Performance Center Fluted .45 Shield Thumb Safety?
Hello Newbie Here,
Looked at a Performance Center Shield Fluted.45 (11629) at a local gunshow yesterday and really liked it, but haven't been able to find out if it is offered with a thumb safety. I know it's a personal choice but I've always had a safety on my guns. I know they are available on the 9 and .40's from PC but can't find anything on PC .45? I do see that the standard .45 Shield is available with/without safety. Any info is appreciated as I really do like the feel of the Shield. Thanks

Hello, and welcome. No safety on the 45 at this time...weird because 9mm and 40 are not available without the safety. Here is a link to S&W
Bad Request
And You mean Ported not fluted. I thought there was something new and went looking for a fluted barrel from S&W lol.

Yes ported, my bad. Thanks Steved13. Must be because they are fairly new production? Odd that the 9 and .40 have the safety and not the .45. May give S&W a call/email to see if they can shine some light on this. Thanks for reply!

I recently bought a 45 shield w/o the external safety from Academy Sports. They had one with a an external safety but I don't care for them so it's still there.

Steved13, guess we're not on the same page!
Her'es a 45 with safety:
M&P(R)45 SHIELD™ Thumb Safety | Smith & Wesson
SKU: 180022
And here is a 9mm without safety:
M&P(R)9 SHIELD™ No Thumb Safety | Smith & Wesson
SKU: 10035

I purchased my Shield 45 from the Fort Myers gun show this past weekend and I had the option of a thumb safety or not. I got it with the safety because I felt like I was getting my money worth. Hey, I don't have to use it, right?
I'm interested in where you found a performance center model of the Sheild 45. I didnt know they were producing them yet. Of course, I'm new to the handgun game so I dont know much more than what Ive spent a year researching. Also, Im still not entirely sure of the benefits of porting.

Oh yea, the PC 45 is out there, but they are hard to find...at least right now.
Here's mine.

OP said Performance Center, which is why I posted what I did. He stated he had found standard shields, but not PC.
The links you posted are not Performance Center models. The 45 PC is not available with a thumb safety and the PC 9 and 40 are not available without a thumb safety.
Easy mistake to make if you're not familiar.

Is it just me or does it seem odd that S&W offers a PC Shield in 45 WITHOUT a manual safety, yet they don't with the PC Shield 9mm??

I emailed S&W about it and the reply I got was so stoic I thought maybe a computer replied.
I said I really wanted a thumb safety, pointed out the others had them, I couldn't find any info and wondered if they offered the safety or would in the future.
Their reply was like this:
The Shield .45 Performance Center does not have a thumb safety.
Please email, call, and social media them about it. I'm so sick and tired of the bandwagon gun owners that think anything not 9mm and from Austria is the worse thing in the world and you are stupid and a loser for liking what I don't like and it was someone that told me to like it.

I would buy the .45 PC today if it had a safety. I have a 9mm with tritium sights and no safety and wish I would have waited for the same gun w/safety. The more I learn about safeties and unintentional discharge, the more I want an external safety.

I agree about safety. I have a Shield 9PC and would buy a 45PC IF it had the thumb safety. I have external safeties on all my guns. That's just me. It's a personal thing for everyone. It is ODD that the biggest round doesn't come with the thumb safety. Maybe they had a shiiittteload of frames without they made and had to get rid of them all? Maybe they WILL offer a 45PC WITH thumb safety after reading my post.

Personally, I do not care how much you train, if you miss or slip trying to get that safety off in a high stress situation or self defense situation, you are screwed. Too much can go wrong.

I emailed S&W and they said that they had received quite a few inquiries about a thumb safety on the PC.45 and that engineering was aware. Also, said it may be a option in the future? Guess I'll look at the PC9mm shield. Sure as I buy the 9, Smith will release the PC.45 w/TS Thanks for all the info!
