JH1951: I agree completely. My zombie hunting days are definitely over, and I used to do that for a living.
Why does an old guy like me EDC? Simple answer: I'm too old to run and I'm too old to fight.

So, I thought I would give a little follow up here in case anyone was interested. I did experiment with how I wear my Alien Gear holster. I moved it more towards a more 4 o'clock position and also adjusted the holster to the gun rides a little higher. This did take some apparent pressure of the point of my hip but I'm no longer thinking the gun was the problem. I think it was more of stress injury from certain exercises I was doing, potentially wrong. I've been wearing the gun more and I've taken out those exercises and I'm not having any more pain.

OP, that is good news. OWB is now my mode of off duty carry due to a slipped disc at L4/L5 last winter that kept me from wearing anything on my waist for weeks. An Airweight.38 in my front pocket was all I could manage. Went back to work six weeks later in uniform and carry my "company gun" G23 in a Glock brand "Sport/Combat" polymer belt slide holster when off duty. IWB irritates my sciatic nerve with my Galco Summer Comfort holster. May have to consider getting the Back Defender system for the duty belt so I can hopefully make it to Medicare age before hanging it up for good.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and how you resolved it.

I have this same holster, and I know exactly what you're talking about. It doesn't cause me nerve pain, though.
I consider this holster a temporary solution until my Milt Sparks VM2 is made. The VM2 spreads the pressure of a much larger area, so you should have no issue with nerve pain. I've carried a 5" 1911 in one for almost a decade now.
I'm getting the fancy horse/sharkskin version. Can't wait!
The key thing to notice in the pic is most of the barrel bulge is on the outside, and that the holster itself extends way down below the end of the barrel. The backside of these is almost flat, so it's extremely comfortable.
Previously I tried the DeSantis, which does the extended thing, but doesn't have a flat back (it's more symmetrical).

AIWB- Crossbreed Appendix Carry Holster
+1 for AIWB. I know that it's controversial, but I'm OK with it. Just takes a little SAFE practice and training, and I do use the thumb safety. I'm still breaking in a Crossbreed Appendix Carry holster, but I think it's going to work great for daily carry of my M&P 9 PC Shield. They're not cheap, but they are purpose designed and compact. I also carry a 642 in a cheap Uncle Mike's #1 in the appendix position, especially when on the motorcycle- it doesn't poke me as badly when riding.

The key is the type of IWB holster and if it leather, how you soften them with oils and waxes. The break-in approach, just like boots, play a major role in comfort and longevity. My preferences for IWB holsters are with high back that keeps the handle away from my body. It is considerably more comfortable having leather against the body than the weapon.

I carry a SD40ve in a pancake leather holster I make for my right side every day, I leave my button up shirt untucked and the SD doesn't print at all. The shield is even better with one of my pancake holsters to conceal, and no pain in the butt. I'm not a fan of IWb holsters, they just don't fit me well.

I've been using a CYA Supply Company IWB for my 45 Shield and love it. I wear it between 3&4 o'clock and hardly notice its there. I like it so much I just ordered another one for my 9mm Shield, so I can switch between the two for EDC. You can find them on Amazon for really good prices.

+1 on the don't worry about printing so much. Just make sure it's a darker shirt (light colors tend to let the dark of the gun bleed through). Nowadays, everyone has a cell phone and whatnot hanging from their belt.
If anyone asks, tell them it's a medical issue, and you have to poop in a bag, and you'd rather not talk about it...they'll leave it alone fast.

Plus one on the Stealthgear. It is much more comfortable than all of the similar looking others I've tried (Aliengear, White Hat, Crossbreed, etc)

This Crossbreed minituck quick ship will ship out within 48 hours. Mine took a few days total to arrive. Comfort and retention are great on day 1 and my experience with tons of holsters and guns says it likely will continue to be great. It both retains the pistol very well (can even hold it upside down, loaded, out in the open and pistol doesn't fall out, gets better with belt tension) AND allows easy one handed rehosltering (doesn't collapse down in the waistband under the belt, at least not new). Tough combination to get from a hybrid holster design (easy to get from an all kydex design)

Must say that after cc with both Shield 9 and 45 at appendix for years with absolutely no pain or discomfort you must have the wrong kind of holster for your carry position which can happen quite often. 3.0 should be perfectly comfortable unless you are trying to carry on top of a hip bone.

I just purchased the AlienGear Holster Tuck 3.0 IWB. I love it, although I am going to be ordering the metal clips, actually ordered them today, in replacement of the standard clips.
With the standard ones, I find it harder to get them to slide over my belt. The metal ones should be much easier but still hold firm.
Overall though the aliengear is amazing, great quality and their customer service and quick shipping is awesome.

Mine remains in the small of my back. For me that is most comfortable hour after hour.

A good gun belt is the most important component to CCW. If your going IWB you'll need bigger pants. OWB will work with most shirts UN-tucked.
Another thought, is that if you have just started to carry for the first time. It should get easier as your body gets more used to it. You'll find a place on your belt that works.
A gun belt is a must have item, and it'll keep you from buying holsters you don't need. I almost gave up on CCW until I bought a gun belt!

I have been buying Wrangler Western Belt for years and never had any problems with full shirt tucking IWB holsters. No one has ever realized that I am carrying. This weekend I was dress in my Western Wear at a Riverboat Dinner cruise and the couple across from us asked if my external leather sleeve which carries my knife, lighter, firestarter, EpiPen was a gun holster. I smiled and said no. The conversation proceeded to weapons because he just received his CC license so I did stand, pointed to the opposite side of my sleeve where I carry my EDC .357. His wife said she still could not tell that I had a "gun". From jeans, shorts, sportswear, to dress suites you never will tell that I am carrying.

Also, IWB leather holsters are most comfortable.
Kydex shells on leather backing with or without comfort pads are most comfortable.
100% Kydex shells (pancake or taco style) are stiff, rigid and most uncomfortable in any carry position.
Like the rest of us, you have to try many different ones to find the one that works for you....You might want to purchase one of those large storage containers at Wal-Mart to hold all the holsters you don't like and don't use.....

Nice job, I enjoy when someone has a talent but it would not work for deep Iwb shirt tuck carry.

I had a guy dressed as a woman follow me into a public rest room, he/she/it asked me if I thought she was pretty. I said no and politely asked he/she/it to move away from the door so I could leave. He/she/it wouldn't move away from the door so I could leave. My second response wasn't nice and he/she/it put her hand in her man purse. I had my weapon in a INWB holster with my shirt tucked in, I was clearly at a disadvantage if things went to hell in a hurry. Thankfully another person, a man, walked into the restroom before things got ugly. I will never carry my weapon inside my waistband with my shirt tucked in again.

Another Stealth Gear fan here. Both their IWB and OWB are by far my favorites.
Yes they are expensive , but they do run specials occasionally and that's the time to buy.
I don't even look at other holsters any more.

Carry more than one gun. ALWAYS have one in the front pocket.
p.s. Most people with gender issues are not known to be violent.

I have been carrying my Shield IWB, Crossdraw with AlienGear 3.0 tuck. Carrying here during summer is a real pain, putting it under a tucked in shirt. Lately I've bought several vests for both winter and summer. Helps conceal the pistol IWB, and the extra pockets help with other items, ID, wallet, cellphone, etc.. Haband has several light vests at affordable prices. They aren't as easily found as you would think.

I don't know your age, but I am 68 and have determined that IWB carry of anything is just not for me. That pain you feel in your butt cheek and down your leg could quickly turn into sciatica if you are not careful. It happened to me.
I now carry a Glock G30S in a fanny pack, and am considering getting an OWB holster for it because it is so light.
My other carry gun is a S&W model 340 PD, carried in a horsehide pocket holster.

I know the feeling, the only thing a IWB holster does for me is hurt my hip. I had a box full of IWB holsters I never used, gave them away to friends. After awhile, they stopped using them too. Pancake holsters work for me.

Not wearing the right IWB and I bet you did not prep, oil, force shape, soften, condition and wax before daily use.

This is one of those issues that shouldn't be a issue. Seriously I find it funny how much time and effort people put into this subject and to hide there gun. Unless you bend over and it gets exposed it really isn't a big deal people don't go around and go look that guy has a gun just look at that bulging hunk of gun there. Never have I heard or seen that ever. It's all paranoia on your part and if anyone says hey what's that under you shirt look at them and smile be polite as can be and say Nanya.. when they look at you with that look of what finish with Nanya ****ing business but if you really must know it's an insulin pump and walk away....

I carry both my 9mm Shield & my 360 M&P in the small of my back about the 5:00 o'clock position in a DeSantis Cozy Tuck #28 Left hand though I am right handed. Only pain I get is when I rest against a fiberglass seat but I just sit a little side ways as to not put pressure on the spine.

i usually carry my Glock 22/23 or Sig P320 Compact in a GCODE shadow eclipse without printing or any pain. Holster Belt combo is the key for comfort and concealing

OP - maybe you need to try a change in ride height or cant... can you post a picture of your current holster?
It may be if you don't have a sweat guard the slide is cutting into your body... which I'm surprised no-one has mentioned.

Excellent observation... I find quite a few who try to carry iwb with the weapon riding tooooo far above the belt. They believe they have to have a full 4 finger grip before they extract. This leads to outward sway of the handle and more prone to printing and discomfort.

You may not have seen my update but the problem has gone away. I did adjust the ride height of my AG holster and in general it is more comfortable. But, I think this problem was more of an injury in the gym than anything related to carrying my pistol.

I went OWB and never looked back.
Caveat- Since I wear my shirts tucked in, most of my carry is open, unless I have a jacket on or purposely conceal it for whatever reason.

"But they are mentally unstable, which can include violence."
Technically the most unstable and violent gender group is male followed by female. Transgender are most notably the targeted group of unstable and violent males, rarely the instigator.

All according to the shirt style you wear the Shield should be easy to conceal OWB .. I easily carry either my Beretta PX-4 Sub Compact or my S&W Compact OWB both about 3:30 to 4 ..
A t-shirt or a snapped front shirt worn outside your pants will easily cover with out any printing .. I even carry my Sig P229 which is full size with out a printing problem ..
Sciatic nerve pain can be very disabling even bruising of it by sitting on something can give you problems for days later so do find a way where it not painful !! moving it around to 2- 2:30 my do the trick ..

I have sciatica. From years of wallet in my back pocket and bending/squatting at work. I'm an hvac mechanic and have to wear a uniform with shirt tucked in. I've switch to a front pocket wallet/money clip per Dr instructions. I've gone thru 50-60 different holsters to find a Good fit for my carry style (IWB) with shirt tucked. I'm happy to report that I've found an iwb that does not cause pain when carrying. RawDog Tactical IWB. It's a hybrid with leather back and kydex front. Very comfortable and is a single wide belt clip. The other thing is my belt. I found a double layered leather belt that supports not only my holster but helps with back also. Just a thought but you might want to also try these things. Jmo.

I carry Shield IWB with the Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0. No real problems driving or walking. If I am driving a long way I have taken the Shield out and placed it the center console. I leave the holster on without the Shield and it is comfortable.

I carry my new Shield in a Sticky holster right in front of my hip (2:30-2:45) with a cant. It doesn't move, the grip is right against me so it doesn't show, and when I sit, the slide is on the outside of my hip. I carry my SR9c the same way. Very comfortable.

I carry my Shield in an IWB holster at about 3:30. So far no issues. My wallet is in my right rear pocket and the only time it becomes an issue is on long drives of over an hour or so. If leaving on a trip I usually remove the wallet first and place it on the console as I know that within an hour I will begin to feel it in my butt.
I think that as we get older and carry a few more pounds around the middle these issues rear their ugly heads. In the old days, I would always use a shoulder rig tucked under my left armpit but that requires a light jacket unless it is winter time. That's OK for most of the year but tough to wear even a light coat when it's 80 degrees out.

I also recommend the PJHolster IWB with the Shield 9mm.
