Default M&P22 sometimes has problem chambering first round

When inserting a fresh mag with the slide locked open, When I try and either close the slide by hand or with using the slide stop it sometimes pops the first round out of the mag so it ends up sitting straight up and down in the now closed (partially) slide. I guess like a stovepipe only with the first unfired round.

Additional info: it's the full size version made by walther. running mini mags. I live in canada with 10 round limit so our mags are usually pinned (not sure mag cap in the states), and the problem happens with racking the slide or using slide stop to close slide.

Aside from sometimes not wanting to chamber the first round from a fresh mag it runs pretty flawlessly.

What is the reason for this? I did a google search and couldn't really find anyone else with the problem.

You may compare all your mags to see if it does the same on all. It could be that the "ears" of the offending mag are not the same width, or just plain crooked. Some guns are more picky about straight "ears". The Hi-Standard 22 pistol is one of them. The least little misalignment causes problems. One clue is that if it's only on MANUAL slide closing. If it's ok on subsequent auto action, then the SPEED of the slide comes into play. The normal, faster slide action can be chambering the round before it has time to get crooked.....sounds like a mag issue to me. I've "tuned" several.

Shanen, I also just purchased a MP 22 and had the same problem with any Mag that I inserted with the slide open. I think that because of the light weight of the .22 ammo, when the Mag is seated with any kind of force, the first bullet might pop up a little causing the stovepipe. I personally got into the habit of always closing the slide before inserting a Mag. Never had a problem with a stovepipe since.
