Default M&P .22 Compact Barrel Question

After many months of himming and hawing - I finally bought my M&P Compact .22 today. I didn't get exactly what I wanted - because the FFL who took my BG .380 on trade only offered the suppressor-ready version.

So ... I brought it home and thought all I had to do was remove the thread protector to remove the slide and clean it ... So - now the dumber question - it looks like I could make it into a regular version by removing the thread adapter. And, I did a search here and found out something I didn't know. It looks like (I haven't tried it yet) the thread adapter will be a bear to remove.

I checked Midway, thinking they might sell a thread adapter which converts my version back to the regular version - but no such animal is listed. I have looked at the regular version in a couple of stores and it looks like they have a thread adapter on them too. I wish I had known about the very difficult to remove thread adapter before I traded my BG.

Am I toast - I can't ever break it down and remove the slide? And, there is no adapter to convert mine back to regular style? Thanks!!

Added: after posting this - I decided to try the wrench on the thread adapter. It was more than pickle-jar ... ... tight - but it did come loose. The wrench fits very tight and seems to be reasonably well made.

Call smith and Wesson.

They may sell you a thread protector or simply send you one.

Good point sir, Thank-you. I guess asking this question is why my Mom always used to say something about me not being the sharpest knife in the drawer ... I just called them, reached a friendly gent in Customer Service, and they're sending me one gratis.

I haven't fired it yet - but I did cycle it many times with both proper snap caps and the yellow .22-sized plastic wall anchors from Home Depot. It feeds the cheapie wall anchors perfectly so I don't think I'll have any feeding problems with it.

Now, if I could just find a couple more 6906 mags ... I asked during the call and re-confirmed that the mothership has discontinued them ...

I tried calling Smith & Wesson and the guy I talked to said they don't sell the thread protector but I've seen other people say that's they were able to get it free.

I ended up ordering this and it's as good as the real thing for a few bucks.

As far as I know, there was no other barrel for the compact at first. Just the threaded one.

Tell them you lost yours. Might be free.

Or buy one as above.

Plus it won't convert back to the regular version. The threaded barrel is longer. On the one I have, the barrel protector has to come off to field strip the pistol. There may be a new protector that eliminates the need to remove it. I'd try and find that out.

Maybe you could get a replacement barrel? More bux, though.

Just a late update - the thread protector arrived from S&W this past week. I like the looks much better and it can always be switched back. One thing I noticed though - I thought the barrel would be centered in the slide - but it looks like the new protector barely touches the slide.

I assume this is intentional - maybe the barrel is fixed to the frame (I haven't taken the slide off yet). Seems to me though, and I'm just an old farm boy, that it would have better accuracy if the barrel contacted the slide evenly. Either way, I like it and (Thanks to Hillary) have tons of .22 ammo - just need to pony up $20 to go to the range for an hour ...
