Here is a basic gun oil test, rusting, plastic degradation, friction, etc.

Not all products available but a good number of common used gun oil's.

The biggest problem is that their pour-point additives often contain benzene compounds, which aren’t a good thing to have next to your skin on a regular basis! I recommend staying away from motor oils." - Grant Cunningham
I am with Cunningham on this one. If motto oil were the best solution then the military would be lubing small arms with it. It would save a lot of money.

....... It's already been pointed out that what the government/military does or doesn't do, is NOT a reliable way to accurately guage the wisdom or economy of something. In fact, a case could be made for the opposite, given their history of bureaucratic ineptitude and wastefullness.
Also, I don't think anyone is saying motor oil is the absolute "best" gun lube in existence, the point is that it's more than capable in that capacity, and does it at a fraction of the cost.

When you begin a disagreement by telling a person that he is “not listening” you do more to create an argument than resolve a difference of opinion.

You recreated my position. I did not say that anyone suggested that motor oil was the best lube. I did not say that the military was the authority on lubes. I did say that the military does not use motor oil because it obviously believes it is not the best product for the job, and that it would save money if it adopted it as a lube. Neither of my remarks condemned motor oil as a lube. They simply offered a different view.

Rest assured that after 30 years in the military I understand your comment about .”ineptitude and wastefulness” since it is a fact. But it is unfair to characterize that fact as endemic a a d iation form the norm of all massive organizations.

If you think about what motor oil is used for, lubrication of moving metal parts in a high temperature , high stress environment and take into consideration the oil has additives for antiwear , oxidation inhibitors and detergents. Seems to my uneducated mind a light weight motor oil would be just fine for guns . At the very least not harmful . Maybe grandpa was on to something

I gotta go with some of the others here. If it were really good, the vendor would recommend it. I like Royal Purple, Slip 2000 and some of the other synthetics. I use Militec on all my ARs and heavy use guns. Love that stuff. On the flip side, I abhor CLPs. Anything that tries to do two thngs at once usually does neither well.

I use the 30 weight oil that goes into my lawn mower engine. Works fine for me!

Gun cleaner and lube discussions are just like ammo discussions...
Mine is bigger/better/longer/prettier than yours!
I sum it up this way;
All handgun ammo of lesser calibers always tries to be as close to/good as/better than 45.
All gun cleaners & lube products always try to be as close to/good as/better than Hoppes9 products.
Use what works for you.

Wheel bearing grease. I’m still on my first tin bought 10 years ago for $4. It will probably last another 10 years.

Use what you want or you can read one of the many 1,000+ threads about gun oils/cleaners.
Just get an all in one like Ballistol or Slip2000 and be done. I've used both for years with no issues.

Motor oil has evolved over time. Back in the day it was less refined and smelled. Today, the motor oil I use on guns is synthetic and has no smell. It's designed to stick to metal and provide metal to metal lubrication. A car has more wear and tear in 5 minutes than a firearm in year[s].

Most of the other firearm oils are vegetable based. No harm to finish or plastic accessories. Some solvent added for cleaning. Clean, lube, protect.

I keep hearing this, but is it true? None of the gun oils I have are vegetable based. Which are vegetable based?

Default I was headed out to the garage.....

I was about to head out to the garage last night. We were planning on going shooting today and my wife puts stuff 'where I can find it' (I can never find it) I was going to get a few drops of motor oil to lube up a somewhat dry gun. I found my Butch's when I was on my way out. Hey, in a pinch it'll work.

Just because pappy crapped outside in an outhouse doesn’t mean I have to. I use oil made for guns not vehicles.

I like Mobil 28 Aviation Grease - excellent in cold weather, and great for the rails, hood (where it mates with the slide), barrel in the front, and locking lug. For me, grease sticks where I put it, while oils can drain off or evaporate more easily. I use BreakFree CLP on the smaller moving parts, trigger group, etc. I see very little wear on my guns and never have functioning problems. Others are probably having equally good experiences with their solutions; the trick might be to try something, observe, correct, repeat. Change if you feel like it, because there are a lot of ways to skin this cat.

I spend more time these days worrying about keeping the bore clean, and have bought some of the more specialized lead and copper removers to keep the barrels of my revolvers (often shooting lead) and semi-autos (shooting jacketed or plated) free from build-up. Good copper or bronze brushes are essential, too. Lead or copper build-up affects accuracy and can cause chamber pressures to build up fast.
Bronze bore brush every time I clean & lube after a range session! Keeps the bore in excellent condition and prevents fouling and lead build-up!
