friendly little gun with a lot of heart .

Mine initially had a lot of problems, and probably traveled more miles than most of us in a year. But they got it right, and it now runs like a top.
I think it is just a borderline weapon. Big enough that you can actually shoot it with accuracy at the range while still a size that is easy to conceal. I am glad that I did not dump mine. It may be the only weapon I've kept after multiple trips back to the factory. Usually I get fed up, send it back for a proper fix, and then sell it.
