Default Apex sear in my M&P Shield 9mm

I replaced the stock sear in my M&P Shield and it dropped the trigger pull 1.4lbs. Now my trigger pull is 5.8 lbs according to my Lyman electronic trigger pull gauge. I'm taking it to the range tomorrow to feel how the new sear operates in my Shield. So far, so good.

I purchased my Shield in December 2015. Do you have the link to determine production dates from the serial number?

The only way to get production date from the serial # is call S&W, but if you have the box, there is a date code on that.

I went with the DCAE kit. I tried the sear alone but still the trigger was gritty, after replacing the striker block and spring it felt great.

Just the sear? What sear? Some of the Apex sears change the timing in relation to the striker block. You might want to use a fresh snap cap and see if you're getting a strike on the primer. Just as a precaution. I would hate to see you get to the range and get a click and no fire.

there is only one apex sear for the shield 9mm and M&P 45 acp (non shield). It is the same that comes with the duty carry kit for the guns mentioned above, there is no FSS kit for the shield ur other sear compatible with the shield.

I used the Apex Tactical 100-063 hard sear which I purchased from MidwayUSA here. This sear is for the S&W M&P 45 ACP and M&P Shield. There is also a video on how to install the sear at MidwayUSA WEBs site. Just click the video tab at the web site or watch it
on Youtube. The video also shows you how to test the sear fit in the pistol. When I tested my reassembled pistol I could also here the striker spring unload and the trigger reset when I released the trigger.

"The Apex Hard Sear was designed to enhance the performance of an already outstanding pistol. The modified geometry will not only improve the over-travel and sear reset characteristics, but will also dramatically reduce the trigger pull weight in most pistols. This sear is made from heat treated A2 tool steel for durability and long service life.
Note: Works with all current production Smith and Wesson M&P 45 series pistols, as well as the M&P Shield. NOT currently for use in the Shield 45. Does not fit in M&P series pistols chambered in 9mm, .357SIG, and .40S&W – please the M&P Fully Machined Sear."

The date code for my Shield 9mm is 02-Feb-2015.

The trigger operated perfectly at the range. My wife shot the Shield better since her shots were close to bullseye and not 5" bellow. I would recommend this Apex sear to anyone who wants a smooth softer trigger with a clean break and quick reset. S&W, are you listening?

The Apex web site indicates the sear 100-063 is not designed for the Shield .45.

I also replaced mine with the Apex hard sear. I had already hand polished all contact surfaces. My trigger was smooth, and heavy. The Apex fixed the "heavy".

glad I found this thread, though it's a bit old. I did not want to deal with punching the rear sight off, though I AM concerned with the striker block bore being gritty (thanks to Bob's videos again!)-- I don't feel a noticeable difference when manually activating the block though.

ill be looking at 100-063 sooner than later, as like someone else posted, i've shot low left on mine... however I did find myself flinching the last time at the range. =(

when dry firing, the muzzle seems to jump regardless of what part of my finger I am using to pull it-- be it at bend, tip or in the middle of the pad.

Thats how I was. Less so after swapping out the sear. I can't shoot that great, but a heavy trigger magnifies the effect.

What is the latest cost for the sear only? Too lazy to go on the web to look since I'm on this site now!

Somewhere in the neighborhood of $45 since I'm just as lazy and half remember from looking at it earlier in the week.

I did the same. Installed the Apex sear in my 9mm Shield, and it made w told of difference in the trigger experience. I paid less than $45 for the sear and consider it a must-do upgrade

The entire apex duty carry is like $90 so just the sear alone is 50% of that cost! Wow! That surprises me.

so is S&W in cahoots with APEX? there is no reason in the world S&W cannot make their trigger parts on par with Apex.
Reminds me of how Ibanez guitars ship with ****** dimarzio pickups .
Everyone swaps out the stock pickups.
I find this extremely annoying. The trigger on my XDM 3.8C destroys the triggers on my shield and my 9C and those have both been reworked.
I seriously doubt S&W hires completely incompetent employees.
I can only come to the conclusion that these shabby triggers are produced like this on purpose.
A good friend of mine just picked up an XDS 3.3 in 9. right out of the box it shot better than my shield does (with over a 1,000 rounds through it and a reworked trigger).

Well...good question. For all I know they may even be a satellite company

I love my FS XDM too. Beautiful trigger action on it.

Course....I paid 2-3 times what I gave for a Shield.

The only gun that I've had with worse trigger than the shield is the XDS, what a horrible thing mushy, spongy, awful trigger, had a 45, and 9mm both 3.3 most people installed the PRP spring kit on it. I even sent mine to XDman to get it fixed.

My only complain with the shield9 was the grittiness and heavy pull, but apex took care of that. My shield 45 is nothing like the 9mm, it is nice clean and crisp, I guess S&W listened.

I have to admit that mammas Shield9 has been good from the get go. Little heavy at 6.5 but clean and crisp. I think we must have got lucky.

The new 9 and the 2 - 45's seem about the same. No real complaint.

Swapped out mammas sear so now I have a S&W sear to work some majic on

I hope so because I have mags/holsters etc invested in my shield and my 9C (which I love).
Hmmmm surprised to hear that about the XDS you shot, i was quite surprised by his, it wasn't as good as my XDM trigger but was not even close to the horrid mass trigger my shield came with.

yup it is all over at XDtalk, the XDM is awesome had a 3.8 9mm and a 4.5 9mm which I still miss a lot. tried to replace it with the M&P pro even tried the core still not as good as the XDM.

Dropped the Apex shear in mammas Shield9.

Remarkable difference. Awesome at the range. 6.5 to 5.

My local gun store has about 25 pistols on pedestals with wires tied to the trigger guards and you can pick up and handle the guns and try the triggers. The two Springfield XDs were the worst of the bunch, there are about 4 Glocks and their triggers are all different and range from bad to O.K. The Smith M&P's are heavier but nice and the Shields are a little bit better, the FN was nicer and the HK was really nice and the Walther PPQ was dang sweet and easily the best of all the striker guns. I think S&W likes their guns to have a little heavier pull for liability purposes which I can understand on the guns without a thumb safety but the pistols with a manual safety should have a nice, light trigger like a Kimber or Springfield 1911.

I'd have to agree, though then they might put the aftermarket guys out of business. My PPQ has a great trigger. But not as great as my M&P 40 with the Apex FSS. I've spent a lot of money on a lot of stuff I needed or didn't need but wanted, or maybe just thought that I needed.. but that Apex kit fell into that category of fully satisfied no regrets.

My 9mm Shield came in last week (my first tupperware pistol -- couldn't resist the price after rebate), and I put in an Apex sear today.

I guess I was lucky. I expected a horrible factory trigger. After a little dry firing and with a small dab of grease on the factory sear the trigger pull averaged 5 lb. 6 oz. If I hadn't already ordered an Apex sear before the pistol arrived I might have just done some minor work on the original.

The Apex (sear only, factory springs) reduced trigger pull to an average of 3 lb. 14 oz., so right at 1.5 lb. reduction.

The trigger bar loop gap from the factory was .024", which left the trigger break and reset out a bit farther than necessary even with the Apex sear. I took the gap down to .016", which still left about .110" of overtravel measured rear of the trigger at the top (held punches behind the trigger). I wouldn't want it in much closer, and the existing amount of overtravel is tolerable.

While I had it apart I fixed the horribly stiff manual safety. I didn't do any major reshaping, just broke sharp edges and a light polish on the safety and plunger. I cleaned all the gunk out of the plunger channel. Much better now. I still may have to build up the lever a little with Acraglas.

The striker block and tunnel could use cleaning up, but after reading about how stubborn rear sights on Shields are I think I'll just let it be. The roughness isn't noticeable during shooting and doesn't seem to harm the actual trigger break. Maybe it will smooth out in time.

I fired 100 rounds of lead reloads yesterday without a hitch except for sore thumbs and fingers from loading the magazines. Those springs sure are stout. I'm looking forward to shooting next weekend with the improved trigger.

Strong first post! Curious for more info on the trigger bar loop to reduce overtravel. By gap, are you talking about the loop to the sear when trigger is not depressed? Did you reshape the trigger bar loop?

Im curious about this too.

I'm talking about the gap measured with a feeler gauge at the end of the loop on the trigger bar that engages the nub on the sear. I used smooth jaw pliers to close it slightly.

Closing the loop moves the trigger break rearward. So, in effect, with a stock trigger you have less overtravel but more takeup. If the loop is closed too far, the trigger will stop before the sear releases. If open too far, the sear can release before the trigger bar is rearward enough to fully deactivate the striker block.

There is a Youtube video by Apex showing how to adjust the loop. They recommend small increments.

Thank you. I'm intrigued by how much can be changed on this platform. I really need to get a trigger pull measurement and learn into all the measurements for pre and post data.

I used an M&P Pro factory sear in my Shield and the trigger is very nice. The Pro sear is the same as a Performance Center sear. S&W adds a heavier sear spring under it to bring weight up a little. A lot of people set up their Pros for competition and install Apex sears, so there are a lot of new take out sears to be found. I tried an Apex 063 and it was very nice but too light for carry from just under 4lbs to just over.

Just installed the sear on my standard Shield 9 and have a PC to compare.

PC9 at 200 rounds at 5# 15.1oz
Shield 9 before (485 rounds, decent dry fire): 6# 10.4oz.
Shield 9 after Apex Sear 100-063: 5# 3.2oz. (dropped 1# 7.2oz)

While I was in there, I messed with the trigger bar: 0.021" stock, widened it to 0.028" then closed it to 0.016" but over-travel was still at 2-3mm (used a punch behind the notch on the trigger), similar to the PC's overtravel.

I'm going to double check my values later on but the PC has the longest take up and the least sear movement. 5mm reset in the Apex'd Shield vs 4.75mm in the PC.

The heavier spring is the one under the cap that is under the sear right? I may have to look for a stock non performance center spring to try in my PC9.

I went the opposite way I opened the shepherd hook up a touch to reduce the trigger take-up, also polished the top of the hook that engages with the sear. I was more concerned with a smooth crisp trigger pull than the reset. Just an individual preference.

Nice. Happen to take before/after measurements with a feeler gauge? If you reduced take-up, how did it affect the reset point?

Something like this-- I'm just curious how it'd affect things. I marked it up with the standard sear but didn't use fine point so it was moot.

The marks from left to right indicate the points:
(BLUE) starting point, trigger safety, sear mvmt begins, break, to overtravel.
(RED) is the reset point.

EDIT: The top is a standard Shield with the Apex Sear (100-063) with the trigger bar loop closed a little IIRC. The bottom is a performance center Shield, unmodified.

The only reason that I have never used Apex parts is because I am not crazy about increasing the pretravel. I like it where it is but it would be nice to have an improved trigger.

In my case actually, I didn't notice an increase in pretravel.

Pre-travel didn't really change much. What did change in my findings were that the amount of "sear movement" was reduced, and most noticeably, the pull weight decreased.

Compared to the first picture I posted, the top one in the picture below is the stock Shield, Apex'd Shield, and then Performance Center Shield. I didn't post it initially because it's a bit ambiguous in comparison because I initially used a medium point pen.

What are the 2 lines after the break on the Apex'd Shield? There seems to be an extra line.

Left to Right lines:
NOTE: there is a "RED" (hard to tell on blue tape) line which is where the reset is.

idle, trigger safety disengaged, sear movement begins, break point, max/overtravel.

Basically, there is more sear movement on the Apex'd Shield vs PC Shield. Though the Apex Sear'd Shield (+ polishing) is lighter than the stock PC Shield (5# 3.2oz vs 5# 15.1oz), it does have a longer area from where the sear starts to be engaged by the trigger bar loop until it actually breaks.

Similar to the stock standard Shield, in terms of sear movement, however there is no plateau in the trigger pull when it was stock.

I'm very interested in doing the same to my Shield 9.

Is your Shield a 9, 40, or 45? Also, when you say the sear from the M&P Pro/Performance Center works on the Shield, which Pro/Peformance Center sear (9, 40, or 45) works on the Shield 9?

From what I've gathered so far on the forum, the .45 Pro/Performance Center sear only fits on the Shield 9 (the M&P Pro/Performance Center 9 and 40 don't fit the Shield 9).

Did you ever measured the trigger pull with the factory sear compared to after when you replaced it with a Pro/Performance center sear, can you share how much the trigger pulled dropped?

I'm mostly interested in doing this because i want to try and keep the trigger pull at 5lbs or just above 5 lbs. I don't want it to drop below 5 lbs as Apex advertises their sear probably can.

Would really appreciate any helpful feedback, thanks!

Apex indicated the trigger bar loop might need adjustment with the Forward Ser Sear used in the competition pistols. The duty sear shouldn't need the trigger bar loop adjusted. Of course you can adjust as you see fit.
My Apex DAEK is the only one sold for the Shield. My kit didn't reduce take up that I noticed, just smoothed everything out and made the break crisp.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there about the Apex kits. The duty kits aren't hair triggers or competition triggers. I don't think they change the timing. My Shield has an excellent trigger, the best in ANY duty pistol I've shot.
The people who have put in the Apex duty kits consistently express that its the best stirker trigger they've shot and they try to share with others.
People who haven't shot an Apex trigger say its too light, its a trick trigger with no pre travel, etc, etc, etc.
People who don't know and haven't shot it seem to have a long list of negatiives, but its all bunk. Don't put any stock in these expert opinions. A properly installed (which is easy) Apex duty kit will be the best trigger you've ever shot in a duty gun. If its not, Apex will work with you and make it right.
The money I spent on Apex was worth every penny.

Here's the S&W "R" Competition sear, comes on the M&P 2.0 Full-Sized from the factory. I heard these are used on the 1.0 Shields as well.

Left to Right:
OE Shield Plus Sear, Shield 2.0/Plus Performance Center Sear, Apex 100-074 sear (for 2.0/Plus)

The OE Shield Plus is 4 lb, PC is 3.75 lb, and Apex is 3.25 lb

Unfortunately with the PC and Apex sears, the sear barely drops just enough to let the striker release. It does reduce the pull but that is a bit disconcerting to me as the OE sears from the factory all drop the sear entirely.

I believe the candy cane loop on the trigger bar could be adjusted, but eventually that weakens the trigger bar material. The only adjusting I did on the trigger bar was move the candy cane loop further away from the striker plunger block so it is more parallel with the sear engagement.

The M&P 2.0 uses the same sears as the Shield, but their sear engagement is a different mechanism/linkage entirely. That teardrop doesn't really touch the trigger bar.

Something else I learned from shooting Glocks for over 18 years is that a lighter trigger pull by itself doesn't help me shoot better. I've tried every mod possible and ended up going back to stock parts with a few exceptions. Glock OE Minus connector and the NYPD Orange trigger spring. The pull is like 9-10 lb (off the scale for my wheeler gauge). Sounds terrible but I shoot it mainly at 25 yd, standing, unsupported and have no issues with accuracy. It really helps me train to improve trigger pull and grip.

The M&P 2.0 Full is a 4 lb pull, same as the Shield Plus, but for some reason the M&P 2.0 Full is a cleaner and crisper break. The Shield Plus doesn't feel as good. Some theories I have is the smaller and lighter stature of the Shield Plus contributes to this.
