M&P 22 Compact Question
Hello, I have a question about S&W MP 22 compact.
My wife just bought one and I am wondering if they are
fussy as to types of ammunition. I myself had for my first
handgun bought a new S&W 22 Auto, model 22A. It was
a nice plinker but seemed to prefer CCI mini Mags and had
a definite dislike for Winchester and Aquila. I have since moved
up and passed it on to my son for his first gun.Is the M&P as fussy as my old 22A was? We will be taking it to the range soon and
I have made sure to buy CCI Mini Mags for the first outing.---John

I too bought one for my wife. So far it has functioned perfectly with cci mini mags(36 & 40gr);Browning BPR 40gr; and Remmington Golden Bullet 40gr. We will try more brands eventually.

I just picked up my 22 compact today. I plan on using Mini Mag 40gr for the initial break-in period. I've cleaned the gun, but I do have a question. The magazines have some play when they're in the gun. I don't think this was the case with my 9c. Is this normal? They don't fit in there snugly enough to have no movement.

My Compact is able to eat anything I feed it, great operating and accuracy.

I did just go out and shoot ten rounds. It did fine, but that magazine wobble is annoying. If it's normal for the 22c, I'll get over it, I guess. My 9c definitely had a snug fit.

Do your magazines have some play when they're in the gun?

Mine has only been fed Mini Mags so far. One LGS around here always has them for $8.99 per box of 100 and I pick up a couple packs every time I go by there. Between me and the wife we probably have a few thousand.

Check out Walmart if you like Mini-mags. My Walmart sells them for $7.49/100 IIRC.
Unless of course you want to keep the $$$ local.

Our local Walmart has been really spotty on 22's and the few times they do have them it's been some off brand for way too much money.
Back in October I was out of town and stopped in a Walmart to pick up a couple things. Stopped by the ammo counter and they had tons of ammo and also carried some reloading stuff.
Back to the original topic, my father-in-law has a 22c and he runs all kinds of stuff through it with no problems. He's got a few brands I've never even heard of.

I just checked out my wife's Compact. You're right about
the wobble in the magazines. I guess it's not a big deal
though, I don't see how that would effect the guns accuracy.---John

I have 800+ rounds thru my compact now, a mix of Mini mags (36 & 40 gn) and Federal Champ and Auto-match ammo. Zero issues so far.
Moving forward once my Fed stock is gone it will be on a diet of mostly mini mags, as that's what i try to stick to when buying .22 ammo now (my Buckmark is a bit finicky).
The compact is a fun little gun, fits the purpose I got mine for.
Edit: went and checked mine, an unloaded mag is just a slight bit loose, but nothing I've noticed or paid attn to in my 800+ rounds worth. Cant compare it to my Buckmark as both are a different grip design/feel for how the mags sit inside. But guess if this thread was what got me to check the mag after having the gun for awhile, nothing i'm concerned about anyway

Thank you for checking that, John. I'd rather hear from another gun owner than an S&W rep, who also said it was normal for the rimfire guns. He wasn't overly helpful. Seems strange for them to be so loose, though.
I'd like to hear if others have the same wobble we have.

You're welcome. The reason we bought the Compact for my wife was she had an S&W Airlite 22 7 shot revolver and the trigger pull was too stiff for her. She had learned to shoot years ago on my old trusty 22A S&W auto and loved the action. So after moving up from the 22A to my 686P I gave the 22A to my son and bought the Airlite for my wife. So we have come full circle back to a 22 auto for her. I believe that the magazine in my 22A was also a bit "jiggly".---John

Even the old stuffr!
My compact will eat anything I put in it!!! That even includes some very old Remington that was originally purchased in1960.,
Shoots every bit as well as new. Even better than some of the Remington that I got recently. It still shoots it but you can notice a very distinctive week discharge.

I have the M&P 22 it runs everything I have thrown at it. CCI Blazers, Federal bulk pack, Mini Mags, Federal Auto Match, Thunderbolts, Remington golden bullets, Winchester super X and bulk pack. The only thing I have a issue with is the unplaited bullets tend to lead the barrel. I use it to practice for pistol matches and have run several thousands through mine. I updated the sights to Dawsons but other than that it has been a great gun. Just don't dry fire it as it can cause damage to the chamber that is per the instructions.

I finally got to take my new 22 compact to the range today. I only shot for half an hour, so not that many rounds, but it was FUN!! I shot 70 CCI Mini-Mag 40gr round nose, 20 CCI Mini-Mag Standard Velocity, 40 Winchester Super X, and 20 Remington Golden. All did fine. The trigger feels gritty, but it doesn't affect my shooting, and the ejected brass flies in every direction---kind of wild ejection. Overall, I LOVE this pistol! No regrets!

It sounds like the compact will function fine with standard velocity rounds (like CCI SV). Is there that much less wear on the gun by using SV instead of Mini Mags, or is it enough to even matter?

High velocity rounds are just fine. Since they make up the majority of bulk 22 ammo, most of your plinking type guns are made to run high velocity. I'd avoid hyper velocity rounds like Stingers and Velocitors.

Mini Mags are not needed to make this work, which is nice. Some weapons require them for proper operation. The Ruger MK series is the only one I know of that shoots anything, other than the revolvers. It won't cycle a 22 Short though, a revolver will.

Do you store your 22 mags loaded, unloaded, or partially loaded?

I dont leave my 22 mags loaded at all; unless I preload some the night before a range trip just to save time. Those mags are easy to load quickly so i dont have any real need to leave full in the safe.

Mine is relatively new (around 500 rounds total so far). I had several failures to feed with Federal HV match rounds on my first outing. Cleaned the pistol and used a bit more lube before trying it again yesterday. Shot a bunch of old ammo, dating back to at least the 1970's, mostly Federal's, just to get rid of it, and did have a couple of failure to extracts, but I'm guessing that was likely due to tarnished brass or improper ignition.
I did try some new Aguila in standard velocity, and they would not function at all, failing to eject every single time. I actually was a bit surprised, because I read probably 100 different reviews on the M&P compact 22 before I purchased mine, and many stated theirs would handle standard velocity ammo with no problem.
Also, another "issue" I would like to mention. Magazines are difficult to seat, empty or loaded. They basically have to be slapped to get them to latch into place, something that is normally not an issue on centerfire pistols. Is this normal with this gun, or is mine defective in some way. Thanks.

The 22 Compact is generally not fussy about ammo. the only ammo I had a problem was Winchester Super X. Never tried Aquilla. I have tried other brands with no problems. I never shoot bilk ammo. I shoot CCI Mini Mag HP because it is one of the few 22 rounds that will expand out of a 3.5 inch barrel. Since it is the same price a CCI round nose, I shoot HP and carry. I have put at least 1,000 rounds of CCI MM HP through the 22 Compact with a single failure to feed, fire, or eject. You can trust it.

Funny, I also have some that my step dad gave me that are really old. I have not shot them yet. But, I doubt they are as old as yours.

My wife's first gun also. I think its the perfect introduction into a semi-automatic gun. Fit, function, form, everything. Field strip has a slight twist to it though.
In 30 days she went from "cant chamber a round" to moving up to a Shield9mm.
60 days later she scored a 100% on her CCW test (admittedly this was shooting almost everyday and a buncha rounds)
Couple years later and she has her own AR and she has absconded with my FS XDM45
....and her T-shirt says "Your first mistake was thinking Im like other Grandmas!"
