Default Shield 45 questions

Ok I currently carry a glock 23 gen 4 and I'm wanting a shield 45, my main question is what are these pistols worth used? I'm looking to trade my 23 for one with maybe some cash and figure my Glock is worth about $350.
Also how much recoil do they have I carry a ATI 1911 commander in 45 as my ccw now so I know what a all steel firearm has recoil wise. Last question is whats the best defense ammo to run in them?

Federal 230 g HST, and recoil isn't bad at all.

In 45 acp, even ball ammo works great for sd.

It's inexpensive and runs well in virtually all pistols.

High priced ammo in 45 acp benefits the ammo company much more than the end user.

I use a H&G 68 hard cast 200 gr projectile at about 1,000 fps for everything, but I cast and reload my own.

Recoil is modest in every 45 acp round I've shot in the past 40+ years: it's a great round.

Recoil is no big deal in this gun. You'll like it.

Edit: I keep my stoked with Federal HST.

I believe your Glock value is correct. After all, they are everywhere and nobody should pay a premium for a Glock. My Shield 45 is pleasant to shoot and accurate.

If you are trying to get more out of your g23 don't trade at a dealer you can get at least $400 easy on a private sell. The recoil on the shield 45 is very manageable for such a small frame, probably better than the snappy .40 cal.

I'm possibly going to try and either sale it at a pawn shop or find a shield 45 at a pawn shop and trade. Our local gun shop valued my glock at $175 they said its not worth as much because I purchased it under the blue label deal

I have the Gen 4 G 23 & just bought the Shield 45.
I love them both, the 45 almost feels like less recoil than the 23.
But.. I would never sell either.
23 is house gun & S&W when I go outside.
Save your $$, keep the 23 & buy the shield 45 asap!

It makes no sense that your M23 is worth less because it was a blue label purchase. I would find a new shop as it sounds like they are trying to take advantage of you.
I have an M23 and recently purchased the Shield .45 and am very happy with it.
I am using 45 ACP - +P 220 Grain FlexLock JHP - Hornady Critical Duty with a muzzle velocity of 934 fps.
The M23 is no slouch but the Shield 45 is a smaller, lighter package.
Like other have said, keep both!

If I had the money Id keep my 23 but I want to get to where I have just one size ammo to buy. If I had the cash I'd sell my little PT 140 g2 taurus and put the cash with that gun to get the m&p

List your guns here on the forum's "Guns For Sale" section.
Better than giving them away for peanuts.

The recoil is a little more than the 9mm shield but less than the 40 shield to me.

And a blue label gun isn't worth any less than a regular one. That store is just a ripoff.

It never ceases to amaze me how some gun shops think all their clientele are ignorant to new and used gun values. There are way too many ways to research this information. I understand the need to "buy low and sell high", but to insult a customer risks losing a customer!

I really hope you laughed at the person that told you this! Actually, you need to go back and say that you will accept their $175 off if they price a new Shield to you at $250!

BTW, my primary carry is my Shield 45. I would think that it might have a little more "punch" than your commander-sized 1911, but nothing that should concern you. My previous carry was a Glock 30SF. I found that I was a "hair" more accurate with the Shield, but size and comfort carrying convinced me to pick the Shield over the Glock!

Good Luck!

Recoil on the shield isn't bad at all, I use hornady critical defense, and just keep the glock and sell some other stuff you have laying around!

Recoil is subjective. Some will hate it others won't notice it. Also, some guns are better at absorbing recoil then others.

I've seen a few used Shield 45s for sale around $299.

Expect to get around $250 - $350 for your Glock depending on extras. Around here used G23/22 sell for $350, which means the owner got less

Hi neighbor, This is very typical of a pawn shop. They will buy at 50% what they will list it for in their shop. I believe that's the business model of the pawn business.

It doesn't matter what you paid for it or how you got it (well, unless you stole it . . . ) All Glock 23's in the same condition in the same location are worth the same. Around here, a used Glock 17, 19, 22, 23 in good condition goes $400 to $450, depending on how many magazines. Used Shield 45 goes about $50-$75 less, depending again on condition and magazines . . .

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that's how it works around here too. If the gun cost $80 less when purchased new, it's worth $80 less when purchased used. Why should the seller be entitled to make an extra $80 profit? Now whether it makes sense, or not, I don't know. I'm only saying that's how it works around here too. GARY

While I haven't shot them side by side, I would say to me the felt recoil of the Shield 45 and my G27 are comparable. Both of those are loaded with Hornady Critical Defense. I am in no way saying that it the best, but it is what our department issues.

Default +P in the Shield

"I am using 45 ACP - +P 220 Grain FlexLock JHP - Hornady Critical Duty with a muzzle velocity of 934 fps."

Is the Shield in .45acp rated for +P ammo ? If I recall correctly the 9mm is not. Or am I missing something.

Well looks like I'll be waiting a while, cheapest I found near me was $500 o.t.d. so I guess I'll just save my money and keep my Glock and get one in a few months

I generally read posts instead of posting because 99.9% questions are answered, but I have to reply. Picked up a 45 on black friday, I have the shield 9 and 40 and they are great but both are about the same in trigger control etc. The 45 has a great trigger and manageable recoil, I was surprised at how nice it fires, then again reading folks reviews all say the same.
I would trade in my first born for this shield

Next closest one is about 45 or 50 miles. I have a old security partner that has his ffl that I deal with if I order one off line but if I have to trade one theres not much I can do.

Use this forum to sell your gun. Ya never know some member might want it. Beats the heck outta trading it to LGS for peanuts. Snap a pic and list it. Won't cost you a cent.

Thumbs up 45 shield

I have the shield in 9 and 45 paid $405 out the door at Cabela's for the 45. Keep your other hardware and save your money for the Shield 45 it's not a bad thing to have different cals of hardware.

I agree. Shield 45 offers a nice caliber and urban carry package -- the Glock isn't much bigger and doubles the capacity less/same weight less ~50 grains per trigger pull. You'll appreciate the step up in capacity when in a higher threat environment.

Buy the Shield--keep the Glock.

If I go somewhere that there is anyone other than family I carry a primary (either glock 23 or my 1911 both with 2 spare mags) and a backup (glock 23, 1911, .38 special, taurus pt140 g2, or my titan .25 all have at least 1 spare mag except the titan I only have 1 mag for it.)

While you're making up your mind about what to do with your Glock, go ahead and buy the Shield 45. Preppers has them for $379.99 if you act fast.

If you have a G23 blue label I assume you would qualify for Smith &Wessons equivalent LEO/Military purchase program. I picked up my Shield .45 for $340.00
If possible I would try to keep your G23. It's a jack of all trades with its conversion capabilities.

So, I don't get this. Does the gun have an actual blue label on it? I'm pretty ignorant of this program so I don't know. Wondering how the store would even know. I Googled it and it appears that it is on the box. I guess if that's the plastic case then the store would know the origin of the pistol. But regardless, it's the same pistol just sold at a discount to LEOs so its value to others is the same. I don't think what you paid for something has any affect at all on what you sell it for. Sure, someone might use that knowledge to try to bring you down a bit more but I don't think they should just subtract $75-100 from the price right out of the gate. I got a great deal on the last boat I bought from another state and could have easily turned around and sold it for $1-2k more as soon as I got home. No way I would have priced it for less than it was worth in my areas just because I paid less for it.

If you retired from the job, you are still entitled to the blue label program at Glock, but not S&W, to my knowledge.

Not retired lol it just got too political for my taste and I bowed out. Im only 26. When your ex girlfriends dad is over you at one department and her cousin is your cheif at another it gets rather complicated.

if you can keep both that would be my choice. I have both and would dump the Shield way way before the G23, and I really like the Shield 45. My G23 tho IMHO is a far superior weapon , Its capacity, power size conceaibility make it my Favorite EDC in my rotation (Yes, That includes my G19/26)

I believe I'll keep it for now and also get the shield. Later on I may get a 45 acp glock to replace my 23

I bought a .45 shield just before Thanksgiving. I really like the pistol. Recoil is very manageable the trigger isn't bad either. MidwayUSA - Shop Shooting, Hunting, & Outdoor Products has magazines for a pretty good price also. I am shooting the Speer 230 gr. Gold Dot short barrel ammo in it. It is designed to have less muzzle flash in the short barrel guns. I use the same ammo in my Glock 30S.

Mil/LEO active-retired discount. Check out Quantico Tactical for pricing. Great deals.

I have no opinion on the matter. I work for the largest FFL in Florida. 8 stores, & 45 gun shows a year. Average 82 tables a show where we sell 600+ guns on a weekend. That's how we do it, so when I read that other stores do it too, I say I guess other FFL's feel the same way. But I don't think it would be fair for a LE to buy a $480 gun for $400 with his blue label discount, use it for a few years, & sell it for $400 which would be the used price if he paid $480 new. Simple solution. Peel the blue label off the box/case. GARY

I just got a Shield 45 on sale for $370 a week ago and has become my EDC. I am using Sig V crown ammo surprisingly little recoil compared to the 40 S&W shield my buddy has. I'm glad I got the 45 but need to break in the trigger, it is heavy and gritty like all my M&P;s were to start.
