I was at the range and the guy next to me said he noticed I was using an M&P and only fired 10 rounds before reloading. I have 3 9mm's with different mag capacities. 10,15 and 16. I always load the number of the lowest cap mag in all 3. I have been counting my shots for so long I do it subconsciously. This way I don't have to think about which gun I'm shooting. Since the Zombies haven't invaded my neighborhood and my only real worry is a rabid fox 10 rounds should be enough. Anyone else load that way?

Just at the range? Or do you load defensive pistols to less than capacity. That I definitely wouldn't do

I don't load that way but I do count every round I shoot like you.
When it is my wifes turn,I count her rounds also.

Load to capacity and count to ten for reloads. Zombie #11 may come when you are using a 15 round magazine. Just might happen that way.

I always keep full capacity. I subconsciously count shots fired out of habit, but I want all guns at max.

You say it's a revolver habit, I think it is more critical for semi autos, I change mags with one still in the chamber, so I don't have to sling shot it, or use the slide release.

The closest I come to the OP's line of thinking, is only using 7 round mags for my 1911's. I want them all the same.

I don't count rounds. I've met a lot of guys who say they do, but never met one who actually could under pressure.

I always down load mags by one round. Makes them more reliable.

Well, this is embarrassing, but in the past, I've always tried to load in multiples of 5 (other than 1911s or pistols that have less than 10 round capacity.) For example, with my SD9VE which had 16 round mags, I'd load them with 15 rounds. Why? OCD. See, 15 rounds is three complete rows of 5...if I loaded 16 rounds, I'd have a row of 4 left in the box with one empty spot. Now, if I had 25 mags, I could load them all with 16 rounds, and empty 4 100-round boxes.

Loading multiples of 5 rounds worked well with my SCCY CPX-2, which had 10 round mags. It didn't work with 1911s, or with my SIG P239, or with any pistols that hold less than 10 rounds. I had to overcome my OCD to load those mags to capacity.

I'm trying to figure out how many mags, and in what capacity (6 or 7 rounds) for my Shield .45 I need to have to load them all to capacity and not have any partial rows of ammo left in the box.

Make your own ammo carrier with rows of 7. Make them with 10 rows and carry any multiple of 70 you want.

I load to full capacity. I don't count the rounds when shooting. But I pay attention with what I start with in ammo. I always start with a box of 50 and never put away a partial box.

I am a round counter myself. I guess it's from watching too many Dirty Harry movies. Did I fire 5 or did I fire 6? The question is, "Do you feel lucky, punk"?

As for loading mags, I mostly load to capacity.

Only at the range when loading. 5, 10, 15...etc.. is easier to keep count off how much is left or what I'm trying to accomplish. Otherwise I load to capacity. Otherwise i can just load an auto to 6 rounds and a revolver to 2 or 3.

I don't count rounds, I load to max rounds, and carry 2 reloads. I reload and each ammo box is 50 rounds and I practice a 100 rounds per gun I take to the range. Self defense rounds I buy come in in twenty or 25 rounds, I load all but one round, I keep that one in case I need to to provide it to police if I am involved in a self defense shooting, about every three month I buy new defense ammo and shoot up the old rounds.

At the range ....... depends on the drill I'm practicing......might be as few as two rounds......

double tap with first round double action....................

revolvers will often have me loading a mix of live rounds and empty cases to monitor my sight picture...


Also tends to slow things down and makes, IMO, for better practice sessions.....I even to favor 10 round mags in my 15-22 and ARs....can't tell you the last time I did a mag dump!

I have lost track of the exact number of rounds I have fired at the last several range visits. I need to keep better track. I think I will bring pen & paper and write down each time I empty a mag.

We do 10 at a time at the range no matter what gun. It's easy and it slows us down a little. At the indoor range we shoot for an hour. I used to be amazed that we go through 300-350 rnds in that hour. I pointed that out to my wife a few trips back and now she understands why I always buy ammo by the 1000 rnd case.
