Took the Girl friend and her new 9 Shield to the range. Long story short, we got her 9 and my 40 Shield mixed up. Sent three 9s down range through my 40 Oops!!! Question, do you think I may have damaged my 40 Shield in any way????? Thanks, in advance...

Probably not, but I am surprised that the whole round didn't fall out the end of the barrel (just kidding).

While i dont have any scientific data to back it up, I believe its fine. Ive seen several tests done purposely shooting a 9mm through a .40 bbl. In all cases, no damage was done to the firearm.

I made the same mistake years ago with one round of hot 9 mm thru my S&W 4006. It was a ** hum moment. No harm, no foul. .....

In the video with the Glocks that is exactly what happened. He put a 9mm round into the barrel and it fell out the other end. The only thing holding the round in place for the firing pin to hit the primer was the extractor pin. Pretty interesting.

Sure ruins the 9mm cases for re-loading!

This will not cause any damage to the .40, don't worry about it. But, as others said, "Don't make a habit of it!"

You're fine. Try not to mix it up the other way. If you managed somehow to get the round to fit that would be very bad.

I like the "reverse bottleneck" cartridge case, but it's a ***** to reload!

A while back I bought a 40lbs box of mixed range brass from Everglades Ammo. Price was so good I just couldn't pass it up. Turns out I found three 9mm cases that had been fired out of a 40 so apparently it happens more often than we might think.

A few months ago I was shooting with my father-in-law. He was shooting one of his 1911's when one round made a rather strange sound more like a shotgun. Turns out he had mixed some 40's and 45's together and loaded and mag. While it did fire the 40 round it did not cycle the slide and the case was lightly stuck in the chamber. Other than having to remove the stuck case no harm was done and hopefully a lesson was learned.

One I can imagine, but three?

It is a dangerous error.
If the .40 extractor holds the 9mm, all you get is a funny empty case.
But if the 9mm slides halfway down the barrel and you manage to rack in a .40 without it falling out, it will demolish your gun.
Not theory, a guy here had an expensive competition gun with .40 upper for USPSA and 9mm upper for three gun. He did indeed fire a .40 behind a 9mm laying loose in the barrel and there was not much left of his 9mm upper. Fortunately neither he nor the receiver were hurt, he was just out several hundred bucks for a new slide and barrel.

I did the same thing with a Glock awhile back. We had 2 Glocks on the bench a 40 and a 9. I picked up the 40 dropped the mag & loaded it with 9's. Fired it twice. The rounds fired, but the slide didn't cycle. No damage to the gun, but I felt pretty dumb, I should have looked at he gun more closely

Did something similar years ago....buddy was shooting my pistols.

Heard a really strange round.....stopped, he shot another......I walked over to get him to stop... he looks "wassup?" Lemme see that pistol. Dropped the mag...yup...9mm......I just chuckled. told him to NOT grab out of that can.....HOLY ****! he shot about 400 rounds of 9mm in about 30 minutes.

Told him he was done for the day with that.

Anyways, a 9mm through a 40 makes a very unique sound, but not a big deal.

Good thing to know since I am getting ready to use a 357 sig and 9mm barrel in my 40 M&P 40! If shooting all at the same time I will segregate barrels with own mag and ammo!

I really doubt any damage been done. I'm surprised that action cycled. Did similar stupid - 357 Sig out of 40 - kept the case as a reminder

Default Bore Damage??

An under-sized projectile wobbling down a bore won't enhance accuracy. What would save the gun and shooter would be a greatly diminished pressure curve due to little bullet-bore friction which lowers peak temperature and gas cutting, which is going on big time, fore and aft. Glad everyone survived with fingers and eyeballs who inadvertently tried this experiment.

Red face

Many years ago, I mistakenly fired a 38 Super round(hand loaded to ultra major) in a 45 ACP Model 1911. The round was top one of a magazine full. The round cleared the barrel OK and split the case and blew it out to 45 ACP diameter. I keep the ruined case on my loading bench as a reminder to try not to do stupid things....it works most of the time.

When I go to the range with more than one caliber, I'm much more careful to avoid mixing ammo.

Here is a simple way we do it.
I set up 2 or 3 tables, and use each for either the smaller stuff, and the second for larger caliber. Third table is for rifles and shotguns only.
If a 357 revolver is used, then both the 357 AND 38 cal is fine, as the 357 will accept the 38. Keeps us from having any ohhh s### moments.

Thank you,

at my shooting range there is a totally destroyed 25-06 in a glass case, it has a plaque on it that says "this is what happens when you shoot a 308win in a 25-06, always check you are shooting the correct ammo in your firearm!" I'm not aware of the condition of the guy that shot that rifle, but from the looks of the gun I'm sure it ruined his day to say the least....

This used to happen frequently at my range when I was an RSO. I'd notice someone having problems with one of the rentals and YEP the person at the counter rented a 40 S&W and sold the user 9MM ammo. The magazine would usually contain the cartridges and the extractor would catch the groove so on occasion one round would go off but the reports sure sounded funny.
To the best of my knowledge no guns were ever permanently damaged in this way.

Saw a range officer shooting .40 S&W out of a .45 1911. It worked, but not well. He slunk away embarrassed when I pointed out the swollen brass to him.
